Harbor Club at Lake Oconee A Luxury Southern Charm Getaway

A Lifestyle Built Around Golf and Lake Life

Harbor Club, on the shores of Georgia’s second-largest lake, Lake Oconee has grown into more than just a golf community. With its championship course, newly reimagined recreation campus, award-winning marina, and family-owned legacy, Harbor Club has become a destination where lake living, sport and southern charm all come together.

A Champion Golf Course with Character

Harbor Club’s 18-hole course, designed in 1991 by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, is consistently ranked among Georgia’s best. Routed through wooded hillsides and along Lake Oconee, it touches the water six times and offers both variety and pace of play. Signature holes include two drivable par-fours, most notably the 7th, and a par-three on the 17th hole that was inspired by Augusta National’s 12th. Although Harbor Club is a 1,000-acre, private gated community, the golf course is open daily to limited outside play. The course is particularly popular in April with golfers traveling to and from the Masters Tournament in Augusta, just an hour east of Greensboro. With rare bent grass greens and pristine conditioning, Harbor Club continues to earn top tier recognition.

The Boathouse: Lake Living at Its Best

The Boathouse Marina, winner of the Aurora Award for Best Recreational Facility in the Southeast, is central to Harbor Club’s lake lifestyle. The marina offers year-round launching, fueling, and off-season storage, while summer brings live music, dining, and gatherings on the Grand Lawn. Located on Lake Oconee’s clear Richland Creek, it’s just a short boat ride from the Ritz-Carlton Lodge.

The Grove

The Grove, Harbor Club’s new 2-acre amenity campus, offers a 2,000-square-foot fitness center, yoga studio, hiking trail with fitness stations and Sanctuary Pond for fishing and relaxation. A sports field and renovated grandstand host concerts and events, while The Stables, once an equestrian barn, has been transformed into a premier wedding venue with a cedar outdoor chapel. “The Grove provides residents and members with a vibrant amenity and the perfect complement to our golf course, marina, clubhouse, and swim and tennis center,” says GM Brandon Matney.

Luxury Dining on the Course

Harbor Club’s hilltop clubhouse restaurant overlooks the golf course and croquet lawn, serving lunch, dinner, and a beloved Sunday brunch. Signature cocktails like the Cadillac Peachrita and Tee-Off Transfusion have made the bar a favorite among locals and guests alike.

Where Golf, Lake and Lifestyle Meet

Just an hour east of Atlanta, Harbor Club offers a rare mix of recreation and community. Whether you’re chasing birdies on the 7th hole, attending a wedding at The Stables, storing your boat at The Boathouse, or enjoying brunch with a lake view, Harbor Club delivers a lifestyle rooted in both tradition and innovation.

Harbor Club Is… Home.

At Harbor Club, we believe our community is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a feeling, a lifestyle, and a collection of special moments that bring people together. That’s why we launched “Harbor Club Is…” by asking residents and members to share what Harbor Club means to them.

One of the first families to share was Brian Volz and his wife Taylor. As new parents, Harbor Club holds an especially meaningful place in their lives.

Brian shared:

“Harbor Club is Home. It’s where we brought our little girl home from the hospital, it’s where she will play, where she will grow up. This neighborhood is her home but more importantly, the people of Harbor Club are her extended family. We love it here and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

The first picture is outside our front door before her first family golf outing. The second is our family picture at her first Easter. The third is her and I enjoying some much needed lake time. The fourth is a picture of my wife Taylor and our baby girl on a family walk with the dog through the neighborhood. And the 5th is us enjoying a walk through 9 holes on the best golf course on the lake.”

Stories like this remind us of what makes Harbor Club truly special. Every sunset on the lake, every round of golf, every quiet morning on the porch becomes part of the bigger story of our community.

Now, we’d love to hear from you. What does Harbor Club mean to you? Share your photos, stories, and favorite moments with us for a chance to be featured on our website, social media, and newsletters.

Together, let’s celebrate the heart of Harbor Club.

Harbor Club: The “Slow & Steady” Star of Lake Oconee’s Real Estate Market
At Harbor Club, success isn’t a trend—it’s a track record. This 1,100-acre gated community on Lake Oconee’s north shore continues to shine with steady home appreciation, strong sales, and a lifestyle that blends relaxed luxury with long-term value.
With nine miles of lake frontage, resort-style amenities, and a championship golf course,
Harbor Club has become one of the area’s most rewarding investments. Since 2021, average home prices around the lake have climbed more than 20%, but Harbor Club’s growth has been stable, consistent, and resilient.
Recent real estate performance says it all:
• $69.3M in sales (2022)
• $50M+ in 101 transactions (2023)
• $71.1M in 171 transactions (2024)
• $33.4M pending/closed as of June 2025

Behind these numbers? A smart, phased development strategy, a broad range of home offerings from the $300s to $3M+, and a community built with lasting appeal. From new construction to resale properties, buyers continue to find exceptional value and long-term potential in every price range.
In a market defined by demand and limited supply, Harbor Club continues to deliver something rare: confidence…

Thinking About Selling Solo? Here’s What FSBO Won’t Tell You – But A Pro Will!

We get it—selling your home on your own may seem like a way to save money. But in reality, FSBO (For Sale by Owner) listings often face challenges that can delay or reduce your final sale price. Some common pitfalls include:
• Overpricing or underpricing: Without current market data, it’s easy to miss the mark. Overpricing can scare away buyers, while underpricing leaves money on the table.
• Limited exposure: FSBO homes aren’t listed on the MLS or shared across Realtor networks, which drastically reduces visibility and buyer interest.
• Unpolished presentation: Professional staging and photography can make a major difference. FSBO listings often lack that polished look that helps homes stand out.
• Legal and paperwork errors: Real estate transactions involve contracts, disclosures, inspections, and deadlines. A single mistake can derail the deal.
• Tough negotiations: Without an experienced advocate, sellers may struggle to handle offers, repairs, or price concessions confidently.

July Gardening in Georgia: What’s Blooming & What to Plant for Fall

Summer in Georgia brings long, sun-drenched days—and if you’ve spent any time outdoors in Georgia’s Lake Country lately, you’ve likely noticed the bursts of color, fragrance, and life blooming in gardens across the community. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just looking to add curb appeal to your home, July is a pivotal time in the community garden or at home in your own yard. Here’s what’s flourishing now and what you can plant to ensure a gorgeous and productive garden come fall.

What’s Blooming in Georgia Gardens Right Now

July is peak bloom season in the South. Here’s what you’ll see thriving around Lake Oconee:

  1. Crepe Myrtles
A Southern staple, these vibrant trees explode in shades of pink, purple, red, and white this time of year. They’re heat-tolerant, low-maintenance, and add height and drama to any landscape.
  2. Coneflowers (Echinacea)
These pollinator-friendly perennials are not only beautiful but also tough. They thrive in Georgia heat and attract butterflies and bees alike.
  3. Black-Eyed Susans
Bright and cheerful, these yellow-petaled flowers are resilient in hot, dry weather and bloom throughout the summer.
  4. Zinnias & Marigolds
These colorful annuals love the heat and bloom in bold shades all season long, making them ideal for flower beds or container gardens.
  5. Gardenias & Hydrangeas
Gardenias offer their iconic fragrance, while hydrangeas continue to impress with their large, lush blooms, especially in shaded spots.

What to Plant Now for a Beautiful Fall Garden

Even though it’s hot outside, now is the perfect time to start planning and planting for fall. With the right choices, your yard or section in the community garden can stay colorful and vibrant well into October and November.

  1. Fall Annuals to Start from Seed or Transplant in August
  • Pansies & Violas – Add cool-season color; start seeds indoors in July for planting in late August.
  • Snapdragons – Tall and colorful, they add height to fall beds and love cooler temps.
  • Ornamental Kale & Cabbage – Perfect for texture and color in fall planters and beds.
  1. Vegetables to Plant in Late July & August
  • Collards, Kale, Mustard Greens – Thrive in the cooler temps of late summer into fall.
  • Beets & Carrots – Sow seeds now for a fall harvest.
  • Lettuce & Spinach – Quick growers that can be succession planted into September.
  1. Perennials & Shrubs to Install Now
July is also a great time to plant native perennials or add structural shrubs like:
  • Russian Sage
  • Coreopsis
  • Boxwood or Dwarf Holly
Just be sure to water well as they establish in the summer heat.

Gardening Tips for Lake Oconee’s Climate

  • Water wisely: Water early in the morning, deeply and less frequently, to encourage strong root growth.
  • Mulch generously: Mulch not only keeps weeds at bay but also helps retain moisture during the hottest months.
  • Watch for pests: Heat and humidity can invite insects—inspect leaves regularly and use natural deterrents when possible.
  • Feed summer bloomers: A mid-season fertilizer boost can prolong blooms on annuals and flowering perennials.

Bringing Beauty to Your Backyard (and Beyond)

Whether you’re maintaining a full landscape, keeping a few container gardens on the porch, or getting your hands dirty in the Community Garden at The Grove, July is a rewarding time to get your hands in the dirt. Here at Harbor Club, the beauty of the lake is only enhanced by the vibrant gardens that surround it. With a little planning now, you can keep your landscape blooming well into fall—and enjoy the Southern outdoor lifestyle all season long.

Stars, Stripes, and Smiles: Harbor Club’s 4th of July Celebration Shines Bright

There’s nothing quite like celebrating the 4th of July at Harbor Club — and this year’s festivities were a true showcase of community spirit, patriotic pride, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

The weekend kicked off on Friday morning with a moving flag-raising ceremony in front of the Clubhouse, led by Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and local firefighter Bob Welsh. As the American flag rose high and proud against the summer sky, residents and guests gathered in reverent silence before the day’s excitement truly began.

Not long after, the hum of engines and honking of horns signaled the start of one of Harbor Club’s most beloved traditions — the annual patriotic golf cart parade. Lined up behind the Walker Church Fire Department’s firetruck, a record number of colorfully decorated carts rolled out, festooned in red, white, and blue. Children waved flags and neighbors cheered from lawns and sidewalks, while others followed along on foot to be part of the excitement. From streamers and star-spangled banners to full-on themed displays, each cart brought its own flair to the fun.

The energy continued at the Harbor Club pool, where DJ Dean kept the crowd moving with festive tunes. The grill was fired up for burgers, hot dogs, and all the classic summer favorites. With cold drinks in hand and smiles all around, neighbors relaxed poolside and soaked in the sunshine.

This year marked the 15th annual 4th of July celebration at Harbor Club, and it was the biggest one yet. With record attendance and more carts than ever, it was a clear sign that the spirit of community is alive and thriving.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day so special, and to Leigh Lofgren for capturing the magic through her photos. Here’s to many more celebrations and the beautiful tradition of coming together as a community to celebrate the land we love.

Harbor Club: The “Slow & Steady” Star of Lake Oconee’s Real Estate Market

Harbor Club has built something more enduring than of-the-moment flash: steady growth, consistent sales, and a lifestyle that delivers both joy and long-term value.

The 1,100-acre gated community on Lake Oconee’s north shore has quietly become one of the area’s most resilient and rewarding investments. With nine miles of lake frontage, an 18-hole championship golf course, and a suite of resort-style amenities, Harbor Club blends relaxed luxury with financial peace of mind.

Since 2021, average home prices around Lake Oconee have risen more than 20%. But while some neighboring communities have seen price swings and extended days on market, Harbor Club has held its ground with steady appreciation and consistent sales velocity. For buyers seeking more than just short-term appreciation, Harbor Club offers something rare: confidence. Whether as a primary residence, weekend escape, or investment property, homeowners enjoy the assurance that comes from a track record of performance, a balanced market position, and a vibrant community. Real estate sales over the past few years tell a clear story:

– Harbor Club had $69.3 million in sales in 2022

– Nearly $50 million in sales across 101 transactions in 2023

– $71.1 million in sales in 2024, comprised of 171 transactions (107 residential and 64 homesites)

– There are 39 pending and closed transactions totaling $33.4 million as of June 2025

Behind these numbers is a strategy of thoughtful, phased development. By releasing new homesites in measured waves and preserving inventory, Harbor Club has avoided the boom-and-bust cycles seen elsewhere. Today, the developer is nearing the end of its remaining lots, adding a layer of scarcity that continues to drive demand.

Part of Harbor Club’s appeal is its range of real estate offerings. New builds and resales start in the high $300,000s, while custom lakefront estates exceed $3 million. My Home Communities is currently delivering 36 single-family homes priced from the low $400,000s—making Harbor Club accessible to first-time buyers and empty nesters wanting to downsize, while still appealing to the most affluent lake and golf buyers. This diverse pricing structure ensures a broader market base and helps the community weather market shifts with ease.

“The community’s considerable appeal at the lake is driven by its sense of relaxed luxury, broad range of amenities and club activities, plus a wide range of home types and prices ranging from the $300’s to over $3 million,” says Kathy Phillips, Director of Real Estate at Harbor Club, and also a longtime Harbor Club resident.

Harbor Club’s value proposition isn’t just about price—it’s about how the community was built to last. Several key factors have contributed to its long-term strength:

– Master-planned from the start: With a mix of homes, gathering spaces, dining options, award-winning golf, racquet sports, and a wide range of amenities, Harbor Club offers more than just homes—it delivers a well-rounded lifestyle. Residents enjoy access to The Grove, a 12-acre wellness and recreation complex featuring a fitness center, Fit-Trails®, running track, event field, dog parks, community garden, and pond. The community also includes a Southern-style Clubhouse with a pro shop, restaurant, locker rooms, and meeting spaces, a member pool, a family-friendly playground, and a full-service Marina for boat storage and assistance.

– Controlled inventory release: A phased approach to development has kept supply in check and demand high.

– Preservation of character: By protecting natural spaces and limiting overdevelopment, the community has maintained its charm and appeal.

– Market responsiveness: Harbor Club’s leadership team adapts to buyer trends, supporting everything from speculative builds to custom homes.

– Financial strength: The Harbor Club Master Property Owners Association enjoys surplus funds, underscoring the community’s solid financial foundation.

The Bottom Line:  In a region known for high demand and low inventory, Harbor Club stands out for all the right reasons. With proven appreciation, financial stability, and a well-rounded lifestyle offering, Harbor Club remains the steady standout of the Lake Oconee market.

Memorial Day at Harbor Club is always a special occasion, and this year’s Member Pool Party was the perfect mix of fun, food, and heartfelt meaning. Even with a few surprise showers in the forecast, the rain couldn’t dampen the energy, or the smiles, around the pool as members came together to kick off summer in style.

It was the kind of afternoon that reminded us why summer at Harbor Club is so special, a full day of fun, food, and music. DJ Cayce Buttrey kept the good vibes going with an upbeat mix of summer favorites, while our culinary team fired up the grill to serve classic poolside fare, burgers, hot dogs, and more. Members gathered under umbrellas, making the most of the day with laughter, great conversation, and refreshing drinks.

But beyond the food and festivities, the heart of the event was a shared moment of reflection. We paused together to honor the true meaning of Memorial Day, remembering the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is never forgotten, and it was meaningful to come together as a community to pay tribute.

Easter Fun at The Stables

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who joined us for this year’s Family Easter Event at The Stables! With more than 300 children, parents, and grandparents in attendance, it was a joyful day brimming with laughter, sunshine, and seasonal celebration.

The festivities began with age-grouped egg hunts, sending eager little ones racing across the field in search of brightly colored treasures. Their delighted squeals filled the air, creating a soundtrack of pure happiness that echoed throughout the spring-kissed landscape.

Children burned off their sugar highs on the giant inflatable slide and obstacle course, while whimsical face painting and balloon art brought an extra splash of color to the day. A special shout-out to Pegz Fazio of Phantom Face Paint and her talented partner, Phil Alexander, whose incredible artistry kept smiles bright from morning to afternoon.

No Easter event is complete without sweet treats, and this one certainly delivered! Families enjoyed freshly popped popcorn, snow cones, cupcakes, and cookies—many of them served by our youngest volunteers, who enthusiastically ran the popcorn and snow-cone machines and bubble table like seasoned pros.

One of the most magical moments of the day? A visit from the Easter Bunny, of course! Children lined up for photos with their fluffy guest, thrilled to capture the memory amidst a backdrop of festive balloons. Rumor has it there’s a familiar face beneath those long ears—next time you’re dining at the Clubhouse, keep an eye out for Brandon the cook!

This unforgettable day was made possible by the generous support and hard work of so many. We extend our deepest thanks to Brandon Matney and Harbor Club for their generous sponsorship, and to Don C. and Michelle McCracken for organizing supplies and setting the perfect tone with upbeat, festive music.

Most of all, we’re grateful to our incredible event organizer, Kathy Weyer, whose vision and leadership brought this event to life. A big thank-you as well to her team of dedicated volunteers: Chris and Irene Caulfield, Michael and Sherry Pessers, Randy and Lisa Stevens, and Kathy’s own family. Your passion and hard work created a magical experience for everyone involved.

The Latest Home Trends: Elevate Your Harbor Club Home in 2025

2025 home trendsAs home design continues to evolve, 2025 is bringing a mix of timeless elegance and modern innovation. Whether you’re looking to refresh your space or planning a full-scale renovation, staying on top of the latest trends can help you create a home that’s both stylish and functional while boosting value. Here are some of the top home trends shaping interiors this year—perfect for enhancing your Harbor Club residence.

  1. Natural Elements & Organic Textures

Bringing the outdoors in is a major theme for 2025. Homeowners are incorporating raw materials like stone, wood, and rattan to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Think oak cabinetry, slate backsplashes, and linen upholstery—all designed to create a relaxed, nature-inspired aesthetic that pairs perfectly with Lake Oconee.

  1. Warm, Earthy Color Palettes

While neutrals remain popular, rich, earthy tones are making waves. Shades like terracotta, deep greens, and warm browns such as Pantone’s color of the year – Mocha Mousse – add depth and coziness, perfect for accent walls, furniture, or décor. Soft whites and creamy beiges also continue to dominate for a timeless, airy feel.

  1. Statement Lighting as Art

Lighting is no longer just functional—it’s a focal point. Oversized pendants, sculptural chandeliers, and vintage-inspired sconces are adding drama and personality to homes. In open-concept spaces, layered lighting helps create a cozy ambiance. New accessories like battery-powered scones and other upscale lighting ditch the cords for a streamlined aesthetic.

  1. Spa-Like Bathrooms

The bathroom is becoming more than just a necessity—it’s a retreat. Features like freestanding tubs, rainfall showers, and warm, textured tiles are creating a spa-like experience. Many homeowners are also incorporating smart technology, such as heated floors and ambient lighting, for a touch of luxury.

  1. Multi-Functional Spaces

Since 2020, there chas been an influx of people from Atlanta and other cities to Lake Oconee , as working from home has become the new norm. With more people working remotely, homes are adapting to provide flexible living. Stylish home offices, reading nooks, and hidden storage solutions are helping maximize space without compromising aesthetics. Custom built-ins and dual-purpose furniture make it easy to transition between work and leisure.

  1. Outdoor Living Expansions

At Harbor Club, lakeside living is a way of life—so it’s no surprise that outdoor spaces are a major design focus. Expanding patios, adding pergolas, and incorporating fire pits or outdoor kitchens are great ways to create year-round entertaining areas. Comfortable, weather-resistant furniture and layered lighting can make your backyard feel like an extension of your home. A popular pool feature is the infinity-edge pool, which creates the illusion of seamlessly merging with the stunning waters of Lake Oconee.

  1. Smart Home Integration

Technology continues to streamline daily life, with smart home automation becoming increasingly common. Voice-activated assistants, security systems, and energy-efficient smart thermostats are making homes more convenient, secure, and sustainable.

  1. Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

Eco-conscious design is on the rise, with homeowners seeking energy-efficient solutions like solar panels, LED lighting, and high-performance windows. Sustainable materials such as bamboo flooring and recycled glass countertops are also gaining popularity, offering both style and environmental benefits.

  1. Vintage & Timeless Design Mixes

Blending vintage charm with contemporary elements is a trend that continues to grow. Heirloom furniture, antique-inspired fixtures, and classic design elements like wainscoting or arched doorways create a home with character and warmth.

  1. Bold Kitchens with Personality

All-white kitchens are taking a backseat to bolder, more personalized designs. Darker hues, mixed materials, and statement backsplashes are bringing more warmth and uniqueness to the heart of the home. Open shelving, custom range hoods, and textured cabinetry are also making waves at the lake.

Bringing the Latest Trends to Your Harbor Club Home

Whether you’re making small updates or planning a full renovation, these home trends can help you create a space that reflects your style while staying ahead of the curve. At Harbor Club, homes are more than just where you live—they’re a natural extension of the beautiful lakefront, golf, and vibrant social lifestyle, offering warmth, comfort, and a true sense of belonging. Top 10 Georgia Courses You Can Play

As seen in LINKS Magazine By Joe Passov

Golf Course at Lake Oconee at Harbor Club

Unfortunately for visiting golfers to Georgia, the host venue of the Tour Championship—East Lake Golf Club—is private, as are former Tour stops Atlanta Country Club, TPC Sugarloaf, and multiple-major-championship-host Atlanta Athletic Club. However, Atlanta and the rest of the Peach State boast a multitude of superb public-access layouts. Here are the 10 best courses you can play in Georgia.

Harbor ClubGreensboro

Don’t sleep on the Harbor Club. Its near neighbors may attract most of the limelight, but this 1991 Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish design easily earns its top-10 stripes thanks to its low-profile, 7,000-yard journey through wooded, lakeside terrain. The routing encompasses four creeks, several ponds, and encounters Lake Oconee on six occasions, notably at the 182-yard par-three 17th. The drivable 341-yard par-four 7th that skirts the lake is one of the region’s most exciting risk/reward holes.

A Heartwarming Success: “Pets with Santa” Event Benefits Oconee Regional Humane Society

This year’s “Pets with Santa” event was a memorable celebration of community, compassion, and holiday spirit. With 32 families and over 50 pets in attendance, the event raised more than $1,000 to support the mission of the Oconee Regional Humane Society, helping fund their ongoing efforts to care for animals in need.

The day was filled with festive cheer as pet owners and their furry friends posed for photos with Santa, many dressed in adorable holiday outfits. Leigh Lofgren, the event’s photographer, skillfully captured each heartwarming moment, ensuring every family left with a cherished holiday memory.

A special thank you to Santa for bringing his jolly spirit and making this event even more magical. He was a true hit with the pets and their owners, patiently posing with every furry friend and ensuring each photo was picture-perfect!

What made the event even more special was its impact on the Oconee Regional Humane Society. The funds raised will directly support the organization’s vital work of rescuing, sheltering, and caring for animals in our local community. This year’s success was a beautiful reminder of how coming together can make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the event possible—from the volunteers who managed check-ins and kept everything running smoothly to the generous pet owners who participated and supported the cause. This event was a true reflection of the power of community.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Harbor Club resident and professional photographer Leigh Lofgren, not only for organizing such a fun and festive event but also for generously donating her time and photography expertise to ensure each pet had a picture-perfect moment with Santa.

We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who contributed to this year’s event’s success, and we can’t wait to see you all next year for another round of holiday magic with Pets with Santa!

What one lakeside Georgia golf course meant to a New York Yankees legend

As published on GolfPass on October 23, 2024:

Hall-of-Famer Mickey Mantle spent his last years at the Harbor Club at Lake Oconee, a highly-rated and publicly-accessible Georgia gem.

Mickey Mantle golfs at Harbor Club

You never know what sort of unexpected wonders a new golf course can help unlock.

I flew up to play some golf at the sprawling Reynolds Lake Oconee resort and community, but first, I planned a visit to play the Harbor Club on Lake Oconee, a semi-private golf course and residential community that helped establish the 19,000-acre lake and its shores as prime vacation territory about 80 minutes east of Atlanta.

By accident, my timing was impeccable.

Less than 72 hours after the New York Yankees had eliminated the Cleveland Guardians from the Major League Baseball playoffs and advanced to the 2024 World Series for another showdown with their rival Los Angeles Dodgers, I found myself at a place near and dear to one of the Bronx’s all-time bombers.

New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle bashed 536 home runs in his career in pinstripes, including a record 18 in his World Series career. After retiring in 1968, he took to golf. Although pitchers tend make the best golfers – see John Smoltz, Mark Mulder and more – it makes perfect sense that golf attracts gifted hitters as well. The sound of a flushed golf shot and the satisfying crack of the baseball bat are cousins, and the competitive possibilities in golf no doubt held considerable appeal to Mantle. He spent significant parts of his sunset years living in a lakeside villa at the Harbor Club, where he wowed fellow golfers with his naturaly hand-eye coordination. He could hit a ball just as hard left-handed as right-handed.

But it isn’t Mantle’s name you see on a street sign just around the bend from the clubhouse. It belongs to his son, Billy, who died of a heart attack at just 36 years old, days after his father had emerged from a life-changing stint in alcohol rehabilitation at California’s Betty Ford Clinic. This tragic turn led to one of the most frank and deeply personal athlete interviews ever televised: a 15-minute conversation between Mantle and broadcaster Bob Costas in March of 1994. Seventeen months later, Costas would give the eulogy at Mantle’s funeral.

Despite his considerable generosity – he once paid for repairs to the Harbor Club gatehouse after a workman accidentally damaged the building with his truck – Mantle was hard on himself, plagued by frustrations at not having gotten as much out of his prodigious baseball talent as he thought he should have. In the Costas interview, he admits, bluntly, that he also fell well short as a father.

Though the stakes are lower, lifelong golfers know the relentless frustrations borne out of high expectations. Why do I keep losing my tee shots to the right? Why did I just three-putt from 15 feet? Success, however one measures it, is perpetually elusive; it’s easy to be crushed by the weight of oversized expectations. A golfer moaning and complaining on a beautiful golf course on a gorgeous day is a pitiful sight.

Perhaps golf’s tribulations helped Mickey Mantle gain some perspective and give himself some grace. In his interview with Costas, conducted on camous at the Harbor Club, Mantle acknowledged that the flood of well-wishes he received while he was at the Betty Ford clinic for alcohol rehabilitation helped him realize – years late – the affection he engendered in baseball fans. Perhaps that gratitude, however delayed, helped him heal.

And perhaps that gratitude extended to his home golf course, a beautiful hidden gem of sorts, hiding at the northern tip of Lake Oconee. The 7,027-yard Harbor Club course opened in 1991, laid out by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish on splendidly hilly lakeside property that is part of a 1,000-acre development. The front nine starts with a friendly fastball down the middle in the form of a 390-yard, down-then-up straightaway par 4, followed by a nasty-curveball par-3 that stretches as long as 240 yards.

Weiskopf and Morrish change speeds relentlessly, aided by the terrain. The shortish but steadily uphill dogleg-right par-5 4th gives way to a long par 4 at the 5th hole, which snaps left around deep bunkers and dives downhill, offering the golfer’s first look at the lake. The back nine is more eclectic but of a similar feel, culminating in a terrific five-hole finish where the par 5 14th with a short-porch option is followed by a trademark Weiskopf drivable par 4: a blast and a bloop. The par-3 17th gives the best view down a finger of the lake, boats bobbing pleasantly away along both shores.

There’s a thread running through Mantle and one of the men who laid out the golf course he enjoyed. Despite winning the 1973 Open Championship, Weiskopf ultimately left his sport believing he had squandered his prodigious talent. As with Mantle, alcohol was the culprit. “Every bad mistake I made,” Weiskopf once told golf writer Jeff Rude, “related to alcohol.” Weiskopf rang in the 21st century by quitting drinking and remained sober the last 22 years of his life. It was a fertile period, full of noteworthy golf course designs including multiple PGA Tour stops.

One unusual aspect of the Harbor Club is that it is proudly semi-private, with no plans to stop offering public access despite a healthy and sizable membership. Ownership believes strongly in welcoming outside play while keeping the choicest times for members. Total rounds stay below 25,000 per year, largely because the club doesn’t promote itself heavily to non-members. It’s there for those who are willing to look for it. Peak rates climb past $200 in the high seasons and Masters Week is very busy. It is a welcoming place that lacks the golf-factory feel that several public and resort properties have started to exhibit post-pandemic. It’s charmingly quiet, unfussy and full of gratifying moments – a place to play worthy of its most famous former resident.

Harbor Club Rocks the Night with Double Take!

real estate director Kathy Phillips and friends at Harbor ClubWe’re still buzzing from the unforgettable night we had here at Harbor Club, where our community gathered for a night of live music, dancing, and giving back! The evening’s entertainment was none other than the crowd-favorite band Double Take, featuring two of our very own residents who recently purchased new construction homes with Harbor Club Real Estate. Talk about neighbors making an entrance!

With over 200 Harbor Club members and residents in attendance, it was truly an evening to remember. Local businesses added to the excitement with fantastic raffle prizes, and we’re thrilled to announce that our community raised an impressive $5,000 in support of Circle of Love, Inc.! Circle of Love Center Inc. is an emergency safe shelter and resource center for domestic violence victims and their children. Based in Greene County, they provide residential and non-residential services to five (5) counties: Greene, Morgan, Hancock, Putnam, and Baldwin Counties. Thanks to our wonderful community members, this generous donation will make a real difference in assisting with their expansion and renovation of the center.

This event was made possible thanks to the incredible support of our generous sponsors, Century Bank & Trust and Dell Law Firm. We are deeply grateful for their commitment and partnership, which helped bring this event to life! A huge shoutout to Harbor Club Real Estate and our fantastic team, especially Kathy Phillips and Brooke Adams, who went above and beyond to make the night a success. It’s moments like these that showcase the warmth and spirit of our Harbor Club family.

And what’s a Harbor Club event without delicious food? Local favorites, Dough Daddy Dough (a fellow Harbor Club resident) and Burger Barn, brought the flavor, serving up delicious bites that kept the crowd energized and ready for the dance floor. The dance floor was packed from the first note to the last, as members and residents showed off their moves, enjoying an unforgettable night of music and connection.

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and danced with us – it’s events like these that make Harbor Club such an amazing place to call home. Harbor Club Residents Host September 11th Remembrance Walk to Honor Lives Lost

9/11 remembrance walk

Over 50 residents of Harbor Club came together on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, for a special Remembrance Walk to honor the 2,977 lives lost during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The event was organized by Harbor Club resident and Greene County Firefighter, Bob Welsh, and took participants on a meaningful mile and a half journey that began at the Clubhouse cart barn and ended at the Harbor Club guard gate.

The walk, which commenced early in the morning, concluded at the gate house at 8:46 AM—the exact time the first plane struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower in 2001. Upon arrival, Welsh led the group in a moment of silence, paying respects to the fallen, while the American flag was lowered to half-mast.

Residents shared personal reflections on the significance of the walk. Harbor Club resident, Debbie Demco, emphasized the importance of continuing the tradition, stating, “Every year is a new year to remember. We have to keep remembering.” She also expressed hope that more residents would participate in future walks, underscoring the event’s value in fostering collective remembrance.

Roxanne Ryan, another participant, shared her thoughts on the communal nature of the walk, saying, “This is a great community event that brings people together. We have to remember that on some of the darkest days you have to hope and pray like today, that you get through it. Here we are, looking back 23 years, and we were strong enough to pull through it, not only as a community but as a nation.”

9/11 remembrance walk at Harbor ClubThe Remembrance Walk had a humble beginning in 2023, when Welsh walked the route alone, dressed in full turnout gear. This year, Welsh extended the invitation to his neighbors, fostering a larger community gathering. When asked why he decided to open the event to his fellow residents, Welsh responded, “In my lifetime, too many tragic events have happened, and people seem to forget. I was worried that we as a community were forgetting 9/11. I think opening the walk up to our community is a great thing. We get to remember the fallen and we also get to meet our neighbors.”

Welsh also took the opportunity to honor the 400 firefighters, police officers, and first responders who lost their lives in the attacks, noting, “I lost a dear firefighter friend just last week, and it has been difficult. When you think about the fact that over 400 first responders died when the towers came down… this is just a nice way to honor and remember all the lives lost that day. I hope we never forget it.”

The September 11th Remembrance Walk was a powerful tribute, highlighting the strength and unity of both the Harbor Club community and the nation in remembering one of the most tragic days in American history.

Gardening Corner: Summer Planting Guide – What to Plant Now for a Vibrant Fall Garden in Georgia

Now is the ideal time to plan ahead and ensure your garden stays vibrant and colorful throughout the fall. Unleash your green thumb in our Victory Garden, which welcomes members of all ages. Our garden features several professionally designed, raised beds that make growing plants and vegetables a breeze. Explore our guide to discover what you can plant now in Georgia for a breathtaking autumn display.

  1. Cool-Season Vegetables: Georgia’s mild fall climate is perfect for growing a variety of cool-season vegetables. Plant these now for a bountiful harvest in the fall:
  • Broccoli: Start seeds indoors or purchase young plants from a local nursery. Broccoli thrives in cooler weather and will produce heads ready for harvest in about 60-80 days.
  • Cabbage: Another cool-season favorite, cabbage can be planted directly in the ground. Choose varieties like ‘Savoy’ or ‘Red Cabbage’ for a splash of color.
  • Carrots: Sow carrot seeds directly in the soil. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun. You can enjoy fresh, crunchy carrots in about 70-80 days.
  • Spinach: This leafy green grows quickly and can be harvested multiple times. Plant seeds in well-prepared soil and keep them well-watered for the best results.

  1. Flowering Plants: To keep your garden looking colorful through the fall, consider planting these beautiful blooms:
  • Mums (Chrysanthemums): These quintessential fall flowers come in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, red, and purple. Plant mums in well-drained soil and full sun for a stunning autumn display.
  • Pansies: Pansies are hardy and can withstand cooler temperatures. They come in a wide range of colors and are perfect for adding a splash of color to your garden beds or containers.
  • Asters: Asters bloom in late summer and continue through the fall. Their star-shaped flowers attract butterflies and come in shades of purple, blue, pink, and white.
  • Sedum (Stonecrop): Sedum is a low-maintenance perennial that produces clusters of star-shaped flowers in late summer and fall. It’s perfect for borders and rock gardens.

  1. Herbs: Herbs not only add flavor to your meals but also bring fragrance and beauty to your garden. Consider planting these now:
  • Cilantro: This herb grows quickly and prefers cooler weather. Plant seeds directly in the garden and enjoy fresh cilantro in your dishes in about 4-6 weeks.
  • Parsley: Parsley is a biennial plant that can be harvested throughout the fall. Plant seeds or young plants in a sunny spot.
  • Thyme: Thyme is a hardy perennial that thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. Its small, fragrant leaves are perfect for seasoning fall recipes.

Tips for Success

  • Prepare the Soil: Ensure your soil is well-prepared before planting. Add compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.
  • Watering: Keep new plantings well-watered, especially during the hot summer months. Once established, many fall plants require less frequent watering.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around your plants to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil temperature consistent.
  • Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer to support healthy growth. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers or produce.

By planting these vegetables, flowers, and herbs now, you’ll set your garden up for a beautiful and productive fall season. Whether you’re harvesting fresh veggies or enjoying vibrant blooms, a little planning and effort now will pay off in the months to come.

Feel free to share your gardening tips and photos by tagging Harbor Club on your favorite social network. We’d love to see how your gardens are growing!

Life at Harbor Club: A Heartfelt Journey of Community and Connection

Harbor Club real estate sales director Kathy Phillips with long-term resident Louise Hull

After 18 years of calling Harbor Club home, it’s safe to say that this community left an indelible mark on Louise Hull and her husband. Their story is one of discovery, connection, and cherished memories that began when they moved from Charlotte in 2006, following a two-year search for the perfect lakefront neighborhood.

For Louise and her husband, the decision to settle in Harbor Club was driven by a deep desire to be part of a real community—a neighborhood where full-time residents created a genuine sense of belonging. Unlike other nearby developments, where part-time residents often dominate, Harbor Club’s welcoming environment, where 85% of the residents live year-round, was precisely what they were searching for. It was the perfect fit!

“Harbor Club felt like a real neighborhood,” Louise recalls. “We wanted a place where people were here to stay, where you could build real relationships, and that’s exactly what we found.”

One of the couple’s most treasured experiences at Harbor Club was the sense of community that permeated every aspect of their lives. From impromptu gatherings at the Boathouse, where friends would bring lawn chairs and enjoy live music, to the warmth of friendships forged over nearly two decades, the bonds they formed have left a lasting impact.

“We absolutely love the Boathouse,” Louise says with a smile. “The music, the people—it was always such a good time. We made so many friends here, and I already miss them terribly.”

Over the years, Louise witnessed Harbor Club evolve and grow, bringing in new residents and expanding its amenities. From the Ladies League, where she knew nearly everyone, to the enhancement of the fitness center and the development of the Pickleball courts, the community has continually adapted to meet the needs of its residents.

“We even had our own ’80s Club,” Louise laughs, reflecting on the fun they had together. “But for any community to thrive, you have to welcome new people and make them feel at home. That’s what keeps Harbor Club vibrant and alive.”

The decision to sell their beloved home was not easy, especially when her husband’s health began to decline. But through it all, Kathy Phillips, Director of Sales at Harbor Club and a resident herself was there to offer unwavering support and guidance.

“Kathy was wonderful,” Louise says with gratitude. “She made an incredibly difficult time more manageable. From helping us list the house quickly to providing a support system when my husband went into assisted living, she was there every step of the way.”

Kathy’s assistance extended beyond the sale. She offered resources for an estate sale and even provided contacts for cleaning services. Managing the logistics of the sale with the involvement of Louise, her daughter, and her son, Kathy, helped keep everyone level-headed and focused.

As Louise reflects on her time at Harbor Club, she offers this advice to anyone considering making the community their home: “Get out and meet people! There are so many events and activities for everyone, whether you play golf or not. Make yourself available, join the Ladies League, or find other ways to connect. The friendships you’ll build here are worth it.”

For Louise and her husband, Harbor Club was more than just a place to live—it was a true home filled with love, laughter, and lifelong friendships. Though they didn’t plan on leaving, they are grateful for the 18 wonderful years they spent in this remarkable community.

Celebrating Tom Weiskopf: The British Open Champion and Harbor Club’s Visionary Course Architect

As the British Open returns to Royal Troon this week, it’s a fitting time to remember Tom Weiskopf’s remarkable triumph there in 1973. Weiskopf led all four rounds in ’73, tying the Open scoring record of 12-under par 276, matching the then-existing Open Championship record set by Arnold Palmer on the same course in 1962. Known for his precision and competitive spirit, Weiskopf’s victory at Royal Troon remains a highlight of his illustrious golfing career. This achievement adds to his legacy as the co-architect of Harbor Club’s esteemed golf course, designed alongside Jay Morrish.

Harbor Club’s golf course, nestled by Lake Oconee, reflects Weiskopf’s dedication to creating challenging yet enjoyable courses. Ranked among Georgia’s best, it stands as a testament to his skill both on and off the green. The layout combines natural beauty with strategic design, featuring risk-reward holes that mirror Weiskopf’s bold playing style.

Junior Golf Camp at Harbor Club: A Week to Remember

Golf enthusiasts, young and old, know that mastering the game of golf requires patience, skill, and the right equipment. Harbor Club hosted a memorable Junior Golf Camp this summer, where budding golfers learned, played, and grew in a supportive and fun environment. Whether the children picked up a club for the first time or refined their skills, our camp offered an exciting opportunity for young golfers to thrive.

A Week of Learning and Fun

The camp was structured to provide a comprehensive golfing experience over four days. Each day was packed with activities designed to teach golf fundamentals, improve technique, and instill a love for the game. Here’s a look back at what the young golfers experienced:

Getting Fitted by the Best

The week kicked off with US Kids Golf on-site for complimentary club fittings. Having clubs that are the right size and weight is crucial for young players, and our partnership with US Kids Golf ensured that each child got the best start possible. Proper fitting made a significant difference in their performance and comfort.

Key Areas of Focus

To help young golfers develop a well-rounded game, our camp emphasized three crucial areas of practice:

1. Putting

Putting is vital as it makes up a significant portion of the game. The campers worked on consistency and accuracy with short putts (3-6 feet) and practiced lag putting to improve distance control. Additionally, they learned how to read the slope and speed of the greens to enhance their putting accuracy.

2. Short Game (Chipping and Pitching)

The short game is essential for lowering scores and getting up and down from around the greens. Campers practiced chipping from various lies and distances to improve their ability to get the ball close to the hole. They also worked on different pitching shots with varying trajectories and spent time mastering bunker shots to gain confidence.

3. Full Swing (Driving and Iron Play)

Improving the full swing helps golfers hit more fairways and greens. Campers practiced driving to increase distance and accuracy off the tee and worked on hitting crisp iron shots with consistent contact and precision. Regular checks on swing fundamentals, such as grip, stance, and alignment, ensured a solid and repeatable swing.

An Unforgettable Experience

The camp was a fantastic week of golf, friendship, and unforgettable memories at Harbor Club. Whether the children dreamed of becoming the next golf champion like Tiger or Phil or wanted to enjoy a new sport, our camp was the perfect place to start.

“Our experienced instructors were passionate about teaching and committed to providing every camper a fun, safe, and enriching environment. We look forward to hosting more young golfers in the future and continuing to foster a love for the game,” said Doug Price, Harbor Club Golf Professional.

For more information on golf at Harbor Club, you can search for available tee times and read detailed information on each hole on the Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf designed course on our golf page.

Harbor Club Rises On GolfWeek’s 2024 “Best Courses You Can Play” List

Harbor Club Tops Golfweek Magazine’s Annual Ranking for Best Golf Courses in Georgia

The advent of summer summons not only flowering crepe myrtles but also the much-anticipated Golfweek Magazine’s Annual “Best Issue,” where golf courses from all over the country are evaluated on a variety of criteria. And once again, the golf course at Harbor Club claimed its spot among the elite of some 500 golf courses in Georgia.

Harbor Club, a 1,000-acre lake and golf community tucked along the shores of Lake Oconee, earned the lofty #7 ranking among the “2024 Best Courses You Can Play” in Georgia, per the venerable Golfweek ranking panelists.

Harbor Club’s sweeping lakefront design was the first offering on the East Coast from the esteemed architectural partnership of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish in 1991. The course touches the shoreline of Lake Oconee, Georgia’s second largest lake, six different times while also skirting four creeks and a number of interior ponds.

Golfweek’s eclectic rating panel consists of 800 voters from around the world. They rely on 10 criteria to rate a golf course, including overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology, and the “Walk in the park test”, which rates the sense of the course as worthy of spending four hours on it.

According to the Golfweek editors, “The members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on our criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged together to produce a final rating for each course. Then each course is ranked against other courses in its state, or nationally, to produce the final rankings.”

Harbor Club is also rated among the “Top Courses You Can Play” in Georgia per both Golf Digest and GOLF magazine’s annual course rankings.

The Harbor Club golf course is kept in pristine condition thanks to extensive winter landscaping projects and meticulous year-round grooming. The course is currently progressing on removing 15 sand bunkers to enhance its playability and pace of play.

The Harbor Club course anchors an inviting stable of amenities at the community, including The Grove, an expansive fitness, recreation, and special event campus. Additional amenities include an award-winning marina, restaurant, and boat storage facility, an expansive outdoor Swim and Racquet Club with a junior Olympic swimming pool and lighted tennis, plus six pickleball courts. The 15,000 sq. ft. clubhouse offers full-service dining, a fully stocked golf shop, plus men’s and women’s locker rooms. For tee-times, non-resident, and corporate club membership information at Harbor Club, call 800-505-4653 or visit www.harborclub.com.

Summer Gatherings and Unforgettable Moments

By: Kathy Phillips

At Harbor Club, we are looking forward to welcoming summer with fun gatherings and memorable moments as we embrace the exciting lake season ahead. With Memorial Day just around the corner, I’m excited to dive into a three-week celebration featuring tips for entertaining Southern style.

Week 1: Kitchen Comforts & Culinary Charms

Southern Kitchen ready for entertaining guests

The Kitchen is the heart of every home and the stage for culinary masterpieces. As you prepare to host your own gatherings this summer, consider these helpful tips:

• Efficient Layout: Keep your kitchen layout conducive to mingling amongst friends and family. Arrange seating areas or bar stools where guests can chat with the chef without getting in the way of meal prep.

• Ambient Lighting: Opt for warm, inviting lighting to create a cozy atmosphere (or embrace the natural sunlight for daytime parties!) Dimmable lights or candles can add a touch of elegance to your gatherings.

• Preparation is Key: Prep as much as you can ahead of time to minimize stress during the event. Chop ingredients, set the table, and pre-mix cocktails so you can enjoy the company of your guests without feeling overwhelmed.

Week 2: Memorial Day Homage

Cottage in Carriage Ridge at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee with American Flag on the front of the house

As we approach Memorial Day, Harbor Club is brimming with reverence and gratitude. This week, amidst the American flags and the solemn beauty of remembrance, we gather to pay homage to the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Here are some thoughtful ways to pay tribute while hosting your Patriotic Picnic:

• Patriotic Curb Appeal: Boost your home’s curb appeal with patriotic decorations like flags, bunting, or red, white, and blue flowerpots. A welcoming exterior sets the tone for your Memorial Day gathering and showcases your pride in the community and country.

• Memorial Garden Tribute: Create a memorial garden in your backyard as a tribute to fallen heroes. Plant red, white, and blue flowers, and consider adding a flagpole or plaque to honor those who have served. A serene outdoor space dedicated to remembrance can add a meaningful touch to your home.

• Outdoor Games with Patriotic Twist: Organize outdoor games and activities with a patriotic twist, such as a relay race with red, white, and blue obstacles, or a trivia game about the country’s history and symbols.

At Harbor Club, Memorial Day is not just a holiday—it’s a sacred opportunity to come together as a community, to honor the past, celebrate the present, and cherish the precious gift of freedom. So, as we raise our glasses in toast, let us also bow our heads in solemn remembrance, for it is because of their sacrifice that we are able to gather here today in peace and unity.

Week 3: Patio Parties & Sunset Soirees

Southern backyard porch with fire pit for entertaining at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

There’s something truly special about Southern-style homes and their curb appeal – those sprawling verandas where time seems to slow down, and the world feels just a little bit sweeter. This week, we’re trading our aprons for sun hats to embrace the art of patio and porch entertaining. Here are some tips to make the most of your outdoor entertaining space:

• Comfortable Seating: Invest in comfortable seating options like rocking chairs, porch swings, or cozy lounge chairs. Your guests will appreciate having a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the view.

• Decorative Touches: Add personal touches such as colorful throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and potted plants. Create a welcoming ambiance that reflects your personal style and invites guests to feel more at home.

As the warmer months roll in, there’s a familiar excitement that permeates the air around Lake Oconee. It’s the anticipation of lazy days on the water, soaking up the sun, and indulging in delicious food with friends and family. And at Harbor Club, that excitement reaches new heights with the reopening of the beloved Boathouse Restaurant for the season.

Boaters and lake enthusiasts will once again enjoy cold beverages, delicious food, live entertainment, and, this year, The King of Pops popsicles at The Boathouse Restaurant for the 2024 lake season.

Located on the Richland Creek side of Lake Oconee – known for the lake’s clearest waters – The Boathouse is a vibrant marina and lakefront amenity that features a rustic and inviting restaurant, banquet room, and dry boat storage.

One of the highlights of any visit to the Boathouse is the delectable menu crafted to delight your taste buds. From classic favorites to inventive creations, there’s something to please every palate. Some of this year’s menu highlights include:

Boathouse Pulled Pork Nachos: Dive into a mountain of crispy tortilla chips topped with tender pulled pork, melted cheese, tangy barbecue sauce, and all the fixings. It’s a perfect sharing dish to kick off your lakeside feast.

Peel & Eat Shrimp: Fresh, succulent shrimp served with zesty cocktail sauce – a quintessential lakeside indulgence that pairs perfectly with the scenic views of Lake Oconee (and a frozen margarita).

Smash Burgers: Sometimes, simplicity reigns supreme. Enjoy a juicy smash burger, lovingly crafted with premium beef and served with all your favorite toppings. It’s a taste of nostalgia that never disappoints.

Fish Reuben: A unique twist on a classic sandwich featuring flaky fish, tangy sauerkraut, creamy Thousand Island dressing, and melted Swiss cheese, all sandwiched between slices of toasted rye bread. It’s a flavor combination that will leave you craving more.

Key Lime Pie: No meal is complete without a sweet ending, and the Boathouse’s key lime pie delivers the perfect finale. With its creamy filling, zesty lime flavor, and graham cracker crust, it’s a slice of summer perfection.

The King of Pops: Indulge in a refreshing treat with the King of Pops popsicles, offering a variety of flavors to cool you down on those hot summer days.

The restaurant is open to the public Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering walk-up counter service for food and drink. It also offers beer, wine, mixed drinks, and virgin cocktails by the glass.

There is indoor seating in the restaurant or outdoor picnic benches. You can even throw down a blanket and have a picnic on the lakefront Grand Lawn. Or just jump in your boat and get back on the lake. There is also the chance to place a take-out order between 11 am and 8 pm by calling 706-999-9717.

On Saturdays, The Boathouse will offer a variety of live entertainment, from acoustic guitar on most afternoons (11 am-3 pm) to some of the lake’s favorite bands on select evenings (6-9 pm).

For boating and water sports lovers, The Boathouse marina features a boat ramp, community dock, and marina fuel pumps. The restaurant also sells life jackets, rope, and other boating necessities.

The marina’s dry boat storage buildings are available to both Harbor Club residents and those who live outside of the community. Ultimately, as many as 300 boat storage spaces may be available, making The Boathouse the largest marina on Lake Oconee. The marina operations are open year-round.

At the Boathouse, it’s not just about the food; it’s about the experience. Our dedicated restaurant staff goes above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels welcome and well taken care of. Whether you’re a regular or visiting for the first time, you’ll be greeted with a warm smile and attentive service that will make you feel like part of the Harbor Club family. From the small gestures like American flags on mailboxes throughout the community, residents foster a deep sense of unity and gratitude, reminding us of all the true meaning behind the holiday.

Lake Oconee is a haven for those who love water sports, and Harbor Club offers excellent access to the lake’s amenities. On Memorial Day weekend, the lake comes alive with activity as boats, jet skis, and tubers glide across the water. Harbor Club’s marina facilities make it easy to embark on aquatic adventures for those utilizing the marina’s services. The most heartwarming aspect of Memorial Day at Lake Oconee, particularly at Harbor Club, is the sense of community it fosters. Neighbors, friends, and visitors come together to share in the joys of the holiday and pay tribute to those who have served. This collective spirit of camaraderie and gratitude makes Memorial Day at Harbor Club a unique and unforgettable annual tradition.

Exquisite Harbor Club Member Experiences: Burgundy Wine Tasting at Harbor Club

As members gathered in the relaxed luxury of The Clubhouse, they were greeted with an exquisite assortment of meats and cheeses curated to complement the distinguished wines being offered. From the first cork pop, the stage was set for a truly great experience.

The Albert Bichot family’s legacy spans generations, dating back to 1831. As one of the top three producers in Burgundy, their wines embody centuries of expertise and tradition. Guiding the evening’s proceedings was none other than Troy Heinzman, the esteemed representative of the winery from the eastern coast of the United States. With a wealth of knowledge and passion, Troy illuminated the rich history of the Bichot family and the cherished Burgundy wine region, transporting attendees on a journey through time and terroir.

With each pour, members embarked on a sensory exploration of Burgundy’s essence, discovering why the region is revered for its mastery of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. From the delicate nuances of the whites to the velvety depths of the reds, each wine told a story of craftsmanship, leaving an indelible impression on every palate.

As the evening drew to a close, and glasses were raised in a toast to a wonderful experience shared, it was evident that the Burgundy wine tasting at Harbor Club had left a lasting impression on all who attended. 5 Expert Tips to Add Value to Your Home

By: Kathy Philips, Director of Sales

In the current competitive Lake Oconee real estate market, enhancing the value of your home is not only a wise investment, but it also positions your property favorably for future resale opportunities. As your dedicated realtor, I am excited to share the top 5 ideas you can implement to add more value to your home to help you maximize the potential of your property. Whether you’re considering selling in the near future or want to invest in your property, these tips will empower you to make informed decisions and elevate the appeal of your home.

#5: Upgrade Light Fixtures

Enhancing your home with modern and stylish light fixtures can significantly elevate its appeal and create a more captivating atmosphere. Upgraded fixtures not only enhance the ambiance of your living spaces but also add a touch of sophistication to your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers and creating a more enjoyable living environment for you and your family.

#4: Upgrade Flooring

Upgrading your flooring from carpet to hardwood or updating tile not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also offers several practical benefits. Hardwood floors are known for their durability, timeless elegance, and ability to increase a property’s perceived value. Similarly, modern and well-maintained tile flooring can elevate the overall look and feel of your home, especially in high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Investing in quality materials and professional installation can set your home apart in the market, attracting potential buyers seeking a mix of luxury and functionality. Additionally, updated flooring contributes to easier maintenance and improved air quality and can be a key factor in buyers’ decision-making process when comparing properties.

#3: Renovate Bathrooms

Modern, well-designed bathrooms not only enhance the visual appeal of your property but also offer practical convenience and luxury, making your home more attractive to potential buyers. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy a spa-like bathroom. Here are a couple of impactful ways to improve your bathrooms:

Upgrade Fixtures and Finishes: Installing modern, high-quality fixtures and finishes, such as faucets, showerheads, and hardware, can instantly elevate the look and feel of your bathrooms. Opting for elegant, water-efficient fixtures not only adds visual appeal but also contributes to sustainability, an increasingly important consideration for many homebuyers.

Separate Tub and Shower: Introducing a separate tub and shower configuration, possibly with a freestanding tub, can add a luxurious and spa-like feel to the bathroom.

Enhance Functional Space: To maximize the functional space in your bathrooms, consider reconfiguring the layout or adding storage solutions.

By renovating your bathrooms, you’re not only investing in the comfort and satisfaction of your current home for yourself to enjoy but also positioning your home as a desirable and valuable asset in the eyes of potential buyers.

#2: Update Your Kitchen

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home and a focal point for potential buyers. Here are some impactful ways to update your kitchen without a complete renovation:

Cabinet Refresh: Consider repainting or refinishing your cabinets for a cost-effective transformation. Upgrading the hardware can also make a noticeable difference in the overall look.

New Countertops: Investing in new countertops can instantly elevate the aesthetics of your kitchen. Options like quartz and butcher block offer durability and timeless appeal.

Modernize Appliances: Updating old appliances with energy-efficient and stainless-steel models can enhance both the visual appeal and functionality of your kitchen.

Statement Backsplash: Adding a stylish and eye-catching backsplash can breathe new life into your kitchen space, creating a focal point that enhances the overall design.

Lighting Makeover: Introducing modern and strategically placed lighting fixtures can brighten up your kitchen and create an inviting atmosphere.

By taking these steps to update your kitchen, you can significantly enhance the overall appeal, functionality, and value of your home.

#1: Embrace Open Concept Living

In the quest to elevate the value of your home, embracing an open-concept design is a timeless choice that resonates with modern homebuyers. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:

Brighter Space

Access to natural light in a home is crucial for creating a welcoming space—not to mention it’s necessary for mental health (and your plants!). In traditional, separated floor plans, access to natural light could be limited by walls. An open floor plan removes those barriers, instantly carrying natural light throughout the entire space.

Enhanced Sociability

Of course, with an open floor plan, there is nowhere to hide! Without the walls blocking your line of sight, you can easily watch the kids, have a conversation without yelling, and create the perfect entertainment space.

Flexibility with Design and Décor

Motivated buyers want to make the most of their investment and live in a home that suits their lifestyle. So, open floor plans let homeowners get creative with their furniture and decorations. When there are fewer walls, people can reconfigure areas for different purposes within minutes.

FACT: Include a fireplace, hardwood floors, or ceiling beams to increase your asking price even more.

As we strive to create living spaces that stand the test of time, the open-concept layout emerges as a practical solution for enhancing accessibility and comfort in your home.

Exploring the Fascinating History of Trivia & Harbor Club’s Monthly Trivia Nights

Trivia, derived from the Latin word “trivium,” meaning “three roads,” has traversed a remarkable journey throughout history. From its humble origins to becoming a beloved pastime, trivia has captivated minds and brought people together in pursuit of knowledge and fun. At Harbor Club, a prestigious gated community nestled along Lake Oconee, the tradition of trivia lives on, proving to be wildly popular among members with its monthly trivia nights held at the clubhouse.

Tracing back to ancient times, trivia finds its roots in the gatherings of scholars and thinkers in the great civilizations of Greece and Rome. These individuals engaged in intellectual exchanges, testing each other’s knowledge on a wide array of subjects ranging from philosophy to literature.

The modern concept of trivia emerged in the early 20th century, primarily as a parlor game. However, it wasn’t until the late 20th century that trivia truly gained momentum, thanks partly to the rise of television game shows like “Jeopardy!” and “Trivial Pursuit,” which became cultural phenomena, igniting a widespread fascination with random facts and obscure knowledge.

One of the perks of being a member of the Harbor Club is the ongoing special events, such as monthly gatherings at the clubhouse, to partake in an evening of camaraderie. Since 2015, trivia nights at The Clubhouse with Paige, the host, have become a cherished tradition, fostering a sense of community and friendly competition among participants.

What sets Harbor Club’s trivia nights apart is the meticulous attention to detail in curating diverse themes for each gathering. From music to food and drinks, every trivia night offers a unique journey of knowledge. Whether participants are literature, music, science, or sports enthusiasts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and explore.

Harbor Club extends membership opportunities to its residents and non-residents who seek to immerse themselves in the vibrant social scene and exclusive events at The Clubhouse. Membership grants individuals access to many amenities and activities, including the highly anticipated trivia nights.

For residents, membership offers a seamless integration into the community, providing opportunities to forge meaningful connections with neighbors and partake in various social events. Non-residents, too, are welcomed with open arms, invited to experience the unparalleled hospitality and camaraderie that define Harbor Club’s relaxed luxury.

Harbor Club Year in Review – 2023

We look back at 2023 at Harbor Club as a year of benevolence, stability, challenges-met, and forward-looking strength, all speaking well to the future of our community with the year to come.

That said, here’s a look at the accomplishments and challenges of the year gone by…

– Harbor Club added 58 new club members across the year under the guidance of Membership Director Don Forchilli, now in his third year with our community. Well done, Don!

– We also welcomed a new property management firm, Beacon Management Services, with seasoned Property Manager Devan Donald at the helm. Devan reports that the Harbor Club Master Property Owners Association ended the year financially strong, with surplus revenues of over $166,000 in reserve. Members experienced a slight annual dues increase to $1,500, still a great value relative to other local and national-class golf and lake communities.

Harbor Club Real Estate reported that $50,012,150 in dollar volume of homesites and homes closed in 2023, with a total of 101 transactions according to statistics from Lake Country Board of Realtors.  Kathy Phillips with Harbor Club Real Estate captured 44 percent of the dollar volume sold and 60% of all transactions assisted by Brooke Chandler as sales coordinator. a new addition to the team.

Kathy also worked closely with our Atlanta-based sales and marketing partner, @properties Development Group ǀ Christies International, in launching a fresh, informative and visually compelling new community website.

– The clubhouse was decked-out this year with the addition of four new custom entrance doors at the cost of $20,000. Additionally, the interior roof of the clubhouse received a complete spray insulation that will help keep the building nice and cool for many summers ahead.

– The clubhouse also welcomed Courtney Barnett as the new Restaurant General Manager. Courtney has 18 years’ experience in the hospitality industry and looks forward to unveiling a new menu this month with traditional southern offerings and a bit of Cajun flair.

– Keith Kelly and his staff turned 24,000 rounds of golf and increased revenues in 2023, despite some speed bumps from Mother Nature’s sprinklers, which dampened a few days during Masters Week. Rain also had its way in June and July, with roughly 39 days of it in 60 days. The good news, cart and trail fees will stay the same for golf members.

Keith and team continued to host local high school teams, including Lake Oconee Academy, for their practice rounds and regional tournaments.

– Course superintendent James Hunt also dealt with water as it crept out of aging galvanized pipes on hole #15, causing a couple fairway sink holes that mandated extensive drainage renovation from the tee down to the pond next to the green. With the $300,000 project completed, the cart-path-only restrictions have been lifted on the beautiful par-4. All total, Harbor Company reinvested $750,000 in capital improvements on just the golf course.

Unfortunately, the work on #15 delayed progress on the bunker renovation plan, which is hoped to be completed in 2024. In addition to freshening-up the sand bunkers, we are also going to say good bye to 17 of them, which will be filled-in and topped with sod. That work will increase the playability of the course, reduce maintenance costs and give the crew more time to perfectly groom the 51 bunkers that will remain.

Other big projects for James this coming year will be the beautifying and enlarging of the channel that frames the 18th hole, tree removal, plus wetland cleanup on 17 and 18.

– Spirited competition, great camaraderie and a delicious lunch was had during the Harbor Club Pickleball Tournament in November. Tournament top honors went to Holly Noordhoek, Sharon Novak, Susie Brown, Marty Amschler, Billy Adams and Greg Preston. Harbor Club Real Estate generously donated $500 to the community’s pickleball community.

– The Boathouse Marina welcomed a new manager with the hire of Shaw Richardson. Plans are for the restaurant to be fully operational beginning this Memorial Day, maybe even a smidge earlier.

– Harbor Club has partnered with one of the country’s premier wedding planners in Athens-based Gilly Francis. Her vast experience, resources and creativity are sure to enhance lifelong memories for that special day.

– Butch Foust and his landscaping company continue to do a great job keeping the common areas and road shoulders wonderfully groomed.

– We were remiss in our letter last year in failing to acknowledge Laurie Rimes’ 25th Anniversary with the community. It’s hard to imagine a resident of Harbor Club who hasn’t engaged with Laurie over that period. We’re so lucky to have her. Congratulations also go to Brad Ward, who begins his 30th year on the golf course maintenance crew.

– We said Hale and Farewell in 2023 to the all-knowing water tower donning the original equestrian logo that so informed Harbor Club’s formative years and beyond. We hope our steed finds, “Some sweet pastured space where creeks sing on, and tall trees grow.” – Stanley Harrison

Have a safe and memorable 2024!

Why Postponing Your Lake Oconee Home Purchase Could Result in Higher Costs

By Kathy Phillips

beautiful lake home at harbor club

Hello, friends and neighbors!

There’s a hot topic making the rounds in real estate circles: the impact of rising interest rates on homebuyers. It’s an important conversation to have, especially here at Lake Oconee, where the housing market is buzzing with activity. I would like to shed some light on the cost of waiting when it comes to purchasing your dream home and invite you to connect to discuss your real estate needs further.

In our vibrant real estate market, the importance of timing cannot be overstated. Housing prices in the United States have steadily increased each year, maintaining an average annual growth rate of approximately 3% to 5% over the long term. The decision of when to buy can significantly impact your financial future. The restricted availability of homes adds pricing pressure, contributing to the continual rise in housing costs within our region. If you are waiting for an interest rate drop, you can bet a lot of other folks are too…so what does that mean? Available home inventory drops, and you are competing for homes that are quickly getting gobbled up. Buying now gives you more choices of home options. So don’t delay.

Sure, it might be tempting to hold off, hoping for a more favorable market or lower interest rates, but here’s the thing: buying now, even with today’s rates at a pre-COVID level, could be a smart move. While rates in recent years have been phenomenal, many of us can remember when rates were between 9 to 14 percent. Today’s rates offer an excellent opportunity to lock in mortgages at historically low levels.

Despite the allure of waiting for better rates or market conditions, delaying your dream home purchase could come with a hefty price tag. Analysts project that housing prices are on the rise, which means that postponing your decision to buy might mean paying more for the same property down the line. And let’s face it, that could push your dream home further out of reach.

Buying now means securing a fixed monthly payment, providing stability and predictability amidst market fluctuations. What’s more, homeownership brings its own set of financial benefits. The equity you build in your home serves as a hedge against inflation and market volatility, offering long-term security and potential appreciation. It’s not a matter of if an opportunity will emerge in the future to refinance, but when – keep that in mind.

So, while waiting might seem like a safe bet, the reality is that the cost of delaying your home purchase in Lake Oconee could far outweigh the benefits. Now is an opportune time to take the leap into homeownership and secure your slice of paradise at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee.

Curious to learn more? Reach out to me anytime—I’m here to guide you through the ever-changing real estate landscape and help you make the best decision for your future.

Harbor Club Real Estate Sales Touch $50 Million in 2023

Harbor Club on Lake Oconee reports that $49.8 million in home, homesite, cottage, and townhome properties were sold in 2023 at the award-winning golf and lake community, according to data collected from the Lake Country Board of Realtors.

The $49.8 million in sales was comprised of 100 transactions, 43% of which were driven by Harbor Club Properties, a partnership between Harbor Club and the Atlanta-based sales and marketing specialists @properties Development Group ǀ Christies International, led by Director of Sales Kathy Phillips. The 100 sales included new home builds in addition to a broad range of resale properties throughout the community.

The robust sales numbers marks the third-best year in the last decade at Harbor Club, outpaced only by the rocketing sales fueled during the COVID years of ’21 and ’22. Additionally, pending sales for 2024 have already approached $15 million in just the first few weeks of the year.

According to Phillips, “In 2023, Harbor Club at Lake Oconee had an especially solid influx of buyers from all over the United States. The community’s considerable appeal at the lake is driven by its sense of relaxed luxury, broad range of amenities and club activities, plus a wide range of home types and prices ranging from the $300’s to well over $2M.”

An Inside Look at the Latest Design Trends in Our Newest Model Home

Latest-Design-Trends-01.jpeg

2016 is looking quite stylish — and so is our brand new model home! Check out how we’ve incorporated some of the hottest new interior design trends at our newly finished model home located at 1030 Carnoustie Drive.

Houzz stipulates that islands have increased in importance as a central feature of the kitchen. Not only do they provide more workspace for prepping meals, they’ve become favorable seating and storage areas. House Beautiful also predicts that everyone will love a pretty pendant this year, and the ones used in our kitchen certainly make a statement.

A recent Wall Street Journal article stipulated that old world ornamentation is a hot trend too. One of the contributors stated that, “People want traditional and dressy, with a shot of nostalgia, to feel like everything is going to be OK.” You can see it very clearly with the use of this delightful chandelier in the living room of our model home.

Pantone recently named Serenity, a beautiful powder blue color, as one of two Colors of the Year (the other being Rose Quartz.). They describe “Serenity” perfectly, stating that it is, “weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.” With that in mind, it’s the perfect color for the calming master bedroom in our model home.

As per Decoist, bold mirrors are yet another design trend that has become increasingly popular. You can see an example of this trend in the master bedroom (above) and master bathroom (below).

Houzz states that outdoor fabrics are now being utilized indoors. Outdoor fabrics have come a long way, making it challenging to distinguish them from traditional fabrics typically used indoors. This is a very fitting trend for homes at Harbor Club, considering that we are on Lake Oconee and favor a multitude of outdoor activities, such as swimming, boating and of course, golfing on our award-winning course.

Speaking of outdoors, Macala Wright shared that the number 1 interior design trend in 2016 is “Bringing the Outdoors In”. Our model home was built with that in mind, offering up gorgeous transitional spaces between indoors and out. Enjoy your cup of coffee on the screened dining porch off the kitchen (shown below) or take refuge on the huge vaulted covered porch off the living room (shown above). There’s also the large terrace level where you and your company can comfortably lounge while enjoying the view of the hardwood trees and pond.

Sure, these images are great to look at but there’s nothing like seeing this gorgeous new home in person.

Call or email us to arrange a private tour. We look forward to showing you around soon!

Fall Back In Love With Your Outdoor Spaces — Here’s How

Latest-Design-Trends-07.jpeg

Ok, admit it. Your patio, deck, porch or gazebo is probably looking a tad uninviting after a bit of winter neglect. Add the recent layer of spring pollen to the layer of winter dust, and it’s understandable why you avoid simply looking at it. However, spring is the season for all things colorful and new, so throw on your rose-colored glasses and take a look at your outdoor spaces with fresh eyes. It’s time to envision how wonderful and inviting it can be truly be! Make it a reality with a little elbow grease and some clever decorating tips. Try these ideas:

Cleaning

First things first – tackle cleaning your outdoor space and you will have already made huge strides in making it welcoming. Here are steps on how to do it in the easiest and most efficient way possible:

  1. Move all the furniture, rugs, mats and plants out of the space. Decide what you want to keep or get rid of. Anything broken should be repaired or thrown away. Discard all dead plants.
  2. Use an extendable duster to clear cobwebs and dust from all the high corners, overhangs, ceiling fans, shutters, etc.
  3. Replace burnt out bulbs and remove dead bugs from the inside of any light receptacles. Wipe down the fixtures with a microfiber cloth.
  4. Clean windows with a simple 50% vinegar/water solution.
  5. Sweep and/or vacuum the space with a powerful shop vacuum. Also vacuum any rugs or mats.
  6. Wipe down furniture, tables and any other horizontal surfaces with a microfiber cloth to capture dirt and dust, then follow up with warm soapy water for any areas that need extra attention.
  7. Move the furniture back in the space.

Now for the fun part!

Furniture

When you move the furniture back into the space, try rearranging it. Make the layout comfortable and cohesive to conversation. Consider adding clever storage, such as deck boxes that can do double duty as seating, simply by adding colorful seat cushions. If you plan on dining in your outdoor space, add places to rest plates and glasses, such as a foldable shelf that can be stowed when not in use. Accent your furniture with colorful throw pillows and throws. Install a few hooks so that lake and pool towels can be hung rather than draped haphazardly over chairs and railings.

Lighting

Take the time to swap out old or broken light fixtures. Keep in mind that a downward glow is more inviting than upward light. You may want to add an outdoor lamp or two so as to enjoy the space after the sun goes down. Add string lights to your porch or pergola. The Edison bulb types are easy to find and cast a beautiful glow. Decorative fire pits are a beautiful accent to your landscape.

Shade

Our summer sun can sometimes be pretty brutal, so be sure to provide a respite to your guests with some inviting shade. Invest in a nice umbrella, add vines to your pergola or add a trendy sail shade to your outdoor space. All of these will make dining alfresco more fun and comfy for everyone.

Plants

Add a few house plants or, if you have at least 6 hours of sunlight, some flower or herb containers in your outdoor space. A small herb garden is a wonderful accent to an outdoor space, especially if you have an outdoor kitchen. If you want to deter deer, try growing rosemary, oregano, sage or thyme. Succulents, such as pretty hens and chicks, are also deer-resistant and will grow happily in full sun on your deck or patio.

Birds

We are lucky to have a lot of interesting, pretty birds at Harbor Club. It’s always fun to observe them! Place a pretty bird bath nearby. Add a feeder, preferably with a no-mess blend of seed. Put up a hummingbird feeder (with clear sugar water only, which is really easy and cheap to make). Add a few bird houses too. Not only will they be fun to watch, the birds can help keep down the insect population in your yard.

Add fun and whimsy

Add a small fountain to your space to enjoy the calming effect of bubbling water. If you have room, add a swing or a hammock to your outdoor space. Keep board games handy for a fun, impromptu activity. Or try your hand at yard games such as bocce ball, corn hole, or badminton. A few whimsical touches, like kinetic sculpture, rain chains and wind chimes are always welcome, calming features.

Cheers to making your patio, deck and porch spaces into a lovely buffer between indoors and out.

Time to Get Your Boat Ready for Spring!

boating.jpeg

Spring has sprung…and you know what that means, right? Boating season begins! Now is the time to get your boat ship-shape so you can thoroughly enjoy being out on Lake Oconee, without the maintenance hassles. Mind you, we have the great advantage of having our very knowledgeable marina manager, Jerry Cash, and his team available to efficiently and effectively get your boat out of dry storage and back on the lake. But if you want to get your boat lake-worthy on your own, you’ll certainly want to check on each of the following:

Outside visual check

If your boat is safely out of the water, either on a lift or a trailer, take the time to walk around and inspect it. Take a close look at the propeller to check that it is secured properly. Also look for cracks, dings and distortion on the propeller as well as on the hull and make repairs as needed. Double check to make sure your drain plug is in place.

Fuel

Don’t just fill up and go! Take a moment or two to inspect the fuel system. Look for leaks and ensure that all associated hoses aren’t brittle or cracked. If they are, replace them. Ensure that all clamps are properly secured. Check the fuel filter and replace it if need be.

Fluids

Check all fluid levels, including engine oil, power steering, power trim and coolant. If you did not change the engine oil, oil filter and drive lubricants before putting your boat in storage last year, be sure to do that now.

Electrical

Ensure that all electrical connections are corrosion-free. If you find any corroded terminals, safely remove and clean them. Be sure that your battery is charged up AND that it can hold a charge for an extended period of time. Test all gauges, lights and electronics to ensure they are operating properly. Have a few spare bulbs and fuses handy, as you’ll never know when you need them.

Engine

Replace old spark plugs with new ones and check the air filter to see if it needs replacing. Check all belts and cables and ensure that they are not loose or overly worn. Don’t chance it – replace any that you find concerning. Also, test your engine before you get the boat in the water — be sure to start it up outside where there is adequate ventilation. Properly lubricate all moving parts.

Safety stuff

This is the stuff that is SO easy to overlook! Be sure to have enough properly-fitting and good quality life preservers (PFDs) on board (one for each passenger), a fully charged fire-extinguisher and a well-stocked first-aid kit. Flares can’t hurt either.

Miscellaneous

Be sure that your boat registration is up-to-date. Also check on your ropes and anchor. If you are trailering your boat, be sure that your trailer tires are road-worthy and that the brake, turn signal and running lights are working properly. There you have it! A little preventative maintenance now will go a long way toward wonderful boating experiences on the lake. Don’t forget that our Boathouse marina has year-round access to fuel, our store and, of course the boat ramp. We look forward to seeing you on the lake soon!

St. Patrick’s Day – Unique Facts, Lore and Traditions To Celebrate (Here or in Nearby Savannah, Georgia)

st.-patricks-day.jpeg

With St. Patrick’s day right around the corner, you may be adding corned beef and cabbage to your shopping list and making sure your green outfit and ready. Or perhaps you are staking our your claim for a primo spot at nearby Savannah’s St. Patrick’s parade. How did such traditions come about? You’ll be surprised…

St. Patrick
Believe it or not, St. Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Britain and kidnapped by Irish pirates when he was 16. He then worked as a slave for 17 years in Ireland until he was able to escape back to Britain. However, he returned to Ireland later as a missionary to bring Christianity to the people.

The holiday
The Irish had typically celebrated St. Patrick’s day on March 17th (the anniversary date of St. Patrick’s death) by praying for missionaries and celebrating with a large meal. The St. Patrick’s day we now celebrate in the US is more about national pride.

Shamrock
As a missionary, the shamrock’s three leaves helped St. Patrick explain the Christian holy trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to the people of Ireland. The traditional shamrock also symbolized the rebirth of spring, which later fueled the idea of wearing green clothing to celebrate the holiday. Believe it or not, shamrocks don’t exist. We know them to actually be clover. As you know, finding a four-leaf clover represents good luck. But you’ll need luck finding one — your chances are 1 in 10,000.

Green
St. Patrick’s day, the religious holiday, used to be celebrated with all things blue. As it transitioned to being more of a celebration of Ireland’s history, so did the color, from blue to green, which better represented shamrock as well as the “Emerald Isle” of Ireland.

Corned Beef and Cabbage
Cabbage, a cheap spring vegetable, is traditionally Irish, but alas, corned beef is not. During Ireland’s potato famine, many of the Irish immigrated to the US with most. ending up in New York City. Money was tight, so the Irish immigrants replaced their traditional boiled Irish bacon (which was actually closer to a pork loin) with corned beef. They learned about the alternative from their Jewish neighbors.

Drinking
In Ireland, St. Patrick’s day was a dry holiday until the law was overturned in 1970. It was done at that point to help boost. Ireland’s springtime tourism. It’s also interesting to note that Irish-American Catholics were sometimes required to fast. from drinking during Lent. However, on St. Patrick’s Day, they were allowed to break this fast. — and likely the cause for the day’s association with drinking heavily.

Guinness
About 13 million pints of the Irish stout, Guinness are consumed on St. Patrick’s Day. Most see the beverage to be black or dark brown in color, but it is actually a dark ruby red. Want to know how to perfectly pour your Guinness? Tilt the glass at 45 degrees when pouring until it is three-quarters full, then let the beer settle before filling the rest of glass.

Parades
New York City hosted the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1762, when Irish soldiers marched through the streets to reconnect with their roots. Georgia’s first city, Savannah, has been hosting a St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1813. Today, The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah is the second largest in the U.S., right behind New York. Savannah celebrates the holiday during the entire month of March, which is why it one of the most. popular times to visit. The parade and festivities draw over 300,000 people each year.

Greening of waterways
Many cities dye their waterways green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Chicago is renown for this. In fact, Michelle Obama, a native of Chicago, has been dying the fountain on the south green lawn at the Whitehouse since 2009. Savannah attempted green it’s river in in 1961, but the results were disappointing, as most of the green dye was quickly swept out to sea. Today, they dye the water green at the fountain at Forsyth Park instead.

Events
If you want to get in the Irish spirit a little closer to home, come enjoy our wonderful St. Patrick’s Day dinner and DJ, starting at 5pm at the clubhouse restaurant. Or check out the Willis Clan coming to the Oconee Performing Arts Society on March 16th. But with Savannah being fairly close by, you may want to take advantage of some bigger the festivities. The St Patricks Day Parade is on March 17th at 10:15am, rain or shine. The Festival runs from March 17th to March 19th and is located on River Street and in City Market.

During an St. Patrick’s Day event earlier this month in Savannah, First District U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter offered his thoughts on the celebration. He said, “On St. Patrick’s Day, we’re all Irish. It’s such a special day because of the tradition. It’s such a special day because of the pride that we take in it. St. Patrick’s day is about family. It’s about friends, and community.” To us, that sounds just like Harbor Club, doesn’t it? Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Harbor Club Advances to 3rd on Golfweek’s “Best Courses” List

Members of Harbor Club have another reason to be proud of their community, as it is quite the honor to move up on the ranking of any prestigious list. Ranked 4th last year, we are extremely pleased to announce that Harbor Club Golf Course is now 3rd on Golfweek’s 2016 State-by-State Best Courses You Can Play in the state of Georgia.

Not many golf courses made the cut to be included on this list. In fact, only 15 golf courses in Georgia were qualified. Even more, the courses that ranked first and second are not open for daily play by non-members, but Harbor Club is. So, what were those qualifiers? Here are just a few:

  • Variety of golf holes
  • Memorability of golf holes
  • Overall land plan
  • Golf course conditioning
  • Golf course ecology
  • The “Walk in the park” test

You may be wondering what the “Walk in the park” test is. As you may have imagined, it is defined as “the degree to which the course is ultimately worth spending 4 hours as a compelling outdoor experience.” You gain enjoyment not only from the game itself, but delight in the aesthetics and design of the course as well. There was a great deal of input from Golfweek’s ranking panel, of which there were many. Stemming from seven countries, there were a total of 675 voters who contributed to the results. With so many golf courses in Georgia, how did Harbor Club’s course make the cut? There are multiple reasons. Skillfully designed and created by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, our unique course touches the shoreline of beautiful Lake Oconee six times and skirts four creeks and several ponds. In addition, the superintendent, Jeff Miller, and the head golf professional, Keith Kelly have worked very hard on a recent comprehensive enhancement program that included:

  • Expanded turf conditioning practices
  • Irrigation system upgrades
  • Extensive planting of flowering shrubs and trees
  • Underbrush removal to open up view corridors
  • New cart paths
  • New sand bunkers
  • Meticulous maintenance of bent grass greens (for an excellent putting experience)

All of their efforts have made one of the best golf courses in Georgia even better. Harbor Club general manager, Brandon Matney, congratulated them both for “earning the praise of the discerning Golf week ranking panelists.” Want to experience the Harbor Club Golf Course for yourself? Call or visit us today and inquire about our limited number of VIP Golf Passes. Not only do we have a fantastic golf course, you can enjoy a delicious meal at our Clubhouse restaurant and browse leading-edge items at our well-stocked golf shop. Easily book a tee time by calling us at (706) 453-4414 or reserving online. Remember — non-resident golf memberships are also available for an award-winning experience.

Spring Is House Hunting Season! Here’s How To Be A Well-Prepared Buyer

Believe it or not, spring is right around the corner. You can see indications of it everywhere. There have even been a few daffodils blooming! But outside of the clues nature has been providing, there are other signs too. Literally. “For Sale” signs, to be exact. ’Tis the season to buy and sell homes. In fact, according to Freddie Mac, April, May, and June accounted for 40% of all home sales in 2015. How come? People are ready to quit hibernating and get out of their winter lairs. They are itching to get in the sun and go hunting for a new, better home. More importantly, it’s a critical time for being able to easily transition kids from one school to another. Many families typically rush to buy a new home in the spring, settle in during the summer, then have their kids start at a new school in the fall. It’s a smart, strategic timeline. If you haven’t already heard, 2016 promises to be a competitive home-buying year. So how can you get a a jump start ahead of all the other frantic buyers that are putting offers on YOUR chosen dream home? Keep the following tactics in mind so you don’t miss out:

Determine your wish list

Do you truly know what you want? What area do you hope to live in? Is there a particular school you want your kids to attend. Have you visited them both? Got a preference for new construction or resale? Want the master on the main floor or can you live with one upstairs? Your older self may not prefer the latter. Do you want access to a golf course? How about a big piece of land? Do you want to maintain that too? Honestly think about what you and your family want. But remember, very rarely will you find the perfect home that grants each wish. Decide which wishes you can be flexible on.

Get pre-approved for a mortgage.

Yes, you know this one already, but have you actually gotten it done? If speed is of the essence, buyers that are pre-approved will be able to move much faster than those who are not. Get it done asap.

Go with reality instead of virtual reality

Sure, there is a lot you can learn online when looking for a new home. It’s an excellent way of gathering intel, especially with videos like this one. But to get the real gist for a home or a neighborhood, you’ve got to visit them. Take advantage of open houses (fresh-baked cookies, anyone?) and go on neighborhood tours. Blurry or strategically-cropped online photos may be telling only half the story. The only way you’ll know for sure is if you check out the places yourself. In keeping with that last piece of advice, we’d like to invite you to visit Harbor Club on Lake Oconee. Living here is like being on a staycation every day! Now is the perfect time to see for yourself. Who knows — if all goes well, you’ll be on the lake and golf course in no time. See you soon!

(PS – The stunning home pictured above is for sale — it is situated right on Lake Oconee AND has views of Harbor Club golf course holes 7 & 8! Click here for more photos and details.)

The Masters Golf Tournament: Fascinating Facts You’ll Want to Know

In celebration of the upcoming Masters tournament, and our famed Masters Week at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee, we wanted to share some fun facts regarding the event. Just an hour away from us, Augusta National Golf Club is the famous site for the Masters. Believe it or not, 2016 marks the 80th year of the tournament, one of the biggest golf championships in the world. With so many years of rich history, there are plenty of interesting facts to share, some of which will surprise you.

History

  • The club was conceived by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. They took a $70,000 option on a 365-acre property called Fruitland Nurseries in Augusta, Georgia.
  • The Masters Tournament was called the “Augusta National Invitational” for the first five years, from 1934-1938.
  • “The Masters” was coined by Clifford Roberts in 1938 and utilized starting in 1939. But get this — Bobby Jones was never a fan! Up until 1963, he would reference the tournament as “the so-called Masters.”

A powerful Eisenhower connection

  • Avid golfer Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower is the only U.S. president to have been a club member.
  • Ike’s Pond is named after President Eisenhower as is The Eisenhower Cabin. The cabin was built according to strict Secret Service security guidelines.
  • The famous Eisenhower Tree formerly guarded the left side of the 17th fairway. The president hit it so often that he requested to have it cut down. He was overruled.
  • The Eisenhower Tree was removed after suffering damage during an ice storm in February 2014. Two grafts and a seedling from the famous 80-year old loblolly pine were preserved.

The grounds

  • In 1942, the club was closed so that turkey and cattle could be raised on the Augusta National grounds to help with World War II efforts. In 1943 there were over 200 cattle and 1,400 turkeys grazing that land.
  • Augusta was supposed to have a 19th hole at the request of Bobby Jones. His idea was to give a losing golfer another chance to win back his money in a game of double or nothing. It was supposed to be 90-yards long, uphill towards the clubhouse between the 9th and 18th greens. The plan was dropped due to expense, and the fact that it would impede the view to the 18th green for patrons.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the azaleas are not iced to prevent them from blooming too soon.

The green jacket

  • The tradition of members wearing green jackets began in 1937 when jackets were to be used as “usher’s coats’ so patrons would be able to easily spot members if they needed to ask questions. Members also wore them at the club so that waiters would know who would be paying the bill.
  • In 1949, the first green jacket was awarded as a prize to that year’s Masters champion, Sam Snead.
  • Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus never had his own tailored green jacket until 1998, when the club learned of the mistake and immediately corrected it.
  • For past champions and members alike, the jacket can only be worn at the club. The current Masters champion is the only owner of a green jacket permitted to remove it from the grounds of Augusta National, and only for a period of one year, at which point he comes back to defend his title.
  • An authentic 1960’s green jacket was recently discovered in a Houston thrift store’s donation box. The thrift store sold the esteemed jacket for an undisclosed amount.
  • On the open market, a genuine green jacket could bring in as much as $50,000.
  • Horton Smith’s jacket, awarded for his wins in 1934 and 1936, sold at auction in September 2013 for over $682,000. It was the highest price ever paid for a piece of golf memorabilia.

Firsts

  • The Masters was the first tournament to:
    • host a 72-hole competition over four days
    • be covered nationwide on radio
    • to use bleachers
    • use rope galleries
    • use private detectives to handle ticket sales and security
    • develop and use an on-course scoreboard
    • use the over/under par system (which is the same one we all use today.)
  • When it was televised for the first time in 1956, all CBS stations within a 200-mile radius of the club were blacked out from showing the tournament to help with ticket sales. The blackout was lifted in 1969.
  • In 1975, Lee Elder became the first African-American to play in the Masters.
  • Ron Townsend became the first African-American member in 1990.
  • Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore became the first female members in 2012.
  • As of this writing, a female golfer has yet to compete in a Masters tournament.
  • According to an Augusta caddie, one member liked to walk his dog on the course in the morning. When he was told he couldn’t do so because his dog was not a member, he resolved the problem by paying the guest fee — for his dog!

This year, the Masters will be held from April 7 to April 10. This 80th year celebration is expected to draw record crowds. Here’s how you can avoid all those people, but still get in the Masters spirit: Take advantage of our exceptional Masters Week Special at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee! Our course is the inspired vision of four-time Masters runner-up Tom Weiskopf and his renown design partner, Jay Morrish. Golf Week even awarded Harbor Club golf course as one of the “Top 4 Places to Play in the State of Georgia.” So during Master’s week plan a comfortable stay in Greensboro and eat, drink and play at Harbor Club. You’ll be glad you did.

  • State Income Tax: 1% (on income up to $750/individual, $1,000/joint) – 6% (on income over $7,000 individual, $10,000/joint). Social Security Income is exempt from state taxes. Even better, $65,000 of retirement income (including income from IRAs and 401Ks), is tax-exempt for a person who is age 65 and older. For couples in that age group, $130,000 of retirement income is exempt.
  • State Sales Tax: 4% (Note: Some Georgia cities may have additional sales taxes.)
  • Estate Tax/Inheritance Tax: None / None
  • Property Tax: Property tax collections are below the national average. Full-time residents qualify for home exemption and seniors may qualify for additional deductions. According to the Tax Foundation, Georgia’s state and local governments collected approximately $1050 per person in property taxes in 2012, which ranks 19th lowest nationally.

Georgia has a low cost of living Especially if you are from the west coast or the northeastern parts of the country, you’ll find the cost of living in Georgia to be almost shockingly friendly on your wallet. Consider the following:

  • Cost of living index is 91.9: According to Sperling’s, the national average is 100. With an index of only 91.9, Georgia scores well below that average, making it a very inexpensive place to live compared to other states.
  • Real estate prices are low: The value of a home is currently averaged at $142,700 in Georgia (according to Zillow.com), which is well under the current national average of $183,500. It’s important to note that median home prices can differ widely by amenities or area (such as homes located right on the coast as opposed to those that are located inland). And if you desire top-quality, luxury amenities (golf, pool, tennis, activities, etc.), know that you can get them much more affordably in Georgia.

Georgia’s culture, scenic terrain and travel options abound Georgia’s towns and cities cater well to retirees. The state is famous for its wonderful southern hospitality and incredibly rich history. With gorgeous mountains to the north, the beaches of the Atlantic to the east and multiple, large fresh-water lakes (like our very own Lake Oconee!), it meets the needs of many outdoor enthusiasts. Even if you love the excitement of city life, nearby Atlanta will have you covered. And if you love to travel, the Atlanta airport is one of the best and most efficient in the nation. What’s even better is that it is located less than 1.5 hours away from Harbor Club! With so many irresistible reasons to retire in Georgia, it would be worth your while to check it out. And while you’re here, be sure to stop by and visit us. We’d love to show you around! Who knows, you may just find your very own charming Georgia dream home to retire to, here at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee.

Delicious News From Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

Have you been to the Clubhouse Restaurant at Harbor Club lately for a meal? If not, you’re in for a real treat. Not only has our decor been refreshed, so has our menu, thanks much in part to our fantastic new Executive Chef, David Butler. You’ll find our delectable dishes better than ever!

David brings with him a wealth of admirable experience in the culinary industry, holding several highly regarded positions, from Chef De Cuisine, Sous Chef to Executive Chef. In those capacities, he has worked for several upscale resorts, including The Cloister at Sea Island, the Ritz Carlton at Amelia Island and the Lodge at Little St. Simons Island, among others.

David Butler began his culinary career as a teen when he worked during high school at The Butler House, in Macon, Georgia. He shared the name, as his grandparents owned the establishment. As he attended the University of Georgia, David then worked for various restaurants in Athens. He ultimately obtained his culinary arts degree from the renown Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.

You may have already noticed some pleasant changes at the restaurant. David is handling everything from staff training to food preparation to menu planning. …And speaking of the menu, we have David’s three brand new ones to share! The 10 Best Reasons to Live At Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

If you are lucky enough to live at Harbor Club at Lake Oconee, then you already know that it comes with tons of wonderful benefits. For those that are not quite as fortunate (yet!), here are the top reasons why you should consider taking up residence here ASAP:

  1. The Clubhouse Restaurant – Not only is the food delicious, it is prepared and served with care. Even better, our restaurant is super-convenient. Even if you need to grab dinner on the way home from work or grab breakfast on the way out on Sunday, we’ve got you covered!
  2. Award-winning Golf Course – We have a gorgeous Weiskopf/Morrish designed golf course that is the #4 place to play in Georgia, according to Golf Week magazine.
  3. Fun Social Events – Every month our social calendar is chock full of fun events and activities that residents and members have a blast at!
  4. Excellent Boating – Our community not only offers lakefront real estate opportunities, it also gives the unique ability to have direct access to Lake Oconee, without having to own lakefront property. Our new dry dock and  boathouse facility can handle all of your boating needs, from set-up to storage, making boat ownership better and easier than ever.
  5. Great Fishing – Of course, you can fish on Lake Oconee, which is known for the great Bass and Crappie, but did you know that our community has several large ponds that are stocked with fish? One way or another, you’re bound to go home with a prize fish, or at the very least some great tales to tell.
  6. Quick Hospital Access – Hopefully you rarely have the need for hospital services, but it’s nice to know that St. Mary’s is an excellent full service facility that is only 3 minutes from our entrance.
  7. Know your Neighbors– Harbor Club has 80% full-time residents, whereas our neighboring communities have as few as 20% full-time residents. Here, you can actually say “Hello Rob!” when you walk down the street, instead of an awkward “Hi” to a stranger. It also makes it a lot easier when you need to borrow that cup of sugar.
  8. Beautiful homes and homesites – When you drive through our community, you will not find “cookie-cutter” homes, where each looks exactly the same. We have many home types, from charming townhouses to luxury mansions, all with varying architectural styles and elevations customized to the site. This is especially true of our new in-house builder, Patriot Builders.
  9. Superb educational opportunities – Nearby Lake Oconee Academy has been awarded as a National Blue Ribbon School and one of the Top 50 Public Elementary Schools in the Nation. Don’t forget that the renown University of Georgia is located in nearby Athens!
  10. Fantastic Community Amenities – We’ve already mentioned the access to Lake Oconee, fishing, boating and golf, but also have a junior Olympic-sized pool, double lighted tennis courts, a well-appointed gym as well as fitness classes like Zumba and yoga. We also offer golf instruction and a nicely stocked golf shop. On top of all that, our community is secured with 24/7 gate access.

Convinced? Why not give us a call or stop by! We’d love to show you around and provide (beautiful) visual proof of how awesome it is to live here. See you soon!
