Harbor Club Is… Home.

At Harbor Club, we believe our community is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a feeling, a lifestyle, and a collection of special moments that bring people together. That’s why we launched “Harbor Club Is…” by asking residents and members to share what Harbor Club means to them.

One of the first families to share was Brian Volz and his wife Taylor. As new parents, Harbor Club holds an especially meaningful place in their lives.

Brian shared:

“Harbor Club is Home. It’s where we brought our little girl home from the hospital, it’s where she will play, where she will grow up. This neighborhood is her home but more importantly, the people of Harbor Club are her extended family. We love it here and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

The first picture is outside our front door before her first family golf outing. The second is our family picture at her first Easter. The third is her and I enjoying some much needed lake time. The fourth is a picture of my wife Taylor and our baby girl on a family walk with the dog through the neighborhood. And the 5th is us enjoying a walk through 9 holes on the best golf course on the lake.”

Stories like this remind us of what makes Harbor Club truly special. Every sunset on the lake, every round of golf, every quiet morning on the porch becomes part of the bigger story of our community.

Now, we’d love to hear from you. What does Harbor Club mean to you? Share your photos, stories, and favorite moments with us for a chance to be featured on our website, social media, and newsletters.

Together, let’s celebrate the heart of Harbor Club.

July Gardening in Georgia: What’s Blooming & What to Plant for Fall

Summer in Georgia brings long, sun-drenched days—and if you’ve spent any time outdoors in Georgia’s Lake Country lately, you’ve likely noticed the bursts of color, fragrance, and life blooming in gardens across the community. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just looking to add curb appeal to your home, July is a pivotal time in the community garden or at home in your own yard. Here’s what’s flourishing now and what you can plant to ensure a gorgeous and productive garden come fall.

What’s Blooming in Georgia Gardens Right Now

July is peak bloom season in the South. Here’s what you’ll see thriving around Lake Oconee:

  1. Crepe Myrtles
A Southern staple, these vibrant trees explode in shades of pink, purple, red, and white this time of year. They’re heat-tolerant, low-maintenance, and add height and drama to any landscape.
  2. Coneflowers (Echinacea)
These pollinator-friendly perennials are not only beautiful but also tough. They thrive in Georgia heat and attract butterflies and bees alike.
  3. Black-Eyed Susans
Bright and cheerful, these yellow-petaled flowers are resilient in hot, dry weather and bloom throughout the summer.
  4. Zinnias & Marigolds
These colorful annuals love the heat and bloom in bold shades all season long, making them ideal for flower beds or container gardens.
  5. Gardenias & Hydrangeas
Gardenias offer their iconic fragrance, while hydrangeas continue to impress with their large, lush blooms, especially in shaded spots.

What to Plant Now for a Beautiful Fall Garden

Even though it’s hot outside, now is the perfect time to start planning and planting for fall. With the right choices, your yard or section in the community garden can stay colorful and vibrant well into October and November.

  1. Fall Annuals to Start from Seed or Transplant in August
  • Pansies & Violas – Add cool-season color; start seeds indoors in July for planting in late August.
  • Snapdragons – Tall and colorful, they add height to fall beds and love cooler temps.
  • Ornamental Kale & Cabbage – Perfect for texture and color in fall planters and beds.
  1. Vegetables to Plant in Late July & August
  • Collards, Kale, Mustard Greens – Thrive in the cooler temps of late summer into fall.
  • Beets & Carrots – Sow seeds now for a fall harvest.
  • Lettuce & Spinach – Quick growers that can be succession planted into September.
  1. Perennials & Shrubs to Install Now
July is also a great time to plant native perennials or add structural shrubs like:
  • Russian Sage
  • Coreopsis
  • Boxwood or Dwarf Holly
Just be sure to water well as they establish in the summer heat.

Gardening Tips for Lake Oconee’s Climate

  • Water wisely: Water early in the morning, deeply and less frequently, to encourage strong root growth.
  • Mulch generously: Mulch not only keeps weeds at bay but also helps retain moisture during the hottest months.
  • Watch for pests: Heat and humidity can invite insects—inspect leaves regularly and use natural deterrents when possible.
  • Feed summer bloomers: A mid-season fertilizer boost can prolong blooms on annuals and flowering perennials.

Bringing Beauty to Your Backyard (and Beyond)

Whether you’re maintaining a full landscape, keeping a few container gardens on the porch, or getting your hands dirty in the Community Garden at The Grove, July is a rewarding time to get your hands in the dirt. Here at Harbor Club, the beauty of the lake is only enhanced by the vibrant gardens that surround it. With a little planning now, you can keep your landscape blooming well into fall—and enjoy the Southern outdoor lifestyle all season long.

Summer Gatherings and Unforgettable Moments

By: Kathy Phillips

At Harbor Club, we are looking forward to welcoming summer with fun gatherings and memorable moments as we embrace the exciting lake season ahead. With Memorial Day just around the corner, I’m excited to dive into a three-week celebration featuring tips for entertaining Southern style.

Week 1: Kitchen Comforts & Culinary Charms

Southern Kitchen ready for entertaining guests

The Kitchen is the heart of every home and the stage for culinary masterpieces. As you prepare to host your own gatherings this summer, consider these helpful tips:

• Efficient Layout: Keep your kitchen layout conducive to mingling amongst friends and family. Arrange seating areas or bar stools where guests can chat with the chef without getting in the way of meal prep.

• Ambient Lighting: Opt for warm, inviting lighting to create a cozy atmosphere (or embrace the natural sunlight for daytime parties!) Dimmable lights or candles can add a touch of elegance to your gatherings.

• Preparation is Key: Prep as much as you can ahead of time to minimize stress during the event. Chop ingredients, set the table, and pre-mix cocktails so you can enjoy the company of your guests without feeling overwhelmed.

Week 2: Memorial Day Homage

Cottage in Carriage Ridge at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee with American Flag on the front of the house

As we approach Memorial Day, Harbor Club is brimming with reverence and gratitude. This week, amidst the American flags and the solemn beauty of remembrance, we gather to pay homage to the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Here are some thoughtful ways to pay tribute while hosting your Patriotic Picnic:

• Patriotic Curb Appeal: Boost your home’s curb appeal with patriotic decorations like flags, bunting, or red, white, and blue flowerpots. A welcoming exterior sets the tone for your Memorial Day gathering and showcases your pride in the community and country.

• Memorial Garden Tribute: Create a memorial garden in your backyard as a tribute to fallen heroes. Plant red, white, and blue flowers, and consider adding a flagpole or plaque to honor those who have served. A serene outdoor space dedicated to remembrance can add a meaningful touch to your home.

• Outdoor Games with Patriotic Twist: Organize outdoor games and activities with a patriotic twist, such as a relay race with red, white, and blue obstacles, or a trivia game about the country’s history and symbols.

At Harbor Club, Memorial Day is not just a holiday—it’s a sacred opportunity to come together as a community, to honor the past, celebrate the present, and cherish the precious gift of freedom. So, as we raise our glasses in toast, let us also bow our heads in solemn remembrance, for it is because of their sacrifice that we are able to gather here today in peace and unity.

Week 3: Patio Parties & Sunset Soirees

Southern backyard porch with fire pit for entertaining at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

There’s something truly special about Southern-style homes and their curb appeal – those sprawling verandas where time seems to slow down, and the world feels just a little bit sweeter. This week, we’re trading our aprons for sun hats to embrace the art of patio and porch entertaining. Here are some tips to make the most of your outdoor entertaining space:

• Comfortable Seating: Invest in comfortable seating options like rocking chairs, porch swings, or cozy lounge chairs. Your guests will appreciate having a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the view.

• Decorative Touches: Add personal touches such as colorful throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and potted plants. Create a welcoming ambiance that reflects your personal style and invites guests to feel more at home.

• Scenic Lighting: Enhance the ambiance of your outdoor space by strategically placing outdoor lighting to highlight the scenic beauty around you. String lights, lanterns, or even solar-powered pathway lights can create a magical atmosphere as the sun sets and stars start to shine.

To conclude our series on Summer Gatherings and Unforgettable Moments at Harbor Club, we hope you’ve been inspired to make the most of this exciting lake season. From the heartwarming kitchen gatherings to the solemn Memorial Day tributes, and the enchanting patio parties, each moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories with friends and family. As you implement these tips and ideas, may your summer be filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful connections. Here’s to celebrating the beauty of summer at Harbor Club – a place where every gathering becomes a cherished moment in time. Cheers to a fantastic season ahead!

Outdoor Living: 7 Tips for Creating an Enjoyable Space

outdoor.jpg

Have you been spending more time outside? We’re seeing more of today’s homeowners “investing in place” and seeking additional utility and comfort from all areas of their homes – especially their outdoor living spaces. Lucky for us at Harbor Club, one of the advantages of living in Georgia is the ability to enjoy the mild weather all year round.

As homeowners embrace more outdoor living, demand for outdoor lifestyle products continues to grow. With that in mind, we’re sharing seven tips for making your outdoor living space the perfect oasis for family fun, entertaining friends, or peaceful relaxation.

Get made in the shade

If your outdoor space doesn’t offer shade from the sun, utilize things like patio umbrellas or pergolas. Sail shades provide an easy, attractive way to block the sun’s rays in outdoor living areas too. Or you could add a gazebo, which instantly adds a new outdoor room with protection from the elements. Another excellent long-term idea is to strategically plant trees around your outdoor living space to ensure they’ll provide shade in the future. Whichever you decide, all will take the edge off on a hot summer day by providing shelter from the heat and protection from a passing summer shower.

Add functional furniture

Consider how you want to use your outdoor space. Did you want to utilize it primarily for dining, relaxing, or entertaining? Most people like a combination of all three, so choose practical and comfortable furniture for your favorite outdoor endeavors. Opt for weather-resistant and washable items and use colors and patterns that match your interior style. Also, add a few small movable tables, which are handy for holding snacks, cocktails, or your favorite book.

Maximize movie night

More families are moving their home movie nights from the indoors out. It’s an enjoyable and unique cinematic experience to watch a film or favorite show projected onto a portable screen from the comfort of your cozy outdoor space. Invest in a good portable outdoor projector, as they are significantly brighter, have a clearer picture, and work well with larger screens…or, in a pinch, a blank wall of your house.

Up your grill game

Everyone loves the delicious aroma of a barbeque. An outdoor grill offers a culinary experience that’s memorable for all. And today, there are tons of options for grilling and cooking outside. You can choose from gas grills, charcoal grills, and pellet grills. There are also gas and wood-fired pizza ovens, which make for delicious, rustic pies. Then, of course, there are Big Green Eggs, Blackstone griddles, and a wide variety of smokers, all of which will significantly enhance your epicurean offerings. (Much to the delight of your family and friends.)

Unwind with water

A small water feature adds a soothing addition to your space. Even a modest trickling fountain can help you relax and lower your blood pressure. Granted, many Harbor Club residents are fortunate to have pretty water views, either of Lake Oconee or one of our tranquil ponds. If you’re one of them, be sure to enhance those views with an outdoor living area that takes advantage of what nature has provided.

Fire it up

You don’t have to move the party inside if it gets chilly. Instead, extend your outdoor entertaining season by adding an outdoor patio heater or a fire pit with cozy seating. Your fire pit doesn’t have to be elaborate. You can purchase a ready-made fire pit table or a fire bowl. They’re attractive and easy to install. Have your favorite marshmallow-roasting supplies handy for when a s’mores opportunity strikes.

Lighten the mood with lighting

If you’ve got an outdoor cooking area, include appropriate lighting to make meal prep a cinch. You can also add more visual interest and expand the feel of your outdoor space by up-lighting your surrounding trees. Or hang outdoor string lights around your porch, patio, or pergola. Consider decorative lighting on your steps and walkways, as they provide admirable accents. Moreover, they make paths safer for you and your guests to navigate at night.

Here at Harbor Club, we see plenty of homeowners maximizing the comfort and utility of their outdoor living spaces. It’s an easy way to leverage the investment in their homes. Plus, our builders know the importance of living well inside and out with thoughtfully designed homes that best use those spaces. We invite you to our Southern Living-Inspired Community to see several gorgeous homes under construction right now. Why wait? Lake Oconee is lovely to experience any time of year, so contact us now and let’s start planning your visit today

Augusta National’s Trees and Flowers: Mimic The Masters Landscape

masters-50.jpeg

Did you know that Augusta National was built on the grounds of a former nursery? Known as Fruitland Nursery, it operated from 1857 to 1910. Perhaps that’s why the famed course seems like a sporting venue with arboretum tendencies, especially during The Masters. The gorgeous trees and flowers there are famous worldwide. In fact, every hole on the course is named after flora found on the course. Lucky for us at Harbor Club, we’re located in the same plant zone as Augusta National (8a), so it’s easy to mimic the colorful landscape.

For planting ideas, here’s a list of each of the holes and a description of each of their namesakes.

Hole 1 – Tea Olive

Also known as sweet osmanthus, sweet olive, and fragrant olive, it is a species native to Asia. They grow as dense, evergreen shrubs or small trees, and their leaves resemble holly leaves. This plant is well known for its tiny white flowers with a fantastic, unforgettable fragrance. You’ll find tea olives at hole 1 on the right of the fairway and at the rear of the green.

Hole 2 – Pink Dogwood

The pink dogwood tree is a medium-sized ornamental notable for its multitude of pretty pastel flowers. The flowers make their showing in early spring for about two to four weeks. Later those flowers turn to red berries. You’ll find pink dogwoods at hole 2 on both sides of the fairway.

Hole 3 – Flowering Peach

This one is no surprise considering Georgia is known as the Peach State. This ornamental tree’s pink blooms, with clusters of single or double flowering peach petals, are sights to see from March to early April. Note that this tree is known more for its ornamental characteristics and not the quality of its fruit. You’ll find flowering peach trees on the right side of the fairway.

Hole 4 – Flowering Crabapple

One of the most prized small ornamental trees is the flowering crabapple. They are best known for their showy pink flowers that bloom from late March into early April. Many offer colorful fruit in the fall. You’ll find flowering crabapple trees on the right side of hole 4 leading up to the green.

Hole 5 – Magnolia

A quintessentially Southern tree, magnolias are a deciduous evergreen prized for its large, highly-fragrant, tulip- or star-shaped flowers. You’ll find magnolias throughout Augusta National. In fact, the entrance to Augusta National is known as Magnolia Lane, and it’s lined with 122 majestic magnolia trees, 61 on each side.

Hole 6 – Juniper

Also known as red cedar, juniper is an evergreen coniferous ornamental with aromatic cones and foliage. They are members of the cypress family. You’ll find junipers at hole 6 around the tee and around the right side of the green.

Hole 7 – Pampas

Pampas grass is an attractive ornamental flowering grass that sends up its plume-like flowers in August. This reed-like grass is very easy to grow here, as it loves hot summers and mild winters. Mature plants can reach 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

Hole 8 – Yellow Jasmine

Yellow Jasmine is an evergreen vine with yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom from February through late April. It’s a fast-growing plant and highly aromatic. It’s easy to spot throughout the South, covering fences and trees in open woodlands. Yellow jasmine also works well as a ground cover as long as it’s cut back annually.

Hole 9 – Carolina Cherry

The Carolina Cherry tree is an extremely drought tolerant full sun tree easily grown as a stand-alone shade tree or hedge to block unwanted views. It’s an evergreen that produces small creamy white flowers in two-inch clusters from February to April. Its leaves have a maraschino cherry fragrance when crushed. You’ll find Carolina cherry trees at hole 9 on the right side of the fairway.

Hole 10 – Camellia

Camellias are beautiful evergreen shrubs highly prized for their gorgeous flowers. They bloom prolifically for weeks from fall into spring. Camellias come in many varieties and colors, and several have multi-colored blooms. The most common colors are pink, red, or white. The japonica and sasanqua species are the famous ones found at hole 10. You’ll see them at the rear of the green and to the left of the fairway.

Hole 11 – White Dogwood

The white dogwood tree is a popular one in the South. The white “bracts” or blooms make a showing from April through May. It offers glossy green leaves in the summer, bright red berries in the fall, and showy bark in the winter, making it lovely to look at all year round.

Hole 12 – Golden Bell

More commonly known as Forsythia, this is a fast-growing shrub that yields tons of prolific yellow flowers in March and early April. It’s an easy plant to grow and is nearly maintenance-free. You’ll find golden bell at hole 12 behind the green.

Hole 13 – Azalea

With over 30 varieties present, azaleas are the most noted flowering plant at Augusta National. Part of the rhododendron family, it’s a deciduous shrub with tons of brightly colored, sometimes fragrant blooms that last several weeks in spring. It’s shade tolerant and prefers living near or under trees. From tee to green, you’ll find hole 13 flanked on its south side by as many as 1,600 flowering azalea bushes. They are everywhere at Augusta National.

Hole 14 – Chinese Fir

Chinese Fir is a coniferous evergreen tree from the cypress family. It has fragrant, gray, or reddish-brown bark that sheds in long strips. This tree grows up to 160 feet, with a circumference of about 18 feet. The spreading branches droop at the ends and have flat lance-shaped leaves and rounded cones.

Hole 15 – Firethorn

Belonging to the rose family, this is an evergreen shrub that’s easy to grow. Firethorn provides lots of seasonal interest. It keeps its shiny leaves year-round and offers small creamy-white flowers that appear in April. The flowers later develop into prolific orange-red berries that remain from fall through winter.

Hole 16 – Redbud

Redbud is a small deciduous tree that also grows as a shrub. It’s well-known for its bright pink flowers that blossom from the trunk, branches, and twigs from March into April. It has heart-shaped leaves that emerge a reddish-purple color, turning dark green as summer approaches and turning yellow in the fall. Redbuds are often planted in landscapes but also grow naturally in woodlands.

Hole 17 – Nandina

Nandina is a flowering evergreen shrub. It is also called “Heavenly Bamboo.” While it’s not from the bamboo family, its leaves resemble it. Nandina offers white blooms in May and spectacular red berries from fall into winter. In spring, the young leaves are bright pink, which later turn fiery red, and then ultimately green.

Hole 18 – Holly

Considering both an evergreen and an ornamental, holly trees are well-known for their tiny white flowers, bright red berries, and glossy, prickly-edged leaves. Hollies keep their foliage year-round, but only the female trees produce berries. Boughs of holly are often used as decor around Christmastime.

Plants from the Southern Living Plant Collection

southern-living-plant.jpeg

Living at Harbor Club, have you ever wondered which iconic southern plants would grow best at our location? The Southern Living Plant Collection is an excellent place to start…especially since we are a Southern Living-Inspired Community.

The experts at Southern Living introduced the collection in 2008 both to inspire and assist Southerners with solving landscape challenges.

Every plant in the collection is tested to ensure that it survives and thrives in our warm climate (Note: Our community is located in zone 7b.) The thoughtfully chosen plants are well-known for bigger, longer-lasting blooms and stunning foliage. Lucky for Harbor Club residents, our local Home Depot carries many of the plants in the Southern Living Collection, but you can also easily find them online. Here’s are some of the South’s most iconic options to try.

Azaleas

Popular at The Masters, these shrubs are always stunning during peak bloom. You’ll find their frilly flowers in many colors: reds, pinks, purples, whites, oranges, and yellows. All offer bright blossoms, and many have a divine scent. Try to buy plants while they’re in bloom to ensure you get the colors you prefer. It’s best to plant clumps of the same cultivar and color for a stunning display.

Try: Sunbow Solar Flare Azalea. It produces neon-yellow blooms with additional shades of orange. It has a sweet fragrance (somewhat like honeysuckle), and butterflies love it.

Camellias

Known as the “Queens of the Winter Flowers,” camellias bloom during the cold season months. Therefore, flowering occurs during ideal planting times — from October through November for Camellia sasanqua and February through March for Camellia japonica. As much as we love them, deer don’t care for camellias — a good thing when you live at Harbor Club.

Try: October Magic Ivory Camellia. This variety is among the earliest to bloom. It has lovely white double blossoms that appear from October to January.

Gardenia

Surprisingly, gardenias are members of the coffee plant family. They are renowned and loved in the South for their superb, heady fragrance and gorgeous, creamy-white flowers. The blooms contrast beautifully with their shiny, dark-green foliage.

Try: Fool Proof Gardenia. In the spring, it offers tons of highly fragrant, white flowers. Once those blooms drop, this cultivar will bud up again and rebloom through the fall season.

Hydrangea

It’s a well-known fact that Southerners love to clip and share hydrangea blooms with loved ones. During the warm days of summer, you’ll see huge balloons of pretty blossoms in blues, pinks, purples, and white. Their lush green foliage makes for a lovely background.

Try: White Wedding. It produces white, cone-shaped blooms each summer with large, long-lasting flowers. These are perfect for flower arrangements. A bonus is that this variety is compact, so pruning is rarely necessary.

Crape myrtle

Commonly referred to as the “Lilac of the South,” our summers would not be the same without our beautiful, blooming crape myrtles. They tolerate heat, humidity, and drought and flower all summer long. The wrinkled flower petals look like crape paper, thus the name. Colorful blooms range from pink to deep red to white or light purple. The bark is attractive, and the foliage is dark green. In the fall, the leaves change to pretty yellows, oranges, and reds.

Try: Early Bird Lavender Crape Myrtle. This variety starts to bloom as early as Mother’s Day, which is much earlier than other varieties. It then reblooms for about four months afterward with gorgeous lavender blooms. This is a semi-dwarf variety and gets to be only about five to eight feet tall.

Magnolia

No other tree or shrub conjures up images of the South like a magnolia. The native “Magnolia grandiflora” is the most classic Southern variety with large, glossy leaves and huge, fragrant, creamy-white blossoms. Grown as ornamentals, and depending on the type, blooms can be creamy-white or pink and have a tulip or bowl shape.

Try: Stellar Ruby Magnolia. It boasts pink-red blooms that are uniquely banana-scented. The flowers appear in late spring and continue blooming into the summer and early fall.

Need some additional advice or ideas? Harbor Club residents can find fellow gardening enthusiasts at our Victory Garden located on The Grove campus. Or take a look at the Southern Living Plant Collection online for inspiration and additional information about our plant suggestions. We wish you many beautiful blooms and happy planting.

Fun idea: Enjoy an unforgettable ride on a lux wooden boat via Oconee Classic Boats.

Take a swim

When it comes to a refreshing dip, you’ve got options at Harbor Club. First, of course, you can jump in Lake Oconee’s cool water. But if you’re more of a pool person, we’ve got a crystal clear, junior Olympic-sized option for you to cool off in too.

Fun idea: Check out The Sandbar or Jumping Rock — both are hidden gems on Lake Oconee that are the perfect swimming spots for creating fun memories.

Go fish

Catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass are plentiful in Lake Oconee. But did you know that Harbor Club also has several large ponds stocked with fish? Lake or pond, no matter where you drop your line, you’re bound to go home with a prize fish, or at the very least some great tales to tell.

Fun idea: Try BigFishHeads Guide Service for an incredible day of crappie or striper fishing.

Play lakefront golf

Our lakefront golf course in Georgia is strategically located alongside picturesque Lake Oconee, making a game at Harbor Club as gratifying as it is engaging. The course touches the shoreline of Lake Oconee on six different holes. It also skirts four creeks and offers several renowned Weiskopf-Morrish Risk Reward holes. See a virtual view of our course, or better yet, book a tee time to experience it for yourself.

Fun idea: Head to the Pro Shop to get fitted for golf clubs, perfectly sized just for you.

Learn about Lake Oconee

At the Lake Oconee Discovery Museum, you’ll learn about the culture, history, and natural landscape that makes Georgia’s Lake Country so special. It offers tons of interesting photos, fascinating historical exhibits, art, memorabilia, videos, informational kiosks, and interactive multimedia displays. Also, don’t miss the documentary tribute to Georgia Power’s Wallace Dam and Lake Oconee reservoir.

Fun idea: Take a look at the museum’s impressive, large-scale topographic map of Lake Oconee and be the first to find Harbor Club’s location on the lake.

Eat lakeside

Part of our Boathouse Marina is The Boathouse Restaurant, which is open during the summer months. It’s one of Lake Oconee’s only “boat-up” eateries where you can not only fuel up your watercraft but yourself too with cold drinks, tasty snacks, and mouthwatering meals. You can eat inside, outside on the deck, or on the grand lawn — all offer gorgeous views of the lake. Or, if you come by boat, feel free to order your meals to-go so you can have a picnic out on the water.

Fun idea: During the summertime, The Boathouse offers free, live music on Saturdays. Follow us on Facebook to see the upcoming concert events.

Don’t be surprised to see a lot of Harbor Club residents enjoying the lake this summer. Our Southern Living-Inspired Community provides every one of them with direct access to Lake Oconee via The Boathouse Marina. Men’s Core for Golf: A New Fitness Class at Harbor Club

golf-harbor-club.jpg

You may recall our last chat with one of our most popular fitness instructors at Harbor Club, Maureen (Mo) Brower. She’s currently teaching classes on Core, Barre & Toning, and now a new one called Men’s Core For Golf.

Considering that many of our gentlemen residents and members are avid golfers, it’s the perfect fitness regimen to give their game (and themselves) a healthy boost. We recently sat down with Mo to find out more about this new fitness class and how it can give the guys an edge on the golf course…and in life. Here’s the scoop:

What prompted you to teach this class at Harbor Club, and where is it taught?

“I was approached by some of the members one day, and they asked if I would consider teaching a core class for men. I thought it was a great idea, so we made it happen. It’s taught on Monday mornings from 8-8:45 AM in the Fitness Center, located at The Grove.”

How many students currently attend the class? Are there still COVID protocols in place?

“At this time, there’s only a handful of men in attendance, which is typical of a brand new class. Once the word gets out and people start seeing the benefits, I’m certain it will become more popular. As far as COVID protocols are concerned, we’re careful about social distancing. Also, the members currently taking the class are fully vaccinated, as am I.”

Describe who would benefit most from this class and why?

“Any gentleman would benefit from taking the Men’s Core For Golf class, even if they don’t play golf. A strong core has tons of benefits. Building a strong core helps train the pelvis, abdomen, hip, and lower back muscles to work better together. The result is improved stability and balance, which is great to have on the golf course or not. In fact, most physical activities depend on a strong core. What’s more, it helps to avoid lower back pain, which is fairly common in men over the age of 40.”

What are examples of some of the exercises you conduct in class?

“We use weights, resistance bands, and resistance tubes in a wide variety of exercises. All work the core in various ways. Some of the exercises include modified planks, elevated glute bridges, oblique twists, and lateral squats. As with any good fitness class, it can be a little challenging, but it’s also fun and gratifying. And I can guarantee that class is never boring!”

What are some of the main benefits men gain from doing these exercises when it comes to golf?

“It offers several. A stronger core gives your golf swing more power, increases your driving distance, and gives you the ability to play longer and without pain. The main result is that you’ll enjoy the game even more.”

Aside from this class, can you share other quick fitness tips or tricks to help a golfer improve their game?

“It’s very typical for men to have tight hips. Loosening up the hips is essential for playing a great game of golf, so I recommend both stretching and yoga. We do several stretches in class, and I happily give advice on stretches that can be done before playing a round.”

Intrigued? All gentlemen members of Harbor Club are invited to give this new fitness class a try. And if you’re not a member of Harbor Club yet, let’s change that. Not only does it provide you with access to award-winning golf, but also a wide variety of top-notch amenities, fantastic social events, special discounts, and more. Harbor Club memberships are not just for residents of our Southern Living-Inspired Community — they’re open to all Lake Country residents. To learn more, contact us today.

Gardening in Georgia: Top Crops for April, May, June, and July

garden.jpeg

A joy of living where we do is the gardens and the bounties of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Here, you can plant or harvest something from your garden almost all year long. Now that we’re well into spring and heading into the summer season, it’s the best time of year to plant your favorites. Not sure what to grow? Our friends at the Athens-based University of Georgia Extension have a great list, broken down by month, to help you discover and decide on what’s best. But for the next few months, here are some ideas for top crops to plant and the best ways to achieve gardening success in our own backyard

April

April is the time to plant your favorite “warm-season” or “frost-tender” crops. These include beans (snap, pole and lima), cantaloupe, sweet corn, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, field peas, peppers, squash, tomatoes, and watermelon. For better pollination and bountiful success, plant at least two or more rows and mulch well between each. April is also the best time to plant herbs.

May

Plant another set of the vegetables mentioned for April, particularly snap beans, corn, squash, and lima beans. The additional planting allows you to enjoy a more extended harvest period for those veggies. Also, apply extra mulch to your established tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, okra, and lima beans before any dry spells occur. Thicker mulch also helps to keep weeds to a minimum.

June

When two-thirds of the tops of your onions and potatoes have died down, it’s time to harvest them. To keep them fresh, store onions in a dry, air-filled place. Store your potatoes in a dark, cool place. June is also the perfect time to plant sweet potatoes as well as an additional planting of Southern peas.

July

With it being mid-summer, it’s important to get your timing right on your next planting of vegetables. Plant your last sets of tomatoes, okra, corn, pole beans, lima beans, cucumbers, squash, and snap beans no later than July 20. That way, they have enough time to mature before the first frost. July is also the perfect time to plant your pumpkins to ensure they’re ready for Halloween.

Got more gardening questions? We’re fortunate to have a subsidiary of UGA’s Extension right here in Greene County. They’re located at 1180 C. Weldon Smith Dr, Suite 110, in Greensboro. Take a look at their website or follow them on Facebook for more info or to get in touch. Of course, residents of Harbor Club also have access to our Victory Garden located at The Grove, not to mention the expansive knowledge of our gardening group. Fall Golf: Play Better in Changing Conditions

fall-golf-conditions.jpg

With the gorgeous season of fall now in full swing, we’re seeing a lot of people swinging their clubs on our award-winning golf course. It’s no surprise, as it’s a fantastic time of year to play at Harbor Club — in fact, many believe it’s the best. The weather is cooler, and the leaves are changing into stunning hues. But, with changing weather comes changing course conditions.

Here’s what you can anticipate, along with thoughts and tips on how to make your fall golf game better than ever at Harbor Club.

Ditch the disruption of overseeding

Primarily a cosmetic process to keep golf courses green, many overseed their warm-season grass with cold-season grass. Most courses close during the overseeding process — one that often includes aeration, verticutting, scalping, and more. It creates a significant disruption for players.

Harbor Club’s take: While we do plan to overseed our driving range tee in early October, we do not overseed playing surfaces in autumn. Instead, we’ll use turf colorants (later in the season) to enhance the course’s visibility. That attractive color lasts into the winter months.

The advantage: Harbor Club golfers don’t have to deal with the disruptions and course closures that overseeding requires at other courses. They can enjoy the fresh air, beautiful weather, and colorful foliage from fall right into winter.

Bentgrass greens are at their best

Bentgrass is a popular type of cool-season grass used on golf courses. It’s the preferred turf where true ball roll is the priority for the surface.

Harbor Club’s take: We’re proud to say that our greens are bentgrass — and what’s more, they are at their finest in the fall. Here in Georgia, bentgrass thrives in the cooler weather from October through May.

The advantage: If you like a firm, smooth, and quick playing surface, then fall is the perfect time to play Harbor Club. Plus, if the turf is wet, it will make your ball roll farther down the fairways and greens after it lands. It’s a bonus that can boost your score.

Fall foliage – friend or foe?

Seeing the leaves change from the lush greens of summer to the bright golds, oranges, and reds of autumn is nothing short of breathtaking. But as lovely as it is in early fall, it’s not so great to deal with leaf debris on the ground later in the season.

Harbor Club’s take: We’ve got a lot of deciduous trees on the property, which makes for a beautifully scenic fall round. Early fall is a better time to play, as November and December are the peak months of leaf/debris clean-up on our course.

The advantage: Play in early fall, and you won’t have to deal with as much leaf debris. Even better, golf rules are slightly relaxed during autumn. For most players, it’s OK to play the “leaf rule.” If your ball has disappeared in the leaf-strewn rough, take a one-stroke penalty and drop another ball. Relaxed rules like this one mean less stress, quicker play, and more fun for everyone.

No matter the time of year, our Golf Course Superintendent, Jeff Miller, and his team do a fantastic job keeping our course in tip-top shape. While fall is one of the best times to enjoy a round at Harbor Club, our temperate climate gives you the unique ability to play almost any day of the year. Why not give it a shot? (Pun intended.) Learn to Play Golf: It’s Not Too Late

Golf lessons available for everyone

Many of us are working from home now and need a healthy diversion for getting out of the house. Golf lessons are the perfect solution. At Harbor Club, we offer a wide variety of lessons for people of all ages and skill levels. Our friendly golf pros conduct private and group lessons for everyone — adults, juniors, men, and ladies. If you don’t own clubs, don’t worry. The pros can provide a set for you or help you find ones that fit you best

Golf is safe to play during the pandemic

Fortunately, golf is an outdoor sport that is easy to enjoy, even with the current social distancing protocols in place. Our highly-acclaimed, 18-hole, Weiskopf-Morrish-designed golf course offers fairways and greens that make the course beautiful and fun to play for all skill levels. You not only get to play our award-winning course but also have access to the driving range, short-game facility, and putting green, which helps you practice and perfects your game even more. To keep you and everyone else safer than ever, we’ve put the following rules and procedures in place:

  • All players must maintain social distancing before, during, and after the game.
  • One rider is allowed per golf cart. Families may ride together.
  • All coolers, ball washers, and bunker rakes have been removed from the course.
  • There’s no need for golfers to touch the flags. We’re now using either an inverted cup or one slightly above the turf on each hole.
  • The cart staff is taking extra measures to clean and sanitize each cart after every use.

Golf is a great workout

This is especially true if you walk the course, which is typically around four miles. And if you carry your clubs, you get an even better workout. Golfweek gave an estimate of calories burned while playing an average 9-hole golf course, finding that:

  • Golfers who walk and carry their bag burn 721 calories
  • Golfers using a pull cart burn 718 calories
  • Golfers walking with a caddie burn 613 calories
  • Golfers riding in a golf cart burn 411 calories

Imagine how many calories you’ll burn while playing an 18-hole course like ours

Golf adds longevity to your life

The ScienceDaily reported that a Swedish study found golfers had a 40% lower rate of death than the rest of the population. What a fantastic way to prolong your life.

So, why wait any longer? Indulge yourself. With so many great benefits, contact the Harbor Club pro shop to schedule your golf lessons today. You’ll be glad you did.

Coronavirus: How to Swim Safely This Summer

pool.jpg

When you think of summer, do you think of swimming? We certainly do. Everyone loves to take a dip in the pool or Lake Oconee. Jumping in the water is always a refreshing way to cool off and get a bit of exercise. But, is it safe to swim during a pandemic? It can be. Here’s what you need to know:

Can I get COVID-19 from swimming in the lake?

No, the lake is safe since the virus that causes COVID-19 is not transmitted through water. Coronavirus’ principal means of transmission is respiratory, so swimming in lake water isn’t going to get you sick.

Can I get COVID-19 from swimming in the pool?

According to the CDC, the virus that causes COVID19 doesn’t spread through pool water either. As long as the pool is maintained and the equipment operates properly, the chlorine can do its job of disinfecting the water and killing any presence of the virus.

Do I have to practice social distancing while IN the pool?

Yes, it’s a good idea. While you can’t get COVID-19 directly through pool water, it’s not a 100% guarantee that you won’t catch the virus while in the pool. Why? No matter where you are, the coronavirus spreads person-to-person. If you’re in the pool and a person near you coughs, you could inhale their droplets. So, whether in the pool or out, avoid congregating in groups and strive to maintain at least six feet of physical distance away from others.

What’s the best way to avoid getting infected?

Whether you’re in the lake or pool, it’s impossible to know if another person swimming in the water is infected, so try to play it safe and maintain social distancing at all times. Even though a person may not show any symptoms of illness, asymptomatic people can still transmit the COVID-19

What are the newest pool rules and protocols at Harbor Club?

Safety is, and always has been, a high priority at Harbor Club. To keep our members and residents safe at the pool, we recommend the following:

  • Group gatherings must be no more than ten people.
  • Chairs are separated into small groups that are six feet apart to encourage social distancing among patrons.
  • Please limit your time at the pool to two hours per visit.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and shared objects each time they are used.
  • Staying aware of local or state regulatory agency policies on gathering requirements or recommendations to determine if events, such as aquatic fitness classes, swim lessons, swim team practice, swim meets, or pool parties can be held.

All Harbor Club members have access to our crystal-clear, Junior-Olympic-sized pool. If you’re not already in the club, consider joining the fun! There are different options available, and any Lake Country resident is qualified to participate. Besides the pool, you get access to award-winning golf, and so much more. Feel free to contact us with your questions. We’re happy to help.

Tips for Sticking to Healthy Resolutions

pickleball___tennis.jpg

Are you struggling to stick to your New Year’s health and fitness resolutions? You’re not the only one. According to U.S. News & World Report, the failure rate for all New Year’s resolutions is around 80 percent. It doesn’t have to be that way, especially here at Harbor Club. Here are helpful tips on how to finally stick to your healthy resolutions once and for all.

Start with smaller goals

Instant gratification is the norm in today’s world. But when it comes to things like quickly dropping a lot of weight or becoming a marathon runner, they aren’t going to happen overnight. Try breaking down your bigger goals into smaller ones so that you can more easily achieve them. It’s slow, but steady progress and just as rewarding if you can practice a bit of patience.

Include a workout buddy

You don’t have to go it alone when trying to achieve your health and fitness goals. Include a workout buddy to help keep you both accountable. When you work out with friends, you’ll not only have someone to socialize with; you likely encourage each other to keep going and applaud the efforts made.

Make it fun

If you know you dislike running, don’t try to force yourself into doing it. Identify fitness activities that you enjoy and focus on those instead. Better yet, try intriguing new exercise regimens to see if any spark your interest. You never know until you try — and you may discover an exciting, new sport that you love. Gamifying your fitness goals, either via online apps or with your workout buddy, are other fun tactics. A small, friendly wager can inspire a lot of gleeful banter filled with good-natured jeers and cheers — both of which fuel encouragement too.

If you need some fitness ideas, here are a few to try:

Go for a walk or run

There are many options for enjoying a heart-pumping walk or run at Harbor Club. Try the quarter-mile track, the hiking trail, the Fit-Trail®, or hop on a state-of-the-art treadmill at The Grove. And with over 25-miles of well-maintained roads in our gated community, it’s easy to go for a quick walk or run in the neighborhood whenever it’s convenient for you.

Take a fitness class

We’ve got plenty of classes available at our Fitness Center — why not try one, or even a few? There are options for yoga, Zumba, Jazzercise, barre, core, and stretch. Bring along a friend for twice the fun. Men’s Golf Yoga Conditioning, for example, might be less intimidating if you bring your workout buddy. (Note: You’ll happily discover that this particular class isn’t threatening at all.)

Play golf

Our highly popular, award-winning, Weiskopf/Morrish-designed golf course is sure to delight anyone who loves to swing a club. Grab your workout buddy (or friends, family, colleagues, etc.) and up your fitness game by walking the course. Its varied terrain will provide an incredible workout while having a great time.

Play pickleball or tennis

With both tennis and several new pickleball courts, we have plenty of ways to help you get your racket swinging. Aside from playing either sport at your leisure, we offer scheduled clinics, group play, and tournaments. We have a great group of people who make it easy to match you up to others who play at your level, from novice to experienced.

If you’re ready to embrace a healthy, new lifestyle in 2020, you’ll find it’s easy to achieve at Harbor Club. We have everything you need to hit and maintain your fitness goals this year and beyond. Get started today!

Junior Golf: Why Kids Should Play

junior-golf.jpeg

How many kids do you know that play golf? Of those, we’re willing to bet that those junior golfers are some of the most impressive, well-rounded young adults you know. We also believe that playing the game has something to do with their success and achievements. You may have already read our previous post about the benefits of junior golf, but here are a few more reasons why kids should play.

Teaches civility

Learning civility at a young age is an asset. The game of golf helps to teach children respect, good manners, and proper etiquette, not only on the course but in life too. It’s easy to admire a young person who cultivates, demonstrates, and values these excellent traits.

No two games are alike

Even if playing on the same course multiple times, players will discover that no two games are alike. The conditions are always changing, there are different players, new tactics are employed, and results can vary each time. Every round is as compelling as the last.

Golf mimics life

Just like in life, players experience the highest of highs, mediocrity, and the lowest of lows on the golf course. It’s a sport that gives players the ability to take advantage of new opportunities, strategize and plan next moves, learn how to be laser-focused, be humbled from mistakes, persevere, and move on. It’s good practice for junior golfers since life operates in much the same way.

Practice anywhere

One of golf’s better assets is that practice can occur almost anywhere. Of course, there is the course itself, the range, and the putting green — all the typical “go-to’s.” However, players are known for practicing putts in the living room, perfecting swings in the garage, and chipping out on the lawn, among other non-traditional places (even the office.)

Age doesn’t matter

The world’s oldest golfer is over 100 years old. Tiger Woods started playing at the young age of two. Golf is a fantastically rare sport that connects multiple age generations. Young or old, it’s a game where all players can enjoy the company (and the examples) of others.

Different ways to play

Don’t want to play 18 holes? There’s nothing wrong with playing less. Also, a player can join a team or play as an individual. Formats can be Texas-scramble, foursomes, Ryder Cup, match play — there are tons of possibilities. With so many different ways to play, every round has the ability to be unique and more interesting than the last.

The earlier your kids start, the better

There are lots of advantages for playing golf at a young age. What’s more, if a child discovers they love the sport, it could lead to a college scholarship. Some may end up finding their life’s passion with a long-lasting professional career (much longer than that of a pro football player, for example.) Starting at a young age means the child can cultivate the skills necessary to play a superior game. As a result, they’ll gain pride, gratification, and most of all, confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Do you have questions on how to get your children started with golf? We’re happy to help with lessons, junior golf camp, and more. Give our pro shop a call today at (706) 453-4414.

Gardening: Like Going to the Gym but Better

garden.jpg

Our good friends at Southern Living magazine recently published an article titled, “A New Study Says Gardening Is Just as Good As Going to the Gym.” As attention-grabbing as that is, we think it’s possible that gardening could be even better than a gym workout. How? As much as we love our gym workouts, there are several unique health benefits that gardening offers.

Boosts your vitamin D

When you’re outside in the sun, your exposed skin naturally produces Vitamin D. To absorb calcium properly, your body must have that vital nutrient. What happens if you’re not absorbing enough calcium? Your body grabs it from somewhere else — typically the stores in your skeleton, which can result in weakened bones. As we age, we want to avoid that as much as possible. Getting enough Vitamin D and calcium absorption will help you resist fractures, osteoporosis, and other detrimental bone health issues.

Receive a hormone high

Studies have shown that inhaling the bacteria “M. vaccae” can both reduce anxiety while increasing levels of the happy hormone, serotonin. Where can you find this “M. vaccae”? Believe it or not, it’s in dirt. It’s a healthy bacteria that love to live in the soil. Now you have all the more reason to dig your hands into the earth happily knowing that “dirt don’t hurt.”

Heal faster

If you’re in the process of healing, either physically, emotionally, or both, the simple act of being outside in a natural environment (like a pretty garden) can help you recover. An article from Scientific American mentions two groups of patients recovering from surgery: one who could look out their hospital windows at leafy, green trees, while the other had only a brick wall. Not surprisingly, the group with the natural, tree-lined view healed much more quickly, required less pain medication, and had fewer complications during their healing process.

Influences healthy eating

When you grow your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables, you gain more than just delicious produce. The whole process creates a desire to indulge in and eat the bounty you worked so hard to cultivate. You already know that there is nothing like the taste of a warm, juicy, homegrown tomato picked at the peak of ripeness. Having ready access to that kind of fresh, delicious food will inspire you to enjoy more of it …and share it too (especially when it comes to a bountiful zucchini harvest.)

So whether you want to do some healthy gardening or prefer to do a heart-pumping gym workout, we’ve got you covered either way. Simply head to The Grove where you’ll find both our Victory Garden and our Fitness Center. The Grove campus is just one of the many amenities we enjoy at Harbor Club. We’d be happy to show it to you and so much more. Contact us today for a personalized tour.

Bent Trees: Native American Trail Markers

bent-tree.jpeg

If you’ve ever seen an oddly bent tree in our local woods, you may have happened upon a trail tree. These special trees are unique. Created by Native Americans as navigational tools, they represent ancient trail markers that helped them traverse long distances with ease.

As land development continues today, these special trees are, unfortunately, vanishing at an increased rate. Good land stewards that we are, we know how fortunate we are at Harbor Club to have one of these fascinating Native American legacies. Better yet, our bent tree is alive, well, and protected within our gates.

Bent trees were originally saplings that were purposely bent in the correct direction for accurate trail navigation. The bend of a baby hardwood tree (typically a white oak) was secured with items such as sinew, rawhide, or vines. Alternatively, the saplings were weighted down with dirt or rocks. The tree would be left bent in the bent position for about year. After that, the tie-downs were released. The tree would then continue to grow with the “elbow” pointing in the proper direction.

The practice of creating the bends in the saplings did not kill the trees. It did, however, change their development. As the trees continued to grow, the bends would sometimes touch the ground. When that happened, it would often produce a second set of roots and possibly form an additional trunk.

What were the trees pointing to? While trail designation was the most popular use, the trees could have been manipulated toward other significant things. These could be an ideal spot to cross a stream, sites for medicinal plants, council circles, trading posts, and sacred burial grounds.

The Trail Tree Project, maintained by The Mountain Stewards nonprofit group, keeps a database of bent trees that exist throughout the eastern part of the United States. Trail trees are not protected by law, so to keep them safe, the database only shows a large general area in which a particular bent tree is located.

If you happen upon a bent tree, ours in particular, be respectful of it and its historical significance. Please do not climb or sit on the tree and its fragile branches. We want to ensure that these unique living relics continue to thrive for others to admire and appreciate in the future.

If you come to Harbor Club for a tour, we’d be happy to show you our cherished bent tree. It’s one of many fantastic things to see and experience at our Southern Living-Inspired Community. Start planning your visit today.

Additional Pickleball Courts Coming to Harbor Club

new-pickleball-courts.png

Pickleball. It’s such a weird name, isn’t it? For those that first hear of it, they might envision an odd-shaped ball that looks like a pickle. Well, we’re here to tell you that it’s hardly that. Pickleball is actually a fast-growing court sport that is part tennis, part ping-pong, and part badminton all rolled into one.

Whether you are young or “young at heart,” it’s a heart-pumping game that offers tremendous health benefits and, even better, is tons of fun to play. Here at Harbor Club, we installed three new pickleball courts back in the summer of 2016. The amenity has become so popular that we’ve decided to add several more pickleball courts to our Southern Living-Inspired Community.

Currently, our pickleball courts are housed at our Swim and Tennis Center, which is located in the heart of our 1600-acre community. The brand new pickleball courts, however, are going to be installed at our Grove facility. As one of our newest amenities, The Grove campus is the perfect spot to add yet another fitness-based feature to the long list of many that exist there. These include a 2000 square foot fitness center, walking trails, a quarter-mile track, a sports field, dog park, a Victory Garden, and more.

Construction began on our six new pickleball courts this past September. Even more exciting is the fact that the brand new facility includes more than just new courts. Plans show that there will also be convenient storage lockers for those that wish to safely store valuables during their workouts. What’s more, there will also be new men’s and women’s restrooms constructed at the facility. This will make wardrobe changes and bathroom breaks easy and accommodating for all players and members of Harbor Club.

Keep your fingers crossed that the weather cooperates. If that, and all else goes according to plan, the date of completion for the six new pickleball courts and surrounding facilities is estimated to be in November of this year. Once done, it will be a perfect addition to The Grove campus. It will also nicely complement our award-winning golf course, Clubhouse, Boathouse Marina, and other resort-style amenities.

Curious to learn more? We invite you to experience Harbor Club for yourself. Contact us today to schedule an exclusive tour of our Southern Living-Inspired Community. With all there is to see and do, plus our neighborhood full of wonderful friends, you’ll quickly see why we won the 2018 Bliss Award for “Best Georgia Community of the Year.”

The Health Benefits of Pickleball

pickleball-harborclub.jpg

It’s no secret that one of the best ways to boost your health is through consistent exercise. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be hard. Even moderate physical activity done on a regular basis will create marked improvements in your health and well-being. There are tons of ways to get a good workout–especially at our Grove campus–but one worth pondering is the game of pickleball.

pickleball

What is pickleball, you ask? Believe it or not, it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the US. It has aspects of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong all rolled into one super-fun, easy-to-learn court sport. Not only is it enjoyable to play, but there are also a number of health benefits to gain from regular play. These include:

Physical benefits

People of all ages, young and old, find pickleball favorable from a physical standpoint. Why? One, the speed of the ball is slower than the speed of a tennis ball, making it easier for both young and old bodies to react; two, the sport is played on a smaller court than tennis which makes it more gentle on your body. You’ll burn calories, yet experience fewer injuries since it is a low-impact sport. What’s more, it can improve your balance, agility, and hand-eye coordination. All three are a bonus for those looking to enhance their golf game.

Psychological benefits

Here’s a huge perk: Pickleball can help boost your mood. A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology in 2017 found that the more deeply involved players were in the sport, the more likely they were to have a positive outlook on both aging and their overall lives. Routinely playing pickleball will also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression — which is ideal for anyone, no matter how old (or young) you are.

Social benefits

Anywhere you play pickleball you’ll create some great friendships, because it’s a social sport. Playing pickleball regularly with a group of people increases not only feelings of connectedness but emotional support too. What’s more, consistently engaging in fun, physical activity with friends increases the chances that you’ll continue that activity into the future. The consistency is key, and that feeling of camaraderie can help make it happen.

Pickleball is a cinch to learn and loads of fun to play, which makes it easy for players of all ages and skill levels. Harbor Club has multiple pickleball courts, with plans to build more in the future. Currently, our members play co-ed doubles on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday at 9am; women play on Wednesdays at 9am; and men play on Thursdays at 9am. We’d love for you to stop by and check out our facilities and everything else that Harbor Club has to offer. Start planning your visit today.

Step 4

Sprinkle remaining 3/4 cup toasted pecans over bottom of crust; drizzle caramel topping over pecans.

Step 5

Whisk together sweetened condensed milk and next 3 ingredients. Gently pour into prepared crust.

Step 6

Get Fit for Spring Golf Season With These Tips

courtney-prather-253894.jpg

Spring is right around the corner, and with that comes great weather for playing golf. If you hunkered down indoors too much this past winter you may not feel quite ready for the upcoming golf season. But that’s ok — we’ve put together beneficial tips that will help you get fit in time for golfing this spring.

Stretch your hips

Having the ability to swing your hips with ease is essential for a good golf swing. Try stretching your hips at least once a day. Here’s an effective stretch to try: Lie on your back on the floor and bring your knee to your chest while the other leg remains flatly extended. Gently move the flexed knee from side to side for about 30 seconds, then switch legs to do the same stretch on the other side. Done daily, you’ll quickly feel the positive effects of this easy stretch routine.

Always be swinging

Whether the weather is amenable or not, you can always find a place to practice your golf swing. If you plan on practicing it inside, do so safely with a large buffer of space above and around you. When you feel comfortable, try a weighted club for your practice swings. Gradually work your way up to a goal of a 100 swings a day. This exercise not only helps you practice for the real deal, but it also helps to improve your flexibility too.

Strengthen your core

Having strong core muscles is imperative for increasing your stability — and we all know that good stability is vital for an excellent golf swing. The bonus? The stronger your core, the less likely you’ll develop lower back pain. Yoga offers a unique way to improve your core strength as well as provide several other benefits, such as better balance and enhanced focus. (Note that we offer yoga classes for both men and ladies at Harbor Club.)

Walk the walk

The colder winter months often equate to more time sitting rather than getting up and moving. Sitting for too long can quickly lead to hip and back problems — both of which are golf-swing killers. Do yourself a favor and start walking more. If you have a fitness tracker, turn on the reminders to get up and walk. Park farther away from building entrances. Or simply hop on a treadmill at the Fitness Center down at The Grove. All of your extra efforts will add up to more energy in your swing and endurance on the course.

Drink up

Water that is. You already know that there are tons of benefits from increased water intake. It prevents cramps and sprains, flushes out toxins, and promotes weight loss. More importantly, the more water you drink, the more hydrated your muscles will be. That alone will improve your muscle function on the course — helping to both optimize and maximize your performance.

Spring is right around the corner, so give these tips a try and book a tee time to put them to the test. We think you’ll love the results …and playing on our award-winning golf course too. Book your tee time today.

4 Big Lifestyle Factors That Affect Your Well-being

golf-at-harbor-club.jpg

Have you ever really thought about the term “lifestyle”? It’s a word that defines how we live. It’s made up of how we make our homes, raise our kids, earn a living, and manage our health. As you can imagine, each element of our lifestyles can influence our overall well-being. So if you want to feel great, it’s important to create a happy and healthy lifestyle that supports that. Here are some tips on how to make it happen:

Nature

No matter your age or background, exploring nature is pleasing. Nature relaxes the mind and reduces stress and anxiety. Living near or having easy access to beautiful natural environments is a key to better well-being. It improves mental health and reduces the risk of depression. In fact, according to a recent Stanford study, “…city dwellers have a 20 percent higher risk of anxiety disorders and a 40 percent higher risk of mood disorders as compared to people in rural areas.”

Harbor Club remedies: Walk through our hiking trails, go for a boat ride on Lake Oconee, go bird-watching, or play a round of golf.

Exercise

Getting enough exercise is a critical aspect of well-being. Aside from the obvious physical benefits, it also helps improve mental clarity, sleep behaviors, self-esteem, memory, and immunity against illnesses. Getting enough moderate cardio and strength-training exercise is a powerful tool for feeling great. Moderate does not mean you have to experience pain and suffering. It means that you breathe a little heavier than normal and that you’re warm but not overly sweaty. If you make exercise fun, you’ll enjoy it more and will certainly reap its many benefits.

Harbor Club remedies: Utilize the strength and cardio equipment at the new gym in The Grove, play pickleball, take a yoga class, take a Zumba class, play golf, jog on our new quarter-mile track, or go through our new Fit-Trail® with 10 fitness stations for stretching, bending and strength training.

Socialization

Isolation can put a significant strain on emotional well-being. To be happy and healthy, it is important to have positive social relationships with friends, family, and neighbors. Engaging in social interaction improves confidence and provides people with a sense of belonging. These factors can add years to your lifespan, so avoid dismissing opportunities to engage with others. Whether it’s sharing a meal or dancing the night away, you’ll be glad you went out and had fun with others.

Harbor Club remedies: Dinners, dances, and parties at the Clubhouse and Boathouse, Girls Night Out, Men’s Coffee and Conversation, Meet & Greet events, Trivia nights, live concerts at the Boathouse and Clubhouse and hanging out at the new dog parks at The Grove.

Hobbies

Enjoying hobbies can have a major impact on improving your physical and psychological well-being. It’s especially true for those hobbies that require rhythmic or repetitive activities since they induce a relaxation response in your brain. Hobbies keep your brain engaged and are an excellent creativity outlet, not to mention a stress reliever. No wonder adult coloring books are so popular!

Harbor Club remedies: Gardening at the new Victory Garden; fishing on Lake Oconee, the new Sanctuary Pond or various other stocked fishing ponds on our grounds; playing a round of golf, kayaking or paddle boarding on Lake Oconee; painting at a “Sips & Strokes” event; or biking on the 27 miles of well-maintained roads within our secure community.

Experiencing resort-style living gives families a better way to balance both work and play. That balance leads to a healthy and rewarding lifestyle that’s tough to beat. Make plans to visit Harbor Club on Lake Oconee to learn how living the Harbor Club Life can boost your well-being today!

Stay Fit Over the Holidays with These Easy Tips

get-fit.jpg

We’ve all done it. By the time New Year’s Day rolls around, our overindulgence in holiday goodies has us making crazy-aggressive resolutions to get fit and lose weight. We then ditch those resolutions because what’s required to hit those ridiculous goals is simply not sustainable. But please don’t beat yourself up! There are better, easier ways to stay fit during the holiday season. You already know you need to eat right and exercise, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat only celery sticks and run 10 miles a day. Small and consistent daily efforts will keep your health in check.

Exercise

Starting right now, do some form of exercise every day. Ideally, you’ll want to do a mix of cardio and weight training to get the best results, but just making an extra effort to move and get your blood pumping is your daily goal. There are so many choices when it comes to exercise, so do what you enjoy most–even if it’s a simple walk. You can increase your stamina and heart health by simply turning your 20 minute walk into 30 minutes, then 40, and so on. The key is to do it daily. Soon, you may find that you’ll have enough stamina to jog a little bit during your walks. Mix it up and do some other fun cardio exercises, too. And if you include an exercise buddy, it will help keep you both accountable.

Other good ideas for cardio include:

  • Zumba
If you enjoy dancing, then you’ll love Zumba classes. It is a super fun way to get a great workout. (Harbor Club currently offers Zumba classes on Tuesdays, so take advantage of those!)
  • Golf
We are so lucky to have such a fantastic golf course at our disposal. If you do a lot of walking while playing, then you are getting in some great cardio. The bonus? Swinging that golf club will help you get in some strength-training too.
  • Walk/Jog/Run/Hike
Inside or out, we’ve got you covered if you want to get some steps in. We’ve got state-of-the-art treadmills in our new fitness center, as well as a new ¼-mile track and a one-mile hiking trail at our new Grove amenity center.
  • Bike
We have 27 miles of well-maintained roads in our community, so grab your bike and get pedaling.
  • Tennis
Playing tennis is an excellent cardio workout. If you’ve never played before, we offer clinics to help you get started.
  • Pickleball
This fast-growing sport offers much of the same cardiovascular benefits of tennis. We have three pickleball courts and offer group play on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Ideas for strength-training include:

  • Yoga
Yoga is a wonderful weight-bearing exercise that can help strengthen and lengthen your muscles. It’s an awesome way to condition your body in a gentle way. (We offer separate yoga classes for both men and women, so feel free to join in!)
  • Weight machines
Our new fitness facility at The Grove offers state-of-the-art strength training equipment and free weights to help you pump that iron. Those who want to bulk up should aim for heavier weights and less reps. Those who want to simply tone their muscles should aim for less weight and more reps.
  • Fitness stations – The Grove also has a groomed trail with fitness stations installed. As you make your way through the ¼-mile loop, stop and try each one to get some strength training in with your cardio.

Tips for eating right

With so many delicious goodies at hand, we know it’s very challenging to keep your calories in check during the holiday season, but here are a few tips to avoid going overboard:

  • Before heading out to a party, eat a healthy snack. By the time you get to your destination, you’ll feel less hungry and will consume less as a result.
  • Drink eight glasses of water a day.
  • Try to limit your alcohol intake to one drink a day.
  • Instead of having an extra cup of coffee, switch to a cup of tea instead (sans cream and sugar, of course.)
  • Don’t feel compelled to finish an entire dessert. Sometimes just a few bites will do.
  • Listen to your body and stop eating as soon as you begin to feel full.
  • Bring healthy dishes to potluck dinners.
  • Going to a buffet? Don’t overdo it. Take advantage of the soup and salad first, and then go back for small servings of your high-calorie favorites. You’ll be surprised at how satisfied you can be with smaller portions after eating healthier foods first.
  • Watch your sugar intake — it’s in everything

So start today! Make these small efforts to eat right and enjoy all the great fitness facilities that Harbor Club has to offer, and do it every single day. Come New Year ’s Day, you’ll be glad you did.
