The Latest Home Trends: Elevate Your Harbor Club Home in 2025

2025 home trendsAs home design continues to evolve, 2025 is bringing a mix of timeless elegance and modern innovation. Whether you’re looking to refresh your space or planning a full-scale renovation, staying on top of the latest trends can help you create a home that’s both stylish and functional while boosting value. Here are some of the top home trends shaping interiors this year—perfect for enhancing your Harbor Club residence.

  1. Natural Elements & Organic Textures

Bringing the outdoors in is a major theme for 2025. Homeowners are incorporating raw materials like stone, wood, and rattan to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Think oak cabinetry, slate backsplashes, and linen upholstery—all designed to create a relaxed, nature-inspired aesthetic that pairs perfectly with Lake Oconee.

  1. Warm, Earthy Color Palettes

While neutrals remain popular, rich, earthy tones are making waves. Shades like terracotta, deep greens, and warm browns such as Pantone’s color of the year – Mocha Mousse – add depth and coziness, perfect for accent walls, furniture, or décor. Soft whites and creamy beiges also continue to dominate for a timeless, airy feel.

  1. Statement Lighting as Art

Lighting is no longer just functional—it’s a focal point. Oversized pendants, sculptural chandeliers, and vintage-inspired sconces are adding drama and personality to homes. In open-concept spaces, layered lighting helps create a cozy ambiance. New accessories like battery-powered scones and other upscale lighting ditch the cords for a streamlined aesthetic.

  1. Spa-Like Bathrooms

The bathroom is becoming more than just a necessity—it’s a retreat. Features like freestanding tubs, rainfall showers, and warm, textured tiles are creating a spa-like experience. Many homeowners are also incorporating smart technology, such as heated floors and ambient lighting, for a touch of luxury.

  1. Multi-Functional Spaces

Since 2020, there chas been an influx of people from Atlanta and other cities to Lake Oconee , as working from home has become the new norm. With more people working remotely, homes are adapting to provide flexible living. Stylish home offices, reading nooks, and hidden storage solutions are helping maximize space without compromising aesthetics. Custom built-ins and dual-purpose furniture make it easy to transition between work and leisure.

  1. Outdoor Living Expansions

At Harbor Club, lakeside living is a way of life—so it’s no surprise that outdoor spaces are a major design focus. Expanding patios, adding pergolas, and incorporating fire pits or outdoor kitchens are great ways to create year-round entertaining areas. Comfortable, weather-resistant furniture and layered lighting can make your backyard feel like an extension of your home. A popular pool feature is the infinity-edge pool, which creates the illusion of seamlessly merging with the stunning waters of Lake Oconee.

  1. Smart Home Integration

Technology continues to streamline daily life, with smart home automation becoming increasingly common. Voice-activated assistants, security systems, and energy-efficient smart thermostats are making homes more convenient, secure, and sustainable.

  1. Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

Eco-conscious design is on the rise, with homeowners seeking energy-efficient solutions like solar panels, LED lighting, and high-performance windows. Sustainable materials such as bamboo flooring and recycled glass countertops are also gaining popularity, offering both style and environmental benefits.

  1. Vintage & Timeless Design Mixes

Blending vintage charm with contemporary elements is a trend that continues to grow. Heirloom furniture, antique-inspired fixtures, and classic design elements like wainscoting or arched doorways create a home with character and warmth.

  1. Bold Kitchens with Personality

All-white kitchens are taking a backseat to bolder, more personalized designs. Darker hues, mixed materials, and statement backsplashes are bringing more warmth and uniqueness to the heart of the home. Open shelving, custom range hoods, and textured cabinetry are also making waves at the lake.

At Harbor Club, homes are more than just where you live—they’re a natural extension of the beautiful lakefront, golf, and vibrant social lifestyle, offering warmth, comfort, and a true sense of belonging. A Heartwarming Success: “Pets with Santa” Event Benefits Oconee Regional Humane Society

This year’s “Pets with Santa” event was a memorable celebration of community, compassion, and holiday spirit. With 32 families and over 50 pets in attendance, the event raised more than $1,000 to support the mission of the Oconee Regional Humane Society, helping fund their ongoing efforts to care for animals in need.

The day was filled with festive cheer as pet owners and their furry friends posed for photos with Santa, many dressed in adorable holiday outfits. Leigh Lofgren, the event’s photographer, skillfully captured each heartwarming moment, ensuring every family left with a cherished holiday memory.

A special thank you to Santa for bringing his jolly spirit and making this event even more magical. He was a true hit with the pets and their owners, patiently posing with every furry friend and ensuring each photo was picture-perfect!

What made the event even more special was its impact on the Oconee Regional Humane Society. The funds raised will directly support the organization’s vital work of rescuing, sheltering, and caring for animals in our local community. This year’s success was a beautiful reminder of how coming together can make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the event possible—from the volunteers who managed check-ins and kept everything running smoothly to the generous pet owners who participated and supported the cause. This event was a true reflection of the power of community.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Harbor Club resident and professional photographer Leigh Lofgren, not only for organizing such a fun and festive event but also for generously donating her time and photography expertise to ensure each pet had a picture-perfect moment with Santa.

We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who contributed to this year’s event’s success, and we can’t wait to see you all next year for another round of holiday magic with Pets with Santa!

Life at Harbor Club: A Heartfelt Journey of Community and Connection

Harbor Club real estate sales director Kathy Phillips with long-term resident Louise Hull

After 18 years of calling Harbor Club home, it’s safe to say that this community left an indelible mark on Louise Hull and her husband. Their story is one of discovery, connection, and cherished memories that began when they moved from Charlotte in 2006, following a two-year search for the perfect lakefront neighborhood.

For Louise and her husband, the decision to settle in Harbor Club was driven by a deep desire to be part of a real community—a neighborhood where full-time residents created a genuine sense of belonging. Unlike other nearby developments, where part-time residents often dominate, Harbor Club’s welcoming environment, where 85% of the residents live year-round, was precisely what they were searching for. It was the perfect fit!

“Harbor Club felt like a real neighborhood,” Louise recalls. “We wanted a place where people were here to stay, where you could build real relationships, and that’s exactly what we found.”

One of the couple’s most treasured experiences at Harbor Club was the sense of community that permeated every aspect of their lives. From impromptu gatherings at the Boathouse, where friends would bring lawn chairs and enjoy live music, to the warmth of friendships forged over nearly two decades, the bonds they formed have left a lasting impact.

“We absolutely love the Boathouse,” Louise says with a smile. “The music, the people—it was always such a good time. We made so many friends here, and I already miss them terribly.”

Over the years, Louise witnessed Harbor Club evolve and grow, bringing in new residents and expanding its amenities. From the Ladies League, where she knew nearly everyone, to the enhancement of the fitness center and the development of the Pickleball courts, the community has continually adapted to meet the needs of its residents.

“We even had our own ’80s Club,” Louise laughs, reflecting on the fun they had together. “But for any community to thrive, you have to welcome new people and make them feel at home. That’s what keeps Harbor Club vibrant and alive.”

The decision to sell their beloved home was not easy, especially when her husband’s health began to decline. But through it all, Kathy Phillips, Director of Sales at Harbor Club and a resident herself was there to offer unwavering support and guidance.

“Kathy was wonderful,” Louise says with gratitude. “She made an incredibly difficult time more manageable. From helping us list the house quickly to providing a support system when my husband went into assisted living, she was there every step of the way.”

Kathy’s assistance extended beyond the sale. She offered resources for an estate sale and even provided contacts for cleaning services. Managing the logistics of the sale with the involvement of Louise, her daughter, and her son, Kathy, helped keep everyone level-headed and focused.

As Louise reflects on her time at Harbor Club, she offers this advice to anyone considering making the community their home: “Get out and meet people! There are so many events and activities for everyone, whether you play golf or not. Make yourself available, join the Ladies League, or find other ways to connect. The friendships you’ll build here are worth it.”

For Louise and her husband, Harbor Club was more than just a place to live—it was a true home filled with love, laughter, and lifelong friendships. Though they didn’t plan on leaving, they are grateful for the 18 wonderful years they spent in this remarkable community.

Summer Gatherings and Unforgettable Moments

By: Kathy Phillips

At Harbor Club, we are looking forward to welcoming summer with fun gatherings and memorable moments as we embrace the exciting lake season ahead. With Memorial Day just around the corner, I’m excited to dive into a three-week celebration featuring tips for entertaining Southern style.

Week 1: Kitchen Comforts & Culinary Charms

Southern Kitchen ready for entertaining guests

The Kitchen is the heart of every home and the stage for culinary masterpieces. As you prepare to host your own gatherings this summer, consider these helpful tips:

• Efficient Layout: Keep your kitchen layout conducive to mingling amongst friends and family. Arrange seating areas or bar stools where guests can chat with the chef without getting in the way of meal prep.

• Ambient Lighting: Opt for warm, inviting lighting to create a cozy atmosphere (or embrace the natural sunlight for daytime parties!) Dimmable lights or candles can add a touch of elegance to your gatherings.

• Preparation is Key: Prep as much as you can ahead of time to minimize stress during the event. Chop ingredients, set the table, and pre-mix cocktails so you can enjoy the company of your guests without feeling overwhelmed.

Week 2: Memorial Day Homage

Cottage in Carriage Ridge at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee with American Flag on the front of the house

As we approach Memorial Day, Harbor Club is brimming with reverence and gratitude. This week, amidst the American flags and the solemn beauty of remembrance, we gather to pay homage to the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Here are some thoughtful ways to pay tribute while hosting your Patriotic Picnic:

• Patriotic Curb Appeal: Boost your home’s curb appeal with patriotic decorations like flags, bunting, or red, white, and blue flowerpots. A welcoming exterior sets the tone for your Memorial Day gathering and showcases your pride in the community and country.

• Memorial Garden Tribute: Create a memorial garden in your backyard as a tribute to fallen heroes. Plant red, white, and blue flowers, and consider adding a flagpole or plaque to honor those who have served. A serene outdoor space dedicated to remembrance can add a meaningful touch to your home.

• Outdoor Games with Patriotic Twist: Organize outdoor games and activities with a patriotic twist, such as a relay race with red, white, and blue obstacles, or a trivia game about the country’s history and symbols.

At Harbor Club, Memorial Day is not just a holiday—it’s a sacred opportunity to come together as a community, to honor the past, celebrate the present, and cherish the precious gift of freedom. So, as we raise our glasses in toast, let us also bow our heads in solemn remembrance, for it is because of their sacrifice that we are able to gather here today in peace and unity.

Week 3: Patio Parties & Sunset Soirees

Southern backyard porch with fire pit for entertaining at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

There’s something truly special about Southern-style homes and their curb appeal – those sprawling verandas where time seems to slow down, and the world feels just a little bit sweeter. This week, we’re trading our aprons for sun hats to embrace the art of patio and porch entertaining. Here are some tips to make the most of your outdoor entertaining space:

• Comfortable Seating: Invest in comfortable seating options like rocking chairs, porch swings, or cozy lounge chairs. Your guests will appreciate having a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the view.

• Decorative Touches: Add personal touches such as colorful throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and potted plants. Create a welcoming ambiance that reflects your personal style and invites guests to feel more at home.

• Scenic Lighting: Enhance the ambiance of your outdoor space by strategically placing outdoor lighting to highlight the scenic beauty around you. String lights, lanterns, or even solar-powered pathway lights can create a magical atmosphere as the sun sets and stars start to shine.

To conclude our series on Summer Gatherings and Unforgettable Moments at Harbor Club, we hope you’ve been inspired to make the most of this exciting lake season. From the heartwarming kitchen gatherings to the solemn Memorial Day tributes, and the enchanting patio parties, each moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories with friends and family. As you implement these tips and ideas, may your summer be filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful connections. Here’s to celebrating the beauty of summer at Harbor Club – a place where every gathering becomes a cherished moment in time. Cheers to a fantastic season ahead!

5 Expert Tips to Add Value to Your Home

By: Kathy Philips, Director of Sales

In the current competitive Lake Oconee real estate market, enhancing the value of your home is not only a wise investment, but it also positions your property favorably for future resale opportunities. As your dedicated realtor, I am excited to share the top 5 ideas you can implement to add more value to your home to help you maximize the potential of your property. Whether you’re considering selling in the near future or want to invest in your property, these tips will empower you to make informed decisions and elevate the appeal of your home.

#5: Upgrade Light Fixtures

Enhancing your home with modern and stylish light fixtures can significantly elevate its appeal and create a more captivating atmosphere. Upgraded fixtures not only enhance the ambiance of your living spaces but also add a touch of sophistication to your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers and creating a more enjoyable living environment for you and your family.

#4: Upgrade Flooring

Upgrading your flooring from carpet to hardwood or updating tile not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also offers several practical benefits. Hardwood floors are known for their durability, timeless elegance, and ability to increase a property’s perceived value. Similarly, modern and well-maintained tile flooring can elevate the overall look and feel of your home, especially in high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Investing in quality materials and professional installation can set your home apart in the market, attracting potential buyers seeking a mix of luxury and functionality. Additionally, updated flooring contributes to easier maintenance and improved air quality and can be a key factor in buyers’ decision-making process when comparing properties.

#3: Renovate Bathrooms

Modern, well-designed bathrooms not only enhance the visual appeal of your property but also offer practical convenience and luxury, making your home more attractive to potential buyers. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy a spa-like bathroom. Here are a couple of impactful ways to improve your bathrooms:

Upgrade Fixtures and Finishes: Installing modern, high-quality fixtures and finishes, such as faucets, showerheads, and hardware, can instantly elevate the look and feel of your bathrooms. Opting for elegant, water-efficient fixtures not only adds visual appeal but also contributes to sustainability, an increasingly important consideration for many homebuyers.

Separate Tub and Shower: Introducing a separate tub and shower configuration, possibly with a freestanding tub, can add a luxurious and spa-like feel to the bathroom.

Enhance Functional Space: To maximize the functional space in your bathrooms, consider reconfiguring the layout or adding storage solutions.

By renovating your bathrooms, you’re not only investing in the comfort and satisfaction of your current home for yourself to enjoy but also positioning your home as a desirable and valuable asset in the eyes of potential buyers.

#2: Update Your Kitchen

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home and a focal point for potential buyers. Here are some impactful ways to update your kitchen without a complete renovation:

Cabinet Refresh: Consider repainting or refinishing your cabinets for a cost-effective transformation. Upgrading the hardware can also make a noticeable difference in the overall look.

New Countertops: Investing in new countertops can instantly elevate the aesthetics of your kitchen. Options like quartz and butcher block offer durability and timeless appeal.

Modernize Appliances: Updating old appliances with energy-efficient and stainless-steel models can enhance both the visual appeal and functionality of your kitchen.

Statement Backsplash: Adding a stylish and eye-catching backsplash can breathe new life into your kitchen space, creating a focal point that enhances the overall design.

Lighting Makeover: Introducing modern and strategically placed lighting fixtures can brighten up your kitchen and create an inviting atmosphere.

By taking these steps to update your kitchen, you can significantly enhance the overall appeal, functionality, and value of your home.

#1: Embrace Open Concept Living

In the quest to elevate the value of your home, embracing an open-concept design is a timeless choice that resonates with modern homebuyers. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:

Brighter Space

Access to natural light in a home is crucial for creating a welcoming space—not to mention it’s necessary for mental health (and your plants!). In traditional, separated floor plans, access to natural light could be limited by walls. An open floor plan removes those barriers, instantly carrying natural light throughout the entire space.

Enhanced Sociability

Of course, with an open floor plan, there is nowhere to hide! Without the walls blocking your line of sight, you can easily watch the kids, have a conversation without yelling, and create the perfect entertainment space.

Flexibility with Design and Décor

Motivated buyers want to make the most of their investment and live in a home that suits their lifestyle. So, open floor plans let homeowners get creative with their furniture and decorations. When there are fewer walls, people can reconfigure areas for different purposes within minutes.

FACT: Include a fireplace, hardwood floors, or ceiling beams to increase your asking price even more.

As we strive to create living spaces that stand the test of time, the open-concept layout emerges as a practical solution for enhancing accessibility and comfort in your home.

Reflecting on Joy at Harbor Club

As the holiday season arrives, our hearts are brimming with warmth and joy at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee. We find ourselves pausing to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared throughout the year. It’s been a remarkable 12 months at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee, filled with happiness, growth, and a sense of community that continues to blossom. As we gather to celebrate the holidays, let’s take a moment to revisit some of the highlights from this past year.

#1 Growing community = new friends and new neighbors

Harbor Club on Lake Oconee is a thriving and dynamic community. The fact that there are currently over 40 homes under construction and an additional 60 approved new builds speaks volumes about its popularity and desirability among homebuyers. Being part of a warm, growing golf and lake community provides our residents with a beautiful environment full of friendly neighbors – over 80% of which are full-time. Plus, there’s a host of amenities that enhance their overall quality of life. And since Harbor Club is debt-free, residents are reassured of a long-term, stable future.

#2 Incredible member events

Harbor Club hosts several events and activities throughout the year, much to the job of our residents and members. Trivia and Music Game Show nights continue to be a big draw, as do many golf tournaments. There were 22 golf events in October and 17 in November, including Collegiate, Junior, and GSGA, not to mention our popular Junior Golf Camp each summer. We’re proud to be the only golf course in Georgia’s Lake Country that allows this incredible caliber of outside play. Of course, holidays are great fun at Harbor Club, too. We had parties for Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Fourth of July (which also included a festive golf cart parade.) We had an amazing turnout for our annual Halloween celebration and trick-or-treating – some say it was the biggest in Harbor Club’s history. Our Christmas activities include our ever-popular Breakfast with Santa and Tacky Sweater Party. Harbor Club Real Estate also sponsored two fun events this year: a Shred Day and a Pickleball Tournament. Our Ladies League enjoyed multiple fun gatherings, and we had private wine dinners, too. Fitness classes now include 15 weekly options, helping keep everyone happy and healthy.

#3 We’ve grown our team

Harbor Club was and continues to be busy adding new, fantastic people to our hardworking team. We’re thankful for all who have joined our ranks, including Courtney Barnett, General Manager of Clubhouse Restaurant (we have a blog post about her coming soon!), a new Sales Coordinator, Brooke Chandler, and a new Wedding and Event Coordinator, Gilly Francis.

#4 Unveiled a new website

HarborClub.com got a fantastic facelift earlier this year. Much hard work and effort was put into its design and creation, and we are grateful to everyone involved – especially the many Harbor Club residents who pitched in and are featured throughout the site.

#5 Awarded Best Clubhouse from Golf Lake Oconee

We are thrilled that Harbor Club on Lake Oconee recently won the Golf Lake Oconee Award for Best Clubhouse. Our clubhouse is a stunning example of Southern architecture, and it offers a variety of amenities to enjoy before, during, and after your round of golf. We’re so honored to receive this GLOEE (Golf Lake OconEE) award, and we thank all who voted for us.

#6 Reintroduced a new Discovery Experience

Our new Discovery Experience offers the perfect way to see and learn more about our award-winning golf and lake community. When you schedule a Discovery Experience, you’ll play golf, enjoy a community tour, see beautiful new homes, meet lovely people, and enjoy a fantastic lunch with new friends.

To those who have already discovered the enchantment of Harbor Club, we send festive, heartfelt wishes to you and your loved ones. We extend warm greetings to everyone in and around our community. May your days be filled with laughter, your homes with love, and your hearts with the season’s magic. Happy holidays from all of us at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee.

Downsizing Your Home? 7 Tips to Get You Started

We at Harbor Club Real Estate know that downsizing your home can be liberating and challenging. Whether you’re an empty nester interested in optimizing your living space or seeking a more minimalist lifestyle, purging and organizing are crucial steps toward achieving your goals. For those who currently live at Lake Oconee or soon plan to, here are some helpful tips that make the downsizing process smoother and more manageable.

Start with a plan

Before diving into the decluttering process, create a plan. Start by identifying the reasons for downsizing, setting realistic goals, and establishing a timeline. Consider which rooms or areas need the most attention and prioritize those accordingly. Having a clear plan helps you stay focused and motivated throughout the process.

Embrace the three-box method

An effective strategy for decluttering is the three-box method. Have one box each for keep, donate/sell, and discard. Designate items into one of these categories as you go through each room. Be honest about each item’s necessity, functionality, and sentimental value.

Assess sentimental items

Parting with sentimental items can be emotionally challenging. To make it easier, consider taking photos of sentimental objects before letting them go. This way, you can preserve the memories without the physical clutter. Another idea is to limit yourself to a certain number of sentimental items, making you prioritize and keep only the most meaningful ones.

Tackle one room at a time

Breaking the downsizing process into smaller, more manageable tasks makes it less overwhelming. Focus on only one room at a time, starting with less emotionally charged areas like storage spaces or guest rooms. As you make progress, you’ll build momentum and confidence to tackle more challenging spaces, such as the living room or bedrooms.

Digitize paperwork and photos

Paper clutter accumulates quickly, especially important documents and old photos. Invest time digitizing paperwork and photos to save space and reduce physical clutter. Scan important documents and store them securely on a cloud service. For photographs, consider creating digital albums or backing them up online. This helps declutter your living space while preserving precious memories in a modern, accessible format.

Maximize storage solutions

Invest in multi-functional furniture that provides hidden storage spaces. An ottoman is a great place to store blankets and pillows. Keep things tidy with shelves and wall-mounted organizers. Consider storage bins and baskets to keep smaller items organized and easily accessible. The goal is to optimize your living space while maintaining a clean and clutter-free environment.

Adopt a minimalist mindset

As you declutter and organize, ask yourself if each item serves a purpose or brings you joy. Focus on quality over quantity, keeping only what adds value to your life. Letting go of excess belongings often feels liberating and provides a fresh start.

Downsizing is a journey, not a destination, and each step you take brings you closer to a more fulfilling and manageable lifestyle. And if it’s still different from what you envisioned, trust the expertise of Harbor Club Real Estate to find your perfect, streamlined living space. 10 Easy Holiday Decorating Ideas

The holiday season is approaching, and there’s no better way to embrace the festive spirit than by decorating your home for upcoming celebrations. While fancy decorations are impressive, you don’t need to spend much time or money to create a cozy and cheerful holiday atmosphere. Here are 10 easy holiday decorating ideas that will make your home feel warm, inviting, and full of holiday cheer.

Deck the halls with garland

One of the simplest and most versatile decorations for the holidays is garland. You can drape it along staircases, over doorways, or across mantels. Opt for traditional evergreens for a classic look, or go for something unique like pinecone or berry garland for a modern twist. Add some bows and a string of lights to create a magical, twinkling effect.

DIY ornaments

Get crafty by making your own ornaments. This is an excellent way to add a personal touch to your tree and engage the whole family in a creative project. Gather supplies like clear glass ornaments, acrylic paints, glitter, and ribbons, and let your imagination run wild. A project like this could start a fun family tradition, especially if kids are involved.

Festive wreaths

Wreaths are a quintessential holiday decoration, and they’re incredibly easy to make (or buy.) Hang them on your front door, above the fireplace, or even in your windows. You can choose traditional evergreen wreaths or experiment with other materials like cinnamon sticks, burlap, or dried citrus slices.

Candles and candle holders

Candles create a warm and cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for the holidays. Place festive candles and candle holders on your dining table or mantel, or use them as a centerpiece. Scented candles with fragrances like cinnamon, pine, or gingerbread enhance the holiday ambiance even more.

Holiday lights

Brighten up your home by adding strings of holiday lights. You can add them to your tree, display them on your fireplace mantle, wrap them around staircase railings, or outline your windows to create a welcoming glow. Today’s LED lights are energy-efficient and come in many colors and styles.

Holiday pillows and throws

Update your living room decor by swapping your regular pillows and throws with holiday-themed ones. These soft furnishings can instantly transform the ambiance in your home and provide extra comfort for family and guests.

Seasonal greenery

Incorporate natural elements into your holiday decor by displaying poinsettias, holly branches, or rosemary plants shaped like small conical trees. These green touches infuse your home with freshness and a connection to nature.

Advent calendars

Advent calendars are all the rage nowadays and a fun way to countdown to Santa’s arrival. There are lots of fantastic options for both kids and adults. You can purchase ready-made ones or create your own with small treats or inspirational messages hidden behind each numbered door or pocket.

Nutcrackers and figurines

Set up a collection of nutcrackers or holiday figurines on a side table, bookshelf, or mantel. Santas, nativities, reindeer, and snowmen are great options. These charming characters add a touch of whimsy and nostalgia to your home.

Twinkling table centerpiece

Dress up your dining table with a beautiful and easy centerpiece. Place a decorative tray or a mirrored plate in the center and arrange glass ornaments, pinecones, candles, or a mini-string of battery-operated lights for an elegant, festive display.

Holiday decorating doesn’t have to be a daunting or expensive task. With these fun ideas, you’ll easily create a warm and inviting atmosphere that captures the true spirit of the season. So, gather your loved ones, make some cocktails, put on some festive music, and let your creativity shine as you transform your home into a merry wonderland. From all of us at Harbor Club, we wish you happy decorating and joyous holidays.

Fall Decorating Tips That Bring Southern Charm

Pumpkin spice greetings to all fall enthusiasts. With the autumn season now upon us, it’s time to infuse our homes with the warm hues and cozy vibes this season brings. To get in the spirit, here are some fantastic fall decorating tips and trends to spruce up your home in true Southern style.

Touchdown Tailgating: A College Football-Inspired Fall Decor Tip

In the South, fall means one crucial thing: college football season. So, why not integrate your passion for the game into your fall decor? Incorporate your favorite team’s colors in throw pillows, blankets, or decorative accents throughout your home. Create a spirited atmosphere by hanging a team-themed wreath on your front door and displaying framed photos of your favorite game day memories. Tailgating isn’t just for the stadium—bring the fun home and let your home cheer for your favorite team.

Harvest Gatherings: A Rustic Fall Decor Tip

Embrace the harvest season by incorporating rustic elements into your fall decor. Arrange a charming table setting with earth-toned placemats, burlap runners, and wooden chargers to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Fill a decorative bowl with seasonal fruits like apples, pears, or mini pumpkins for a pop of color and a nod to the bounties of autumn. Finish off the look with a bouquet of fall blooms and foliage in a textured vase as the centerpiece. The rustic vibe will bring a new level of warmth to your fall gatherings.

Tee Time Traditions: A Golf-Inspired Fall Decor Tip

Golf is integral to life here at Harbor Club, a sport that beautifully complements the fall season. Add golf-inspired elements into your decor that pay homage to this beloved pastime—display golf-themed artwork or vintage clubs as wall accents. Utilize golf balls or tees in glass jars for a unique centerpiece, and use attractive golf-themed coasters on your coffee table. For a fun conversation starter, add a few small autumnal decorations to your golf cart.

Lakeside Serenity: A Fall Decor Tip for Lovers of “Lake Life”

Living at Lake Oconee is a privilege we cherish year-round. Embrace the beauty of lake life in your fall decor by bringing nature indoors. Incorporate elements like driftwood, nautical accents, and muted blue hues in your decorations. Fill glass vases with pinecones, acorns, and seasonal flowers for autumnal elegance. Add a few orange-hued lanterns and cinnamon-scented candles to capture lakeside evenings’ tranquil and cozy ambiance. If you have a fire pit by the lake, create a welcoming space to enjoy the crisp fall evenings with friends and family. Roast marshmallows and make smores together. Cuddle under soft blankets, share stories, and relish the serene beauty of Lake Oconee while warming your feet by the fire.

With these fall decorating tips, your home at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee will exude the perfect blend of Southern warmth and seasonal charm. Happy decorating, and cheers to a fantastic autumn at Harbor Club. Learn more about our award-winning lake and golf community.

Millennial Homebuyers: How They’re Driving Demand in the Housing Market

millennials.jpg

Millennials. You know who they are – they’re the ones born between 1981 and 1996. They’re considered challengers, change-makers, boundary-pushers, and influencers. They love technology, using every bit of it to their advantage while challenging the status quo. They’re also entering a new stage of life in which they’re starting families and accumulating wealth.

With all these factors in mind, it’s not surprising that Millenials made up nearly half of all U.S. homebuyers (43%) in 2021, up from 37% just one year earlier.

Previously known as the “rent generation,” Millennials now represent eager, nimble, savvy homebuyers, despite all the uncertain economic factors and surging student loan debt. So what’s feeding their appetite to achieve homeownership? Here are some factors:

Millennials see opportunity

Where older generations may see challenges, Millennials often see opportunity and potential. They can see prospects for building wealth, whereas others are apprehensive. Since they are less risk-averse, Millenials have no problem purchasing a home sight unseen, especially in a competitive housing market. Plus, they’re incredibly resilient and enjoy finding creative ways to problem-solve and get what they want.

Millennials love technology

Millennials are innately in tune with tech trends, even as technology rapidly evolves. So when it comes to home buying, they leverage things like virtual tours, digital appraisal scheduling, virtual inspections, remote notary services, and digital closings. Plus, they prefer receiving, reviewing, and signing documents electronically instead of using “old-school” pen and paper.

Millennials are moving away from cities

The majority of Millennials are moving away from major cities. Many are migrating South and West to areas that offer warmer weather and access to outdoor activities, not to mention a lot more bang for their buck. They see nothing wrong with living in a vibrant, more affordable suburb outside of the city. They’re seeking out family-friendly neighborhoods that better fit their lifestyles and personalities. So, communities in a great location, with excellent schools, access to a top-notch airport, and within a decent commuting distance (for the rare times they go into the office) are key factors for Millennial homebuyers.

What Millenials want in a home

More than anything, Millennials want their home to serve as a sanctuary, not a source of stress. A quality-built, polished home that is easy to maintain is highly ideal (especially if yard maintenance is included, like at The Enclave at Heron Ridge and our Cottage Series homes.) They lean toward newer, move-in-ready houses with open concept floor plans and spaces that serve multiple purposes. They enjoy beautiful, simple, easy-care materials and neutral colors, making decorating a cinch. Updated appliances and built-in smart home technologies that monitor and manage the home’s systems get high marks. Furthermore, Millennials have no qualms about investing in energy-efficient options that help improve their overall energy consumption while reducing their carbon footprint.

Many Millenials work from home

Not surprisingly, the coronavirus pandemic broadened digital options over the past few years. Tech-savvy Millennials continue to embrace the trend. A great majority of Millennials work from home, allowing them to essentially work from anywhere they wish. They also take on more online freelancing opportunities than other generations, so homes with more office space and fast, reliable internet connections are a must.

Millennials like working with knowledgeable experts

Millennials are very detail-oriented and seek helpful information, data, and statistics to make better, more informed decisions. They admire and enjoy working with experts. That’s why they happily rely on seasoned real estate professionals to help guide them through the home buying journey.

Whether you’re a Millennial or not and are seeking invaluable real estate guidance, we’re happy to help – especially if you’re looking for a home near Atlanta in Georgia’s Lake Country. Our Director of Sales, Kathy Phillips, would love to find the perfect place for you and your family.

Harbor Club Featured in Homefinder Magazine

homefinder.png

We’re thrilled to share that our Magnolia plan model home made the front cover of the June issue of Homefinder Magazine. As Georgia lake country’s premier real estate guide, this issue of Homefinder also includes a two-page spread highlighting our community and several of our newest homes currently available.

If you didn’t already receive a copy of the magazine in your local newspaper, you can easily browse it online. Meanwhile, here’s more information about the model home, the neighborhood, the builder, and our Southern Living-Inspired Community.

The home – The Magnolia

This Magnolia plan model home features a master and secondary bedroom on the main and an additional bonus/bedroom upstairs. The great room has a beautiful fireplace and flows perfectly into the open kitchen, oversized island, and eating area. The owner’s suite and bath are tranquil and spacious. The bathroom has split vanities as well as a stepless shower leading to a large walk-in closet. The main level patio is covered with an outdoor fireplace. The Magnolia plan has several different options available to customize any way you wish.

The neighborhood – The Enclave at Heron Ridge

The Magnolia model home is located in Harbor Club’s newest neighborhood, The Enclave at Heron Ridge. It features 63 beautifully crafted 3-, 3.5- and 4-bedroom ranch-style homes with 2 or 2.5 baths. Sizes range from 2,300 to 2,700 square feet, and prices start in the low $400s. The houses are constructed and designed for improved accessibility and easy, first-floor living without sacrificing luxury. Each home features age-in-place standards like step-free access, wide doorways, zero-entry tile showers with bench seats, raised-height vanities, lever handles on interior doors, and more. Upgraded trim and appliances are standard with gas stoves, gas logs, and granite countertops, to name a few. One of the best features is that landscape maintenance is included, making it ideal for anyone who prefers to avoid lawn mowing and hedge trimming.

The builder – Southvine Homes

The Enclave at Heron Ridge homes are built by the distinctive builder, Southvine Homes. The company is well-known as a family-owned and operated home builder with a respected reputation as one of Georgia’s most trusted home building companies. Their heartwarming tagline is: “Not Simply Building Homes, Building Relationships.” The founders, Alex and Courtney Tetterton, have an impressive 35+ years of home construction experience.

Remote Work Drives Homebuyers to Harbor Club

harbor-club.jpg

The massive shift to remote work has changed how Americans get work done and where they do it. Due to the recent coronavirus pandemic, working from home is now a common and widely accepted practice. Employers realize that workers are capable of thriving outside of an office.

And according to a Gallup poll, half of Americans who are currently working remotely said they plan to continue to do so even after all business restrictions are lifted.

Working remotely offers several unique opportunities — including better choices as to where to live. Those who work from home no longer have to worry about a lengthy, arduous commute. For many, their “commute” is simply walking from the breakfast table to their home office. They are comfortably attired, have a hot coffee in hand, and are ready to conquer the day. It certainly makes the dream of homeownership more appealing and has increased interest in suburban living. Today’s wise homebuyers are investing in their dream homes now rather than later. The stellar home sales in Harbor Club last year speak to that and show that buyers see the value of investing in a debt-free, amenity-rich golf and lake community like ours. Today’s buyers realize they don’t have to wait to obtain their vacation or retirement home. Instead, they’re seeking a home that better fits their newfound needs.

And what are those needs? We’ve found that many are fleeing big cities in search of more peaceful environments. They want a comfortable retreat that offers safety, privacy, and security. But they also require high-speed internet access and a robust tech infrastructure throughout their house – especially in their well-appointed home offices.

So, why not work from home with a gorgeous view of Lake Oconee, a pristine golf course, peaceful woods, or a tranquil pond? Why not enjoy your lunch break like never before, with access to tons of fantastic amenities right outside your door? Many have done precisely that at Harbor Club and are very glad they did.

Our friendly, tight-knit neighborhood at Harbor Club welcomes you to experience this new lifestyle for yourself. Visit, and you’ll see that our Southern Living-Inspired Community is a gorgeous place where fresh air, woods, and green space abound. Factor in the accessibility and beauty of Lake Oconee, and you’ll discover plenty of ways to enjoy the safety and the serenity of the outdoors. Go for a walk, hike, swim, or boat ride. Play championship golf, tennis, or pickleball. Take your pup to the dog park or grab a delicious meal at The Clubhouse or The Boathouse Restaurants. It’s all within easy reach. Whether you work remotely or not, we’d love to introduce you to what life could be like for you at Harbor Club. Don’t wait. Let’s schedule your private tour today.

Spring Is the Season of New Beginnings at Harbor Club

spring.jpg

Spring is the time of plans and projects.” — Leo Tolstoy

Springtime is one of the best times at Harbor Club. It’s the season of new beginnings – a time to plan and start fun projects. Flowers are in bloom, and all of Lake Country is flourishing with new life. So whether you’re planning a memorable wedding, a fantastic golf experience, a gorgeous garden, a fun boating adventure, or a savvy real estate transaction, we’ve got helpful tips for you.

Lake Oconee wedding venues abound

With the warm weather we’ve been having, it feels like spring has already sprung. Love is certainly in the air, especially since we just celebrated Valentine’s Day too. And with so many sweethearts who were lucky enough to get engaged recently, several are strategizing the best place to celebrate their big day. If Lake Oconee wedding venues are on the list of options, here’s why Harbor Club can be the perfect place.

Masters Week golf specials are in full swing

Masters Week around the Augusta area offers a unique opportunity for visiting golfers: the chance to play some fantastic tracks – some of which are designed by legendary Masters champions themselves. Take our course, Harbor Club on Lake Oconee, for example. Designed by Tom Weiskopf (a four-time Masters runner-up himself) and Jay Morrish, it winds through wooded hillsides, skirts four creeks, and touches upon Georgia’s second-largest lake six times. The best part? You’re invited to experience golf at Harbor Club during Masters Week. So start planning your visit today – and consider making it a new, fun, annual getaway.

Harbor Club’s A1/A4 bentgrass greens dominate in spring

Spring is one of the best times to enjoy golf at Harbor Club. Whether you get to enjoy our Masters Week golf specials or not, anytime in spring is a great time to play. Our Penn A-1 / Penn A-4 creeping bentgrass turf is a cool-season grass that thrives from October through May. When asked about Harbor Club’s greens, our head golf pro, Keith Kelly, shared this fascinating fact with Pete Pappas (@pgapappas) on Instagram: “They’re A1/A4 bentgrass greens. They’re the same thing that’s at Augusta National. We don’t quite have the SubAir systems that they do, but they are very nice greens. In the spring and fall, they generally run anywhere from 13 to 15, depending on how firm our superintendent decides to make them. In the summertime, we slow them down a little bit to make them survive, but they’re still usually running between 11 and 12.

Plant perennials in spring for a flower-filled Georgia summer

Having a beautiful landscape doesn’t have to be a chore. Enjoying colorful blooms from spring through fall is possible, especially since we live in a wonderfully temperate climate. We’re sharing five pretty perennial plants that are easy to grow and maintain. Best of all, you get to enjoy them year over year. So why not plant a few? Once you see the pretty results, you’ll be glad you did.f

Get your boat ready for the best in lake life

Spring is the time to get your boat ship-shape so you can thoroughly enjoy being out on Lake Oconee without the maintenance hassles. Mind you, we have the advantage of having our very knowledgeable marina manager, Jerry Cash, and his team available at The Boathouse Marina to efficiently and effectively get your boat out of dry storage and back on the lake. But if you’d like to get your boat lake-worthy on your own, here are some helpful tips.

Spring is house-hunting (and selling) season

Spring is widely known as the season to buy and sell homes. People are enthusiastic about hunting for a new, amazing place to live. More importantly, it’s a critical time for transitioning kids from one school to another. Many families typically hurry to buy a new home in the spring, settle in during the summer, then have their kids ready to start at a new school in the fall. If you’re a home buyer, here’s how to make a winning offer. And considering today’s incredible home prices, you may be wondering about selling. If so, here’s how to determine if now is a good time to list your home. Whether you’re buying or selling, our friendly and knowledgeable Harbor Club real estate team makes it an easy process, from consultation to contract to close.

If you’re curious to learn more about Harbor Club, get in touch. We’d love to send you some information or, better yet, give you an exclusive tour of the neighborhood. Spring is an incredible time to experience our Southern Living Inspired Community, so let’s start planning your visit today.

Planning Your Lake Oconee Wedding – Top Tips

lake-oconee-wedding.jpeg

The pandemic postponed plenty of weddings over the past couple of years. As a result, wedding vendors and planners throughout the U.S. report record numbers of bookings through 2024. And according to The Wedding Report, nearly 2.5 million of them are scheduled to take place in 2022 — a record high number. So what must you know if you’re planning a Lake Oconee wedding in the next couple of years? Here are tips to make yours an epic event:

Book early

Do you have a specific date in mind for your big day? If so, book it at least nine to 12 months in advance. On the other hand, if you’re flexible about the date, you can let the availability of your favorite venue help make your decision. Keep in mind that availability is dependent on other factors like location, time of year, popularity, and more. If you’re planning a summer wedding, which is a busy time for events, you’ll want to book your favorite date and venue at least a year in advance.

…but avoid booking too early

Because of all the commotion around postponed weddings, some people try to book dates way too far in advance. Booking a wedding date that’s five years away is too early. Booking a venue before you’re even engaged is too. A knowledgeable, seasoned wedding planner can help do all the planning and logistics for you. Plus, they have the power to get everything on your wedding wishlist, all at the right time and in the right place.

Be flexible

Many weddings were outdoor events in 2021, and not just because of the fantastic weather here in Georgia. Facilities that offer beautiful, open-air venues helped avoid COVID-19 restrictions while continuing to provide a safer option for family and friends. And if the weather turns poor, it’s best to book a venue that can offer the shelter of a just-as-nice backup site on the premises. The opposite is also true – having an outdoor venue that fits all your guests if pandemic restrictions prohibit your indoor event is a reassuring thought. Venues (like ours) that offer much flexibility are key to a successful event.

Other Considerations

Keep in mind the time needed to handle all the other details and arrangements. For example, is your venue handling the food catering, or do you need to book that separately? What about entertainment, transportation, and accommodations? Most top-notch DJs, photographers, florists, and cake-bakers are booked out at least six months in advance, so schedule those early if you have favorites.

Once you book the venue for your wedding ceremony and reception, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Since you’ve locked in your date, it’ll be much easier to plan everything else. At Harbor Club, we’re seeing plenty of indicators that wedding season is getting into full swing. If you’re researching Lake Oconee wedding venues, you should definitely have it at one of ours. Plus, Harbor Club is also a great place to enjoy pre-wedding activities — keeping everyone happily occupied on the “morning of” the big day. Give us a call and schedule a tour. You’ll soon see that we have both the team and the scenes of your wedding dreams.

Happiest of Holidays From Harbor Club

happy-holidays.jpeg

As 2021 winds to a close, we are reflecting on all we have to be grateful for here at Harbor Club. We take great pride in being the only Southern Living Inspired Community in the beautiful state of Georgia. And we know it “takes a village” to accomplish all that we have over the years. It’s our incredible team, residents, and members that make Harbor Club so special. But for this year, and in no particular order, here are some of the top highlights:

Boathouse success

Under the knowledgeable direction of Tim Curry, our fantastic new Boathouse Restaurant Manager, we carefully opened our famed eatery on Lake Oconee this past May. We hired a top-notch team that did a great job of serving you. And it was a joy to bring back our free summer concert series. The Boathouse had an excellent eighth summer season because of everyone’s hard work, and of course, your patronage. We’re incredibly appreciative to all those who indulged in delicious meals, bought items from the store, purchased fuel, or stored their boat at the marina. We thank you.

Facebook milestone of over 20k followers

We’re proud that so many people follow and enjoy the updates on our Facebook page. You’ll find that our community has an excellent rating on Facebook too. As of this writing, we have a 4.8 out of 5-star rating. Those reviews are based on the opinions of over 89 people who graciously took the time to write about us. The latest review (from Terence Callahan) states, “Harbor Club on Lake Oconee was a course that was on my bucket list and I was glad I was able to check it off this weekend. One of the most beautiful courses I played. Can’t wait to go back again.

Golf was more popular than ever in 2021

Our Weiskopf/Morrish-designed golf course was busy in 2021. Our Golf Pro, Keith Kelly, shared this interesting fact: “In July alone, we did 3962 rounds. Before COVID, we were lucky to do 1800 rounds in July.” Our team did a fantastic job keeping up with the increased demand, making each round enjoyable for everyone who played here. Also, the Master’s Tournament got back on its regular schedule, and enthusiasts enjoyed our Master’s Week golf specials. Of course, it helps that our course ranks #4 on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia too.

Don Forchilli joins the Harbor Club team

This past fall, we had the pleasure of adding Don Forchilli to our team as the new Membership Director. He brings over 40 years of hospitality experience with him, making him a great “people person.” He’s as friendly as they come, and he’d love to get to know you. So if you ever want to learn more about Harbor Club golf memberships or would simply like to chat, Don is there for you.

Harbor Club home sales soared

With so many people continuing to work from home this year, life in resort-style communities became a bigger asset than ever. Many flocked to Harbor Club to enjoy our golf and lake community’s amenity-rich, fun-filled lifestyle. Our homes continue to sell faster than we’re building them. Fortunately, our distinctive home builders are doing an amazing job of keeping up with the demand — all without compromising on luxury or quality. (See our real estate listings for current opportunities.)

We’re thankful to have had such a great year, and we hope yours has been just as good, if not better. We appreciate you more than you know. From our family to yours, we wish you a wonderful holiday season full of merry-making and joy. Cheers to great things happening in the new year.

PS – If you’re interested in learning more about Harbor Club, we’d love to chat with you and plan for your personalized, exclusive visit. Get in touch today.

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup (8 ounces) tequila, chilled

Ice, for serving (try clear ice!)

For the rim: Old Bay seasoning (purchased or homemade) or chili powder, kosher salt

For the garnish: celery stalk, lime wedge, pickled pepper or jalapeno, cocktail onion (use cocktail picks if desired)

Instructions

  • If time allows, chill the tomato juice and tequila. Shake the tomato juice before pouring.
  • In a large cocktail shaker, combine the tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, hot sauce, celery salt, and black pepper. Shake well to combine (without ice). Strain into a quart mason jar or small pitcher.
  • Optional: If time, chill at least 1 hour or overnight for the best flavor. (Or, make ahead and store up to 1 week.) But you also can serve right away!
  • To serve, place a mixture of roughly half kosher salt and half Old Bay seasoning (or chili powder) on a plate. Cut a notch in a lime wedge, then run it around the rim of a glass. Dip the edge of the rim into a plate of salt.
  • To each glass, add 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of tequila and 1/2 cup of Bloody Maria mix and stir gently to combine. Fill the glass with ice and add the garnishes. Squeeze in the lime wedge before serving.

Place Cards: Clever Ideas for Entertaining

gather.jpeg

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! And now that we’re joyfully gathering once again, we’d like to share some clever place card ideas for all those who love entertaining. Being a Southern Living Inspired Community, we’re all about creating warm environments that foster friendly gatherings, interactions, and celebrations. So whether you’re having people over for the holidays or any other special event, try some of these fun place card ideas to make your tabletop terrific.

Scrabble tiles

Do you have an old Scrabble board game lying around? Here’s a fun way to use it for more than your impressive vocabulary words. Use the tiles and the racks to spell out your guest’s name at each place setting.

Pretty as a picture

Take a look at your guest’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram. Find an attractive photo of them, or better yet, one of you and that person together. Print it out and neatly write their name underneath. Place a folded napkin on the plate, with the photo arranged neatly on top of that. Or, if you have the table space, put the picture in a small frame.

Fun foods

Write your guest’s name on a small, triangular-shaped piece of construction paper and tape it to the top of a toothpick, much like a flag. Then, place the other end of the toothpick in fun food, like a brightly colored macaron, an iced donut with sprinkles, or a soft cookie. Put it on a small plate at the top of the place setting — and don’t be surprised if that fun food disappears before the entree is served.

Mini houseplants

Small potted succulents and cacti work best for this, but air plants in geometric containers are another great option. Tuck a little card with your guest’s name in the plant and place it near the top of the plate.

Fruit and veggies

For a fresh look, use a lemon, artichoke, pear, or apple for each place setting. Cut a thin slice in the top of the fruit or vegetable with a knife, and slide in a handwritten place card with the guest’s name.

Go natural

For a nature-themed table, use colorful maple or another sturdy, dried leaf (evergreen ones from a Magnolia tree also work well.) Another option is to use small round flat stones that are dark in color. Neatly write your guest’s name on the leaves or stones with a permanent gold or silver marker. Yet another appealing option is a pine cone with a tucked-in card showing the guest’s name.

Seashells

Not sure what to do with all those shells you’ve collected over the years? Repurpose them as place cards for an easy-breezy or mildly nautical theme. Neatly write your guest’s name or initials outside or inside the shell using a dark permanent marker or glitter pen.

Origami

Anything goes with this one, but a popular option is the beautiful, quintessential crane. You don’t have to be an origami expert to fold paper into a masterpiece. There are plenty of online videos to show you how it’s done, and it’s easier than you think.

In our next blog article, we’ll be highlighting some deliciously fun cocktails to enjoy this holiday season…so stay tuned. But in the meantime, and in true Harbor Club-style, we wish you a joyful and memorable time with friends and family.

PS – If you’re in town for the holidays (or any time of the year), be sure to stop by. We’d love to meet you and give you a tour of our beautiful golf community on Lake Oconee. We look forward to meeting you soon

Southern Living Pumpkin Desserts Perfect for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving.jpg

Pumpkin spice everything is all the rage each autumn. It’s such a versatile fruit (yes, pumpkin is a fruit.) But if you’re looking to spice up your Thanksgiving dessert table with something other than the typical pumpkin pie, you’ve come to the right place.

Granted, there’s nothing wrong with a delicious pumpkin pie, but this time, we’re sharing some other Southern Living pumpkin desserts that are sure to make a perfect ending to your Thanksgiving feast.

Pumpkin-Spice Bundt with Brown Sugar Icing and Candied Pecans

Get your best cake stand out for this one. A five-star reviewer of this cake said, “My family and friends would not stop talking about it. It was moist, delicious, and one of the best bundt cakes I have ever eaten. It is one that I will make again and again.” Another reviewer said, “This is the second time that I have made this cake as my friends and family love it. It is a must-have recipe for fall.”

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

A moist, delicious, slightly spicy cookie that beckons for a sweet, cream cheese frosting. Or, you could do what this reviewer mentioned, “I loved this recipe and so did my friends. I added chopped pecans on top just before baking. Fabulous!” We recommend toasting those pecans first for an even better layer of flavor.

Pumpkin Spice-Heath Cake Recipe

Our friends at Southern Living claim that this cake “tastes like fall in a cake pan.” We get it — teaming up pumpkin spice with toffee bits and a spice cake mix will smell and taste heavenly. A five-start reviewer shared this: “This is an amazingly moist and flavorful cake. I made the recipe as written, but only used half the amount of the toffee bits. If you enjoy pumpkin and spice, this is the cake for you!” But why only use half the toffee bits? We’ve much to be thankful for this year — go ahead and use the whole bag, as per the recipe instructions.

Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake

How can you possibly go wrong with these three layers: a graham cracker crust, a creamy cheesecake, and a richly spiced pumpkin layer top. A five-star reviewer mentioned a helpful tip, “This was fantastic!!! Will definitely make again! Everyone loved it for Thanksgiving. **One recipe note, white wine vinegar is listed under cheesecake filling ingredients but then it is not mentioned in the step-by-step directions. However, if you watch the video, she adds the vinegar at the very end of the cheesecake filling. So don’t forget to add that even though it’s not mentioned in the step-by-step.”

Pumpkin Crisp

Apples and berries aren’t the only fruits perfect for a crisp. This super-easy recipe includes moist butter cake, sweet pumpkin, and crunchy pecans. The Southern Living staffers recommend topping each portion with homemade whipped cream, but it would be great with a creamy vanilla ice cream too.

As a Southern Living-Inspired Community, we encourage new traditions that represent life in the charming South. Who knows — one of these yummy recipes could be the beginning of a tasty new tradition at your holiday table. No matter how you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, we wish you a wonderful and joyous holiday with family and friends.

Boost Your Mood: Start Decorating for the Holidays

holidays.jpeg

Want a fun way to boost your mood? Start decorating for the holidays. The process of decorating and seeing the resulting changes in scenery, not to mention the fun colors and festive lights, are proven to increase the production of dopamine (aka the “happiness hormone.”)

For some traditionalists, holiday decor starts going up as early as November 1, immediately after Halloween. Perhaps that’s why we’ve seen stores put out their holiday decor so early this year. Either way, we encourage you to brighten and adorn your house to your heart’s content. Here are some fun holiday decorating tips, ideas, and trends to try this year:

Glorify your garland

Garland is traditionally made with greenery such as pine boughs. There’s nothing wrong with that — it’s beautiful and plentiful in Georgia, but consider trying other natural elements. We’ve seen garland made from magnolia leaves, eucalyptus, cedar, juniper, and boxwood. Once you’ve got your base greenery, dress it up with ribbons, fruits, berries, fairy lights, and flowers. Southern Living offers excellent ideas for garland for your tree, but it’s also gorgeous to see on doorways, banisters, and fireplace mantles. Another Southern Living tip: “Our golden rule of garland: Always let each end fall all the way to the floor. To ensure the right length, measure your mantel’s height and width before shopping.”

Welcome a new wreath

This year, anything goes with wreaths, so experiment and have fun. Natural elements are trendy, so try a wreath with organic materials, such as herb sprays, twigs, fruits, nuts, and moss. Or opt for one that’s more bright and modern, made entirely out of shiny, multi-colored Christmas ball ornaments. Keep in mind that you don’t always have to hang a wreath on your front door. Instead, try laying one flat on your tabletop as a pretty centerpiece. Place a few candles of varying heights and complementary colors in the middle, and you’ll have an instant, lovely decoration for your dinner table.

Try a new tree

Live trees will continue to reign supreme — you just can’t beat that fresh and festive pine scent. But we’re also finding that asymmetrical and sparse trees will be popular this year. LED twig trees from last year continue to be trendy as well. What’s admirable about those is that they’re a charming accessory all year round. And if you’re interested in creating a fun, retro, holiday atmosphere, those cute ceramic, tabletop Christmas trees are making a triumphant comeback.

Optimize your ornaments

Get inspired by your surrounding landscapes and decorate your tree in a local spirit. For example, you could create a Lake Oconee tree theme with unique ornaments of boats, paddles, life vests, buoys, fishing lures, bobbers, etc. Another idea is to have a golf-themed tree with miniature golf clubs, golf carts, tees, and golf ball ornaments. Or go with a simple, natural theme with pretty birds, pinecones, deer, owls, and snowflake ornaments.

No matter how you deck your halls this year, the future looks bright. Last year’s pandemic taught us the importance of health, family, and friendships. We’re excited to gather back together in beautiful homes that easily accommodate our joyful celebrations with loved ones. That’s a part of what makes our Southern Living-Inspired Community so warm and inviting. We’d love for you to visit to experience it for yourself. Let’s start planning your visit today. Who knows? You might end up happily decking new halls this holiday season. That’s certainly something worth celebrating.

8 Ways to Make Your Tailgate the Best

tailgate-food.jpg

The South is a place where college football fans essentially bleed their favorite team’s colors — so it’s no surprise that tailgating is a favorite fall activity. Here are some ideas on how to make your game day tailgate the best it can be.

Bring the basics

A good tailgate starts with a good foundation of the basics. Include folding chairs, folding tables, bottle openers, koozies, napkins, cups, a phone charger, and ice. If the day is supposed to be chilly, bring along some blankets and pullovers too. Most importantly, don’t forget your tickets.

Include yard games

Sure, it’s good to have a football or frisbee to toss about, but why not try other activities? Some fun ideas include cornhole, lawn darts, and ladder ball. You can also try the jumbo versions of Jenga, Connect Four, checkers, or dice. Don’t be surprised if your neighboring tailgaters want to join in on the fun.

Team trivia

Everyone knows how much we enjoy trivia at Harbor Club, so why not try it at your tailgate? Before the game, come up with a list of interesting trivia questions, preferably about the teams that are about to go head-to-head. Then, hand the question sheets out to your tailgaters, have each write down their answers, and hand them back to you. Offer a fun prize to whoever answers the most questions correctly.

Show your team spirit

Encourage your tailgating crew to wear their favorite team gear. Provide a station that allows them to take their team spirit up a notch with things like face paints, temporary tattoos, beads, and other team-themed accessories. Consider giving an award, like a team mug or pendant, for whoever shows the most team spirit.

Set up a Bloody Mary bar

Make your tailgate the best place for a mid-day cocktail. Before the game, make a big batch of Bloody Mary mix, so it’s ready to go. Then have vodka on the side as well as a bunch of fun fixings like cheese cubes, beef jerky, pickles, celery, olives, horseradish, and hot sauce. Beer chasers are a welcome addition too.

Make some music

Playing upbeat tunes gets everyone in the mood to cheer on the home team. Create a fun playlist of toe-tapping tracks to play on a good wireless speaker, preferably one that can withstand the elements. After a Bloody Mary or two, don’t be surprised to find some of your tailgating crew boogieing down to the music.

Do a potluck

You don’t have to bear the burden of making all the food. Make the main dish then have each of your tailgaters bring one of their favorite sides. Assign different ones to different people, so one person brings a salad, another brings a dessert, etc. That way, you avoid having a bunch of chips and nothing else.

After the game…

Tailgating doesn’t have to end when the game begins. Consider after-game appetizers or snacks for post-game tailgating. Our friends at Southern Living offer many delicious tailgating recipes that everyone will love. You may also want to provide a thermos of coffee, especially for early games. Consider a bit of Baileys or Kahlua to make it even warmer.

Considering that Harbor Club’s location is only a half-hour away from Athens, Georgia, we have many “Dawgs” fans that happily reside in our Southern Living-Inspired Community. But they aren’t the only ones. We’ve got a lot of fun-loving neighbors who cheer on several different SEC teams happily, together. We invite you to experience the good vibes at our award-winning lake and golf community. Contact us today for a tour.

2021 Home Decor and Design Trends

home-decor-trends.jpeg

After spending tons of time inside this past year, many of you may be ready to refresh your home’s decor and design. Considering all that we’ve been through during the pandemic, change is undoubtedly good. So we’re sharing some of the latest home decor and design trends we’re seeing right now — much of which, not surprisingly, revolve around comfort. Soothing colors and styles are more popular than ever, and function seems to be surpassing form in 2021.

Jettison the germs

Even though the pandemic is subsiding, many continue to be concerned about germs. With that in mind, high-traffic areas, like the kitchen, are seeing some upgrades. Easy ones to incorporate are touch-free trash bins and faucets. But we’re also seeing homeowners moving away from marble and granite countertops and opting for more non-porous ones, like quartz, Corian, and copper. Why? Since they are impervious to liquids, they’re much easier to clean and sanitize. They’re also highly stain-resistant — a nice plus.

Backsplashes and countertops unite

While we’re talking about countertops, another trend we’re seeing is exact-match backsplashes and countertops. Homeowners are opting to create their backsplash by running their countertop material up onto the wall. Depending on which countertop material you use, it can give your kitchen a stunning, seamless, and highly sophisticated appearance. Best of all, since it’s not the typical tile, there’s no grout to keep clean.

Pergolas are popular

One of the 2021 house plan trends we mentioned earlier this year was the increased desire for outdoor living space. Those alfresco ideals are here to stay. Pergolas are making a big comeback as people continue to head outside to do more activities, like entertaining, dining, relaxing, and even working. Everyone is realizing that the fresh air and sunshine are good for the soul, not to mention a great way to connect with nature.

Nurture in nature

Speaking of connecting with nature, we’re seeing many natural elements being incorporated in home decor now. People are attracted to natural textures, such as wood, wicker, and rattan. We’re also seeing more earthy palettes like warm greens, browns, taupes, sand, and even beige — all cozy, comforting colors. Houseplants are also trending up. They have the added benefit of keeping the air in your home fresh and clean.

Promote your pantry

Pantries are no longer that small cabinet or tiny kitchen closet. Instead, today’s working pantries are designer walk-in spaces that house extra refrigerators, sinks, additional counter space, wine racks, snack drawers, floating shelves, and custom glass doors (so everyone can see how beautiful they are.) With so many of us continuing to cook and eat at home today, homeowners want bigger, better, more organized places to store their food and beverages, not to mention all of their small appliances too.

Forget formal rooms

Say ‘so long’ to formal dining rooms and living rooms that are so rarely used today. The focus is now on more functional spaces instead. This is especially true for home offices and Zoom rooms, which were vital spaces during the pandemic. Today, we’re seeing an uptick in multi-functional workspaces, libraries, three-season rooms, attractive dropzones, and hobby rooms. Homeowners want more functional spaces that better reflect their personalities and deliver joy each time they are utilized.

Benefit from a bidet

Want another way to gain joy? Use a bidet. Hear us out on this one. Remember the toilet paper shortage of 2020? It was no big deal for anyone who owned a bidet. But as popular as they are in Europe and Asia, they’re still making inroads in the U.S. However, according to Coherent Market Insights, North America accounts for the largest market share of bidet sales in the last three years running. Their growing popularity is no surprise considering they’re healthier and more gentle than toilet paper, not to mention better for the environment. Note that you don’t have to remodel and add a stand-alone fixture to your bathroom. There are tons of high-quality bidet toilet seats and add-on fixtures that are a cinch to install on your existing commode. The best part? The cleanliness you’ll feel is fantastic.

Let in the light

Natural light is in — the more sunlight you can invite into your space, the better. So ditch the heavy curtains and hang up pretty sheers instead. Some people are even opting to keep their windows bare. Natural light has a way of making your home feel cheerful and comfortable. The bonus? Natural light increases your serotonin, which is the hormone that regulates and stabilizes your mood, happiness, and well-being.

Here’s another thing that can boost your mood — living the Harbor Club life. As Georgia’s only Southern Living-Inspired Community, we’re proud of our charming, resort-like neighborhood with over 80% full-time, friendly residents. Plus, our care and attention to detail ensure that every new Harbor Club home offers unparalleled quality, craftsmanship, and style. We’d love to show you around our much sought-after lake and golf community. So why not experience Harbor Club for yourself? You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Back To School Tips for a Smooth Routine

school-back.jpg

By the time you read this, most kids have merrily gone back to school in Lake Country, full-time and in-person. The transition back may be a bit more challenging this school year due to the pandemic. To make it easier, we’re sharing a few fun tips that’ll help make the back to school routine smooth and manageable for all.

Create a study space

A popular trend that resulted from the pandemic is dedicated workspaces at home. They’re a must today, for both school and work. Setting up a comfortable home study space for your kids helps them concentrate and focus on their work. Ensure their space is located in a quiet spot where there are few distractions. Note that it might be outside the child’s bedroom, such as a dedicated part of a shared room or another room altogether. Keep in mind that newer homes now have “Zoom Rooms” set up perfectly for individual family members to use for virtual learning and working from home

Make a message center

Back to school means lots of meetings, practices, tournaments, rehearsals, and more. Make it less chaotic with a family message center. That way, everyone can easily keep track of schedules, appointments, and other logistics. A simple dry-erase board or chalkboard, an attractive calendar, and some colorful sticky notes are fun and easy components that’ll help keep everyone aware and organized.

Define a drop zone

A “drop zone” is essentially an enhanced, modern mudroom. Today’s drop zone is a place for all sorts of things that you’d want to “drop” as soon as you enter the door — items like backpacks, coats, shoes, keys, sunglasses, water bottles, lunch bags, mail, pet leashes, and more. They’re also a good spot to charge phones and other devices. A drop zone is nice, not only for its practicality and functionality but for how it cuts down on clutter. They’re also great for staging things kids and parents need when heading out the door, making a better start to the day for everyone. Also, consider incorporating your message center in your drop zone. And lastly, keep in mind that your drop zone doesn’t have to be messy. Clever design and storage spaces can make it attractive and welcoming.

Try new tech tools

If your kids have trouble focusing on homework, consider investing in high-quality, noise-canceling headphones. If they have trouble getting up for school each morning, try a sunrise alarm clock. It’s nice because rather than utilizing annoying loud sounds, it gradually brightens the room with light to slowly and steadily rouse kids from their slumber. Another wise investment is a sturdy lap desk so that kids can utilize their laptops in different parts of the house, inside and out.

Factor in family time

Check in with your kids often and ask how they’re doing. School can be challenging, so if they speak up, take the time to talk things through. Give them something to look forward to on evenings and weekends. Fun activities like a hike, hitting a bucket of balls, boating on Lake Oconee, swimming in the pool, or simply going out to eat together — all can make a big difference. Of course, living in a positive, nurturing, and warm environment fosters better connections with family and friends — all of which go a long way toward enabling kids to relax during times when they need a positive boost.

We invite you to come see why Harbor Club is an excellent place for family fun — not only during back-to-school time but all year round. Contact us today for a personalized tour.

The Appeal of a Sleeping Porch

sleeping-porch.jpeg

What is a sleeping porch? It’s exactly as it sounds — a screened-in porch utilized for sheltered sleep outside. But how did it come to be? And why did people use them? Learn the history of sleeping porches, why they’re now having a renaissance, and some fun ideas for creating your own cozy sleeping porch at home.

Sleeping porch history

Imagine living in the American South and trying to sleep during summer’s oppressive heat and humidity…without air conditioning. It seems unbearable, right? Before air conditioning, people would sleep on a porch at night to beat the heat. Sleeping porches were typically large, screened-in balconies located on the second floor of the home. They were often built to maximize the breeze, and the screens helped keep pesky bugs outside where they belong. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for the entire family to sleep on the porch during hot summer nights.

A century ago, during the 1920s, demand for homes with sleeping porches increased significantly with a “sanitary revolution.” Much like today, fresh air became known as a cure-all for the ailments of the time, even tuberculosis. Back then, people didn’t understand why the fresh air helped reduce illnesses, just that it helped improve their health.

Years later, sleeping porches fell out of favor, eventually succumbing to the popularity of air conditioning. Homes were no longer built to take advantage of cool evenings and natural breezes. Once air conditioning became the norm, homes were designed to keep artificially cooled air inside and the hot air outside. Today, people often keep their home’s windows shut all year long.

Sleeping porch renaissance

With the advent of the pandemic, not to mention an increased interest in energy-efficiency and sustainability, the desire for more outdoor living space is now making a comeback. Covered porches are having a renaissance, as today’s homebuyers seek them to better deal with the public health crisis. Homeowners are also now more in favor of sustainable design features, like open windows instead of air conditioning.

Quality sleep depends on stress, anxiety, noise, artificial light, and air quality. Slumbering outside in the fresh air alleviates many harmful factors. Compelling health benefits gained from sleeping outside include:

  • Exposure to natural sunlight, especially sunrise and sunset, helps reset your body clock to correspond to natural circadian rhythms.
  • Reducing your nightly exposure to blue light from your phone and computer helps improve melatonin production, which is the hormone that regulates your sleep.
  • Studies show that being outdoors helps boost levels of white blood cells and anti-cancer proteins, both of which increase your immunity to illnesses.
  • Our brains utilize the majority of the oxygen we inhale. Fresh, clean air provides better quality than stale, indoor air — so a night outside improves your ability to think.
  • Seeing trees and listening to the calming sounds of the outdoors reduces stress and restores calm. That’s why spas often play nature sounds throughout their facilities.

Ideas for creating your own sleeping porch

If you have a home with a porch, you already have the makings to set it up for sleep. Here are some ideas for an attractive, comfy, and snug sleeping porch:

  • Consider using a daybed. With the right pillows and decorative accents, it makes your porch look less like a bedroom. It can also double as extra seating when you’re entertaining.
  • A hanging bed is trendy yet comfortable. It’s an eye-catching decorative detail that’s also functional since it’s easy to clean underneath.
  • For optimal comfort, put your bed in a spot that takes advantage of cool breezes.
  • Utilize a ceiling fan to cool and circulate the air.
  • Try sconce lighting for nighttime reading.
  • For more privacy, add shutters or curtains.
  • If there’s not a fireplace already built-in to your porch, consider a gas fire pit. They’re easy to install and require little space. Their warmth can extend your porch into a cozy, three-season space.

A sleeping porch is a fantastic way to feel connected to the outdoors while creating a camp-like environment protected from the bugs and weather. It’s also the perfect place for taking a nap and reading a book, not to mention getting quality nighttime slumber. Try it, and you’ll soon enjoy improved mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Plants from the Southern Living Plant Collection

southern-living-plant.jpeg

Living at Harbor Club, have you ever wondered which iconic southern plants would grow best at our location? The Southern Living Plant Collection is an excellent place to start…especially since we are a Southern Living-Inspired Community.

The experts at Southern Living introduced the collection in 2008 both to inspire and assist Southerners with solving landscape challenges.

Every plant in the collection is tested to ensure that it survives and thrives in our warm climate (Note: Our community is located in zone 7b.) The thoughtfully chosen plants are well-known for bigger, longer-lasting blooms and stunning foliage. Lucky for Harbor Club residents, our local Home Depot carries many of the plants in the Southern Living Collection, but you can also easily find them online. Here’s are some of the South’s most iconic options to try.

Popular at The Masters, these shrubs are always stunning during peak bloom. You’ll find their frilly flowers in many colors: reds, pinks, purples, whites, oranges, and yellows. All offer bright blossoms, and many have a divine scent. Try to buy plants while they’re in bloom to ensure you get the colors you prefer. It’s best to plant clumps of the same cultivar and color for a stunning display.

Try: Sunbow Solar Flare Azalea. It produces neon-yellow blooms with additional shades of orange. It has a sweet fragrance (somewhat like honeysuckle), and butterflies love it.

Camellias

Known as the “Queens of the Winter Flowers,” camellias bloom during the cold season months. Therefore, flowering occurs during ideal planting times — from October through November for Camellia sasanqua and February through March for Camellia japonica. As much as we love them, deer don’t care for camellias — a good thing when you live at Harbor Club.

Try: October Magic Ivory Camellia. This variety is among the earliest to bloom. It has lovely white double blossoms that appear from October to January.

Gardenia

Surprisingly, gardenias are members of the coffee plant family. They are renowned and loved in the South for their superb, heady fragrance and gorgeous, creamy-white flowers. The blooms contrast beautifully with their shiny, dark-green foliage.

Try: Fool Proof Gardenia. In the spring, it offers tons of highly fragrant, white flowers. Once those blooms drop, this cultivar will bud up again and rebloom through the fall season.

Hydrangea

It’s a well-known fact that Southerners love to clip and share hydrangea blooms with loved ones. During the warm days of summer, you’ll see huge balloons of pretty blossoms in blues, pinks, purples, and white. Their lush green foliage makes for a lovely background.

Try: White Wedding. It produces white, cone-shaped blooms each summer with large, long-lasting flowers. These are perfect for flower arrangements. A bonus is that this variety is compact, so pruning is rarely necessary.

Crape myrtle

Commonly referred to as the “Lilac of the South,” our summers would not be the same without our beautiful, blooming crape myrtles. They tolerate heat, humidity, and drought and flower all summer long. The wrinkled flower petals look like crape paper, thus the name. Colorful blooms range from pink to deep red to white or light purple. The bark is attractive, and the foliage is dark green. In the fall, the leaves change to pretty yellows, oranges, and reds.

Try: Early Bird Lavender Crape Myrtle. This variety starts to bloom as early as Mother’s Day, which is much earlier than other varieties. It then reblooms for about four months afterward with gorgeous lavender blooms. This is a semi-dwarf variety and gets to be only about five to eight feet tall.

Magnolia

No other tree or shrub conjures up images of the South like a magnolia. The native “Magnolia grandiflora” is the most classic Southern variety with large, glossy leaves and huge, fragrant, creamy-white blossoms. Grown as ornamentals, and depending on the type, blooms can be creamy-white or pink and have a tulip or bowl shape.

Try: Stellar Ruby Magnolia. It boasts pink-red blooms that are uniquely banana-scented. The flowers appear in late spring and continue blooming into the summer and early fall.

Gardening in Georgia: Top Crops for April, May, June, and July

garden.jpeg

A joy of living where we do is the gardens and the bounties of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Here, you can plant or harvest something from your garden almost all year long. Now that we’re well into spring and heading into the summer season, it’s the best time of year to plant your favorites. Not sure what to grow? Our friends at the Athens-based University of Georgia Extension have a great list, broken down by month, to help you discover and decide on what’s best. But for the next few months, here are some ideas for top crops to plant and the best ways to achieve gardening success in our own backyard

April

April is the time to plant your favorite “warm-season” or “frost-tender” crops. These include beans (snap, pole and lima), cantaloupe, sweet corn, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, field peas, peppers, squash, tomatoes, and watermelon. For better pollination and bountiful success, plant at least two or more rows and mulch well between each. April is also the best time to plant herbs.

May

Plant another set of the vegetables mentioned for April, particularly snap beans, corn, squash, and lima beans. The additional planting allows you to enjoy a more extended harvest period for those veggies. Also, apply extra mulch to your established tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, okra, and lima beans before any dry spells occur. Thicker mulch also helps to keep weeds to a minimum.

June

When two-thirds of the tops of your onions and potatoes have died down, it’s time to harvest them. To keep them fresh, store onions in a dry, air-filled place. Store your potatoes in a dark, cool place. June is also the perfect time to plant sweet potatoes as well as an additional planting of Southern peas.

July

With it being mid-summer, it’s important to get your timing right on your next planting of vegetables. Plant your last sets of tomatoes, okra, corn, pole beans, lima beans, cucumbers, squash, and snap beans no later than July 20. That way, they have enough time to mature before the first frost. July is also the perfect time to plant your pumpkins to ensure they’re ready for Halloween.

Resort-Style Communities: The Perfect Place to Live in a Pandemic

full-time-vacation.jpg

Due to the pandemic, Americans are buying more homes in exclusive resort communities (like Harbor Club.) We’ve certainly seen an unprecedented uptick in sales this past year. But, what’s prompting so many people to buy in resort-style communities, especially during this era of COVID-19?

There are several reasons — these being the most prominent:

Vacation travel feels risky

COVID-19 made vacation travel a thing of the past. Few people risked going on trips. They avoided flying, and hotel stays due to fear of infection. For many, it made more sense to move to a resort-style community with tons of fun amenities. Doing so created the perfect “staycation” — one that’s readily available, 24/7, with no travel required.

Resort communities are perfect for remote workers and students

The COVID-induced remote work trend fueled tons of real estate sales in resort communities. Families that can work from home and attend school online have a distinct advantage. They can work and get educated from anywhere there is access to high-speed internet. Now, people could both live and work from almost anyplace. So, why not plug in with a view of a gorgeous lake or a pristine golf course? Many aren’t hesitating to do it and are glad they did.

Remote work is not a passing fad

The work from home trend isn’t expected to slow down. Many predict that some tech workers may never return to an office. Since COVID-19, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter have offered their employees a permanent work-from-home option. It seems that the pandemic has fundamentally changed the way most companies operate, increasingly allowing more of their employees to work from distant locations. Remote employees gain more freedom, and companies are saving money, so remote work is here to stay (in some capacity.)

Resort communities are a sanctuary

Many resort-style communities have proven to be safe-havens during the pandemic. Several quickly adapted to their resident’s changing needs. At Harbor Club, we offered specialized services, like chef-prepared take-out meals and a curbside pickup for groceries. Now more than ever, living in a supportive, close-knit community full of great friends and neighbors brings much comfort and peace-of-mind, especially during challenging times.

Nature abounds

No longer do people wish to pay top-dollar to live in crowded buildings close to the city. They’re fleeing urban areas in search of homes with more of a connection to the outdoors. No one wants to feel confined. They want safe places where they can go outside and enjoy the fresh air, warm sunshine, the tranquility of the woods, the serenity of a lake, and more.

It’s social (in a safe way)

By design, resort-style communities offer plenty of opportunities to cultivate and grow social connections. Many are easily enjoyed (safely) outdoors with impressive amenities like a golf course, community garden, pool, marina, dog park, hiking trails, and more. Plus, community social events have changed to ensure the safety and well-being of others. There’s no need to cancel a neighborhood gathering if conducted safely. Plus, people love interacting and chatting with friends, even from a distance. It keeps spirits high at a time when we need it most.

Better work/life and school/life balance

With so many parents and kids “Zooming” all day at home, it’s nice to get a break now and then. Our residents are making the most of those respites by heading outside. Resort-style living at Harbor Club offers plenty of quick, fun things to do. You could bring the dog to the dog park, practice on the putting green, hit a bucket of balls at the driving range, go for a quick run or walk at the track, take the boat out on the lake, grab a delicious lunch, or indulge in a zen-like yoga class. When there are tons of fun options readily available, it’s easy to take a break and enjoy well-earned recreational endeavors.

More room to breathe, inside and out

Most lux communities offer sizable, attractive, highly desirable homes. They are well-proportioned with more “elbow room” and better utilization of space, inside and outside the house. Outdoor porches and patios are ideal for both work and play. At Harbor Club, we’re finding that many of today’s high-end home buyers require spaces for multiple home offices — separate ones for mom and dad, as well as dedicated remote learning rooms for kids. Larger spaces, inside and outside the home, create harmony for all that live there.

Ready to experience harmony and joy that only a resort-style community can bring? Consider living at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee, the only Southern Living-Inspired Community located in the beautiful state of Georgia. Boost your life and lifestyle in 2021, and contact us today to start planning your exclusive in-person or virtual visit. Your future self will thank you for it.

Give Back this Holiday Season – Here’s How

giving.jpg

The holiday season is here, and it’s the most wonderful time of the year (yes, even during a pandemic.) Part of what makes it so fantastic is that it’s the season of giving. It’s what the season is about, after all. Psychology Today has proof that “It’s better to give than to receive.”

And according to The Guardian, generous people are happier people who lead more fulfilling lives. Want to be one of them? It’s easy. Here’s how to get inspired to give back this holiday season.

Volunteer

There’s nothing like experiencing that fulfilling feeling when you give of yourself. Volunteering your time or talent are rewarding ways to be charitable. Giving those things provides a sense of purpose beyond your livelihood. And volunteering is an excellent way to get to know your community and meet new, marvelous, like-minded people.

Give your friendship

Spread cheer this year. Take the time to write a handwritten note of appreciation to a friend. Or send simple, touching letters to people in nursing homes or hospitals. Check in on people who might be alone this year since they can’t travel. If you know of someone going through a tough time right now, reach out and let them know you care. Give them a shoulder to cry on or let them bend your ear. Sometimes just listening is the best gift you can give.

Conduct random acts of giving

If you’re in line at a drive-through or supermarket, offer to pay for the person behind you. Your kindness will be a big surprise and will undoubtedly make someone’s day. Buying a stranger’s cup of coffee or groceries is a meaningful act that’ll bring much joy to all — even the cashier.

Shop small

When you do your shopping, make sure to buy items from local, family-owned businesses. When you do, you help strengthen your local economy, and it guarantees your money is going to other members of your community, not some multi-million-dollar corporation.

Give monetary gifts

Whether you’re giving to a person or an organization, monetary gifts are always welcome and appreciated. And when purchasing gifts, consider buying some from organizations that support charitable causes. Every little bit helps, and you’ll feel virtuous in the process.

No matter how you give this year, understand that every dollar you donate, every hour you volunteer, and every instance of goodwill you provide, all offer hope. The act of giving restores faith in humanity. We fully comprehend that here at Harbor Club and are proud to support several charitable causes throughout the year. Here are just a few:

  • The Greene County Christmas Stocking Fund – Harbor Club provides new, unwrapped toys to less fortunate children via our Santa Claus Open tournament.
  • Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club – The organization helps young people reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Harbor Club often hosts its Moonlight & Motown events and more.
  • The Lydia Project – This endeavor offers valuable services to women and girls who are coping with cancer. All proceeds from our Ladies League Golf Association’s Pink Ribbon Tournament benefit this organization. In 2020 they raised over $16,000.
  • Greene County Senior Center – The proceeds from our annual Turkey Shoot Scramble tournament are used to donate frozen turkeys to the Senior Center, which are then given to needy families in the county.
  • Folds of Honor – Harbor Club proudly hosts the Folds of Honor Golf Tournament each year. 100% of the proceeds go toward scholarships for families of veterans.
  • Oconee Regional Humane Society – All donations from our Southern Living-Inspired model home tours have benefitted this organization.

Please don’t lose sight of the value of giving to others this holiday season, especially during the pandemic. Not only will you help make the world a better place, and it’ll warm your heart and your soul.

If you’d like to learn more about our charitable causes or see if Harbor Club can host your benefit event, contact us today. We’re happy to help.

Community Matters: 8 Benefits of Belonging

community.jpg

“Harbor Club is all about family and a sense of community. A round of golf, a boat ride on the lake, followed by a casual cookout at home. It doesn’t get any better than this.” -Kevin Butler

Nowadays, belonging to warm, tight-knit community matters more than ever. The winter months typically keep most people inside. And now COVID-19 has isolated people even more due to social distancing protocols. But, being the social creatures that we are, it’s normal to want to interact with others and be part of a ‘tribe.’ Belonging to a community offers tons of great benefits. Here are eight of them:

1 – Encouragement abounds

In a strong, affectionate community, encouragement is both mutual and reciprocal. No matter the situation, there are times when you are the encourager and other times when you’re the one that needs encouragement. Either way, it’s nice to know you have cheerleaders and a good support network because sooner or later, we all experience difficulties, big and small.

2 – Expands your network

A healthy community is one that allows its residents and members to connect deeply with like-minded people. In life or business, you may need a particular service, desire to cultivate relationships with more influential people, or wish to grow your network of friends. When you reside in a tight-knit community, you’ll find that neighbors are happy to help in all those respects, happily introducing you to others that can be of service.

3 – Creates pride in place

Think about your current community. Do you love where you live? Is it beautiful? Do you get excited to welcome people into your neighborhood? Your town? Are there places and spaces you look forward to showing off or sharing with them? If you answered yes to all of these, it means you live in an incredible community and have pride in place. If you answered no, it might be time to scope out a new place that’s a better fit for you.

4 – Online community

Beyond the physical community, most have expanded their reach to online communities. These include Facebook and Instagram pages and other online forums where everyone can easily interact. Online communities offer an additional avenue for people to get introduced, connect, share information, and expand conversations.

5 – Strong social interaction

When it comes to camaraderie and social atmosphere, nothing compares to a robust community. Entertaining events, social gatherings, and fun activities all boost social interaction. A 2010 study by Brigham Young University found that social interaction is vital for good health. The study showed that lack of social connection was worse than lack of exercise and that it’s twice as harmful to a person’s health as obesity. Granted, what you put into social interaction is what you get out of it, so participation is key. Getting out and getting involved provides the ability to meet cheerful people with similar interests.

6 – Increases physical activity

An active community is one that encourages a healthy lifestyle. Having ready access to fantastic community amenities makes it easy. You could play golf, pickleball, or tennis when those facilities are close to home. It’s a cinch to enjoy fun fitness classes such as Zumba, Jazzercise, and yoga, go for a swim, or take Fido to the dog park when all are readily available. Plus, top-notch amenities offer the best of both worlds – physical exercise and fun social interaction with others, all of which do wonders for your health.

7 – Higher property values

Should you ever decide to sell your home or land, you may find that the resale value is excellent in a well-established community. It’s especially true in golf and lake communities since those homes are considered more prestigious and are highly sought-after. Property values hold strong due to beautiful views, lux amenities, and of course, friendly neighbors.

8 – Better work-life balance

When you live someplace that’s ideal for both work and play, your work-life balance is better than ever. With so many of us working from home today, it’s nice to have a highly functional home office, but it’s even better to escape it to enjoy life. Whether it’s grabbing a delicious lunch at your local eatery, going for a quick hike on nearby trails, or throwing a line in the lake, quick and easy access is key.

Fortunately, our Southern Living-Inspired Community encompasses all of these benefits and more. Our well-established, debt-free, gated neighborhood offers premium amenities, awesome activities, and some of the finest golf you can play in the Southeast. The best part? You’re invited to be a part of it. Stop looking and start living at Harbor Club. Contact us to learn more about our community today.

Get a Headstart on Holiday Home Decorating

holiday-decorating.jpg

Admit it — did you put up your holiday decorations over Thanksgiving break? If so, we see absolutely nothing wrong with that. It was, after all, one of our suggestions for fun Thanksgiving ideas. But if you didn’t get a headstart on your holiday home decorating yet, now is the time to begin. No matter what holiday(s) you celebrate in December, here are some ideas to get you started:

Take stock of your stuff

Dig out your boxes of holiday decorations and sort through them. Ditch anything that’s broken or no longer working (yes, even those glitchy string lights.) Take stock of what’s left and do a little shopping for items that will enhance what you already have. Also, think about ways to highlight the focal points and beautiful architectural details throughout your home, like hearths, fireplaces, front doorways, etc.

Determine decoration location

Does your Christmas tree end up in the same spot every year? Consider trying a new location for it. Place it and your other decorations where people can enjoy them from multiple viewing points — even from outside. Also, who says you have to have just one Christmas tree? In 2020, no one would blame you for any extra festive efforts. The more, the merrier.

Outdoor decor

Speaking of outside, ensure that your outdoor decor can withstand the elements. Use lighting specific for outdoor use and pretty plastic ornaments instead of anything fragile, like glass. Wreaths and garland made from live pine boughs prefer chillier outdoor temps. Once those start shedding their needles, you’ll be glad the mess is outside rather than in.

Don’t be afraid to show off

We’re primarily talking to you, new homeowners. If you’ve got a lot of pride in place, feel free to show off this year. You’ve got a beautiful new home — so make it even better with lovely holiday lights and decorations. Everyone who passes by would love to see and experience the extra festive cheer your efforts bring.

Think about fun colors and themes

Be creative and try fun themes and color schemes. Love golf? Decorate a small tree with golf-themed ornaments (those made with golf balls, tees, miniature clubs, etc.) If purple is your favorite color, decorate a tree in multiple shades of the hue. For the kitchen, consider a small rosemary bush trimmed to look like a Christmas tree. Decorate it with small ornaments and enjoy the plant’s piney, herbal scent now and for months to come.

Don’t stress, just start

Is it overwhelming to even think about holiday decorating? The best way to tackle it is just to start. Begin by putting up your favorite, cherished decorations. Seeing those will help motivate you to do more. And if you need extra inspiration, take a look at these great decorating ideas from our good friends at Southern Living Magazine. Being a Southern Living-Inspired Community, we certainly admire and embrace all of their holiday guidance.

From all of us at Harbor Club, we wish you a holiday season filled with much joy, warm moments, and cherished memories.

Classic Candied Yams

This classic dish uses ingredients you likely already have on hand. Even better, it only requires 20 minutes of hands-on time. The bonus? The scents of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg will make your house smell amazing. Get the recipe.

Thanksgiving 2020: 9 Ideas to Make It Fun and Safe

Thanksgiving-during-COVID-19.jpg

What does Thanksgiving look like for you and your family this year? No doubt, it’s going to be a bit different. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout the country, we’re all trying to ensure our family and friends remain in good health. For many, that means nixing big gatherings on Thanksgiving — a holiday known for large, boisterous get-togethers. But don’t be dismayed. This year’s festivities may be the start of new, cherished traditions. Here are some ideas to keep if fun yet safe this year and beyond.

1 – Dine al-fresco

Lucky for us, our location offers several balmy days during the fall and winter months. It’s not out of the question to enjoy an outdoor dining celebration. Fresh air is ideal for keeping our loved ones safe. So, let’s all hope for excellent weather on the holiday, but even if it’s not perfect, an outdoor porch can be a safe and cozy spot for families to congregate.

2 – Gather virtually

If we can’t gather everyone in one physical place, do it online instead. Consider doing a video happy hour or dinner party. At this point, we’ve all become pretty adept at Zoom meetings. Let’s use those tech powers for good rather than another boring work meeting. Once everyone has joined the call, share a toast and a moment of gratitude. And don’t forget to take a screenshot and share it on social media. People love seeing people, especially on the holidays.

3 – Play trivia

Everyone knows that we’re big into trivia at Harbor Club. So, whether you’re having a small, at-home gathering, or are virtually meeting via Zoom, give Thanksgiving-themed trivia a try. It’s a fun way to get everyone chatting. Parade Magazine published a free list of 50 Thanksgiving Trivia Questions and Answers. Undoubtedly, you’ll learn some fascinating new facts…maybe even one that will prove useful at one of our Trivia Nights.

4 – Conduct a cooking lesson

Do you have any family that are sad about missing out on a favorite, traditional dish? Teach them how to make it. With this fun twist on a Zoom meeting, you can show everyone how to create a family-favorite recipe. Don’t have a secret recipe to share? Show how to make a signature cocktail instead. Our friends at Southern Living have an excellent recipe for Thanksgiving Rum Punch that you could try. Don’t forget to offer a gratitude-themed toast before indulging in the results.

5 – Have a pajama party

On Thanksgiving, most people gather together in their Sunday best. With everything else being so topsy-turvy this year, why not wear cozy PJs instead? If you’re celebrating only with those at home, this idea works perfectly. Plus, pajamas are ideal for accommodating a belly full of ‘Turkey Day’ feast.

6 – Have pie for breakfast

Usually, a tradition the day after Thanksgiving, a slice of pumpkin pie for breakfast with a warm cup of coffee, is divine. Why not give it a go ON the holiday instead? Celebrate Thanksgiving together online or at home with delicious pie for breakfast. It’s not that far-fetched when you think about it, considering we eat coffee cake, strudel, and other sweets for our first meal of the day. So, what’ll be? Apple? Pumpkin? Pecan? Maybe a little of all three…

7 – Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Contrary to popular belief, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is NOT canceled this year. It’s scheduled to take place on Thanksgiving Day from 9 am to 12 pm and be televised on NBC. Broadway performers will be back in action with short takes on “Hamilton,” “Jagged Little Pill,” and more. Rumor has it that Dolly Parton will make an appearance as well. You can also expect to see the massive balloons, but this year they’ll be driven by utility vehicles down 34th Street only. It’ll be different but fun to watch.

8 – Watch the football game

Not into the parade thing? That’s ok — watch football instead. It’s a classic Thanksgiving Day activity that’s loved by many. Here’s the lineup:

12:30 pm: Houston Texans at Detroit Lions, CBS

4:30 pm: Washington Football Team at Dallas Cowboys, FOX

8:20 pm: Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, NBC

9 – Put up the Christmas tree

We’re seeing a trend where people are putting up their Christmas trees and other holiday decorations super-early this year. It makes sense, considering it brings joy to so many that really need it right now. Why wait? Go ahead and get into the spirit of the season with festive decor. December is right around the corner, and Christmas will be here before you know it anyway.

No matter what you end up doing for the Thanksgiving holiday, we wish you glad tidings for peace, prosperity, and much abundance this season. When you think about it, we all have so much to be thankful for — especially if you live at Harbor Club. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

PS – Do you have family coming into town for the upcoming holiday? Why not play golf together on our highly-acclaimed course? It’s a fun, safe activity for all. While the course is closed on Thanksgiving Day, it is open the day before, on Wednesday, November 25, with tee times available from 8 am – 12 pm.

Zoom Rooms: Create the Perfect Setup at Home

SLIC_Model_Home.jpg

Have you used Zoom yet? During the pandemic, many of us are working from home. Zoom, as well as other online meeting applications, such as FaceTime and Google Hangouts, are now common tools for gathering safely — especially for those working remotely. Just like you would with a face-to-face meeting, you want to be presentable online. But have you put much thought into your background? Not those wonky, virtual backgrounds, but the actual room you’re in during the meeting? If you’re lucky, you’re in a home office or another quiet, multi-purpose space. (By the way, we’re seeing a significant uptick in need for rooms like that in real estate.)

But no matter what space you’re in, as we navigate the “new normal” of online gatherings, your “Zoom Room” is important because it’s a critical part of how you present yourself online. Here are tips for making a great impression in both regards:

Look at the light

Use a room in your home that has excellent natural light. Open the curtains and the blinds to let in the daylight. Set your computer in front of the window so that the camera is facing you. If you don’t have a suitable window, place your lamp so that it lights up your face from the front. Avoid having bright light above or behind you. If you are backlit, you’ll appear dark, and people won’t be able to see you. If the light is above you, it’ll highlight features that you don’t want highlighted. You’re in a meeting, not an interrogation.

Behold your background

If you’ve never paid attention to your “Zoom Room” background, take a good look now. It should be a space that portrays the best about you. You want it to show your style and taste. Keep it clean, tidy, and simply decorated. If you look closely at some of the local news anchors’ backgrounds, you’ll see tastefully arranged family photos, artwork, books, flowers, and travel memorabilia. There are no dirty dishes, piles of laundry, or books on religion, politics, or other pivotal subjects. You want the focus on you, not on anything that could be embarrassing in your backdrop.

Adjust your angle

Your best angle in an online meeting is straight ahead. Be sure to directly face your computer’s camera and raise your laptop monitor to sit at eye level. If you’re in too tight of a spot to get that perfect, head-on view, move to a room that gives you more space. Avoid letting only half your face show (or just your chin, or just your forehead.) Seeing all of your facial features and your body language helps others know that you’re fully present and engaged in the conversation.

We believe “Zoom Rooms” will continue to be a growing trend in real estate. With so many more people working from home, we’re finding that buyers want and need multi-purpose rooms that can be used for both business and leisure. A beautifully built, light-filled, and roomy home provides the best options, as do those with well-designed, dedicated office spaces. At Harbor Club, there are plenty of homes that satisfy those needs. Take a look at our current listings and let us know if you’d like a tour (virtual or otherwise.) We’re happy to show you our award-winning Southern Living-Inspired Community. It’s an impressive place to live, work, and play. See for yourself and contact us today

Grits are a classic, southern staple that everyone loves. When you check your pantry, push aside the quick-cooking stuff and grab the slow-cooking, stone-ground grits instead. With this easy recipe, you won’t have to stand over the stove, stirring forever. Your slow-cooker does all the hard work for you. RECIPE

Potato-Crusted Pizza

No yeast? No problem. The crust of this kid-friendly pizza is made with frozen potato rounds. We bet it would work just as well with tater tots if that’s all you’ve got in the freezer. And if you don’t have fresh basil, you can substitute it with a teaspoon or two of dried. This is a simple, five-ingredient recipe that you’ll likely put into your standard, weekly meal rotation. RECIPE

Baked Chicken and Rice With Black Beans

Grab that package of yellow-rice mix that’s been kicking around in the back of your pantry. That, along with a can of black beans, a can of diced tomatoes, some chicken, cheese, and some veggies, make for a healthy, highly-rated, one-dish meal. RECIPE

Meatball Stew

This wholesome, stick-to-your-ribs dish is a cinch to make. It uses frozen vegetables, frozen meatballs, and a few other simple pantry items like potatoes, onions, tomato sauce, and beef broth. The prep time is only five minutes, and cook time is only 20 — which means you’ll have dinner on the table in half-an-hour or less. That’s a win. RECIPE

Creamy Buffalo Chicken

This yummy recipe only requires chicken, wing sauce, and a block of cream cheese. It’s versatile because you can make it in either a slow cooker or an electric pressure cooker (like an Instant Pot.) Either way, the results are a delicious topping for almost anything you’ve got on hand — rice, noodles, cooked vegetables, a salad, crackers, or tortilla chips are all good. RECIPE

Slow Cooker Peach Cobbler

Don’t forget about dessert. The only ingredients you need for this one are two cans of peaches, a stick of butter, and a box of cake mix. Yes, it’s a bit of a dump dessert, but a delicious one at that. Let your crockpot do the cooking for you while you tend to other, more important things. Bonus if you have vanilla ice cream in the freezer, as it will be the perfect accompaniment with this warm dessert. RECIPE

We hope that everyone is holding up well during this unique situation. Perhaps making some of these recipes will help you and your family to feel even better. We’re confident that we’ll pull through this challenge together and look forward to living a much more normal “HarborClubLife” soon.

Take Advantage of Record Low Mortgage Rates

low-mortgage-interest.jpg

While many economists predicted that mortgage rates were going to go up this time of year, they’ve actually dropped to record lows. According to Freddie Mac, 30-year fixed-rate mortgages are currently hovering around 3.5%, and 15-year mortgages are just shy of 3%. That makes borrowed money a very economical option for homebuyers right now — and the perfect time to buy a home.

Predictions by most housing economists say that mortgage rates will likely remain below 4% — at least for the time being. Of course, the low rates won’t last forever. So, if you’re toying with the idea of investing in the house of your dreams, here are two ways to make it happen sooner rather than later:

Sell your current home now

Selling your home now puts you in a better purchasing position when it comes time to buy your new place. According to Realtor.com, the inventory of homes for sale in the U.S. went down 14% in January. That’s the lowest level since 2012. With it being such a strong seller’s market, your current home is likely to sell fast. That’s especially true if you are working with a top-notch real estate agent. What’s more, once your existing home is sold, your offer on a new home will be more likely to get the seller’s attention. Why? Because, unlike most others, your offer won’t be contingent upon the sale of the house you’re living in now. This scenario puts you as a front-runner in bidding wars and will help give you first dibs on a home you love.

Buy a new house now

We know this sounds like a poor strategy, but it’s not. As mentioned above, we’re in a strong seller’s market, and your current home should sell quickly. Also, home prices are rising faster than mortgage rates are dropping — so if you happen to find your dream house now, go ahead and buy it. With buyer demand being so high and the housing supply being so low, the home you love could be less affordable in the near future. Buy now, then price your current home appropriately to get it sold right away. Another advantage of immediately purchasing a new house is that you won’t find yourself without a place to live. With home inventory being so low, selling your current home first (as mentioned in the first scenario) could potentially put you and your family in that unlucky position.

Don’t wait any longer. Now is the time to benefit from the record-low interest rates on mortgages. If not already, determine your ideal community, then take a look at its current home inventory. You never know, you may discover that your dream home is within easy reach.

While you’re at it, add Harbor Club to your list of potential places to live. As an award-winning, Southern Living-inspired, golf and lake community, you won’t want to miss out on our current real estate offerings. Here, we’ll not only introduce you to a fantastic new home but an exceptional, resort-like lifestyle. Contact us today to schedule your exclusive tour.

Tips for Sticking to Healthy Resolutions

pickleball___tennis.jpg

Are you struggling to stick to your New Year’s health and fitness resolutions? You’re not the only one. According to U.S. News & World Report, the failure rate for all New Year’s resolutions is around 80 percent. It doesn’t have to be that way, especially here at Harbor Club. Here are helpful tips on how to finally stick to your healthy resolutions once and for all.

Start with smaller goals

Instant gratification is the norm in today’s world. But when it comes to things like quickly dropping a lot of weight or becoming a marathon runner, they aren’t going to happen overnight. Try breaking down your bigger goals into smaller ones so that you can more easily achieve them. It’s slow, but steady progress and just as rewarding if you can practice a bit of patience.

Include a workout buddy

You don’t have to go it alone when trying to achieve your health and fitness goals. Include a workout buddy to help keep you both accountable. When you work out with friends, you’ll not only have someone to socialize with; you likely encourage each other to keep going and applaud the efforts made.

Make it fun

If you know you dislike running, don’t try to force yourself into doing it. Identify fitness activities that you enjoy and focus on those instead. Better yet, try intriguing new exercise regimens to see if any spark your interest. You never know until you try — and you may discover an exciting, new sport that you love. Gamifying your fitness goals, either via online apps or with your workout buddy, are other fun tactics. A small, friendly wager can inspire a lot of gleeful banter filled with good-natured jeers and cheers — both of which fuel encouragement too.

If you need some fitness ideas, here are a few to try:

Go for a walk or run

There are many options for enjoying a heart-pumping walk or run at Harbor Club. Try the quarter-mile track, the hiking trail, the Fit-Trail®, or hop on a state-of-the-art treadmill at The Grove. And with over 25-miles of well-maintained roads in our gated community, it’s easy to go for a quick walk or run in the neighborhood whenever it’s convenient for you.

Take a fitness class

We’ve got plenty of classes available at our Fitness Center — why not try one, or even a few? There are options for yoga, Zumba, Jazzercise, barre, core, and stretch. Bring along a friend for twice the fun. Men’s Golf Yoga Conditioning, for example, might be less intimidating if you bring your workout buddy. (Note: You’ll happily discover that this particular class isn’t threatening at all.)

Play golf

Our highly popular, award-winning, Weiskopf/Morrish-designed golf course is sure to delight anyone who loves to swing a club. Grab your workout buddy (or friends, family, colleagues, etc.) and up your fitness game by walking the course. Its varied terrain will provide an incredible workout while having a great time.

Play pickleball or tennis

With both tennis and several new pickleball courts, we have plenty of ways to help you get your racket swinging. Aside from playing either sport at your leisure, we offer scheduled clinics, group play, and tournaments. We have a great group of people who make it easy to match you up to others who play at your level, from novice to experienced.

If you’re ready to embrace a healthy, new lifestyle in 2020, you’ll find it’s easy to achieve at Harbor Club. We have everything you need to hit and maintain your fitness goals this year and beyond. Get started today!

Southern Living-Inspired Holiday Home Tours

SL-holiday.jpg

Ready to get in the holiday spirit? We can help. Maybe you’ve already heard about or even toured our newest Southern Living-Inspired model home. Either way, we don’t want you to miss out on what’s new. In the spirit of the season, we now have our model decorated beautifully for the holidays, and it’s a stunning sight to see.

Once you experience this home (and our Harbor Club neighborhood), you’ll understand our pride in being chosen as a Southern Living-Inspired Community. We genuinely enjoy upholding the philosophy of creating “environments that foster gatherings, interactions, and celebrations” — especially during the holidays. Our decorated Southern Living-Inspired model home is no exception. Here’s why:

The decor

Festive greenery is key. It’s prolific throughout the house. The universal centerpiece of the holidays is, of course, the Christmas tree. That pretty pine theme is everywhere, from the swag on the mantel to the wreaths on the doors, the staircase banisters, and more. Rustic touches, such as the use of buffalo plaid ornaments, weathered jingle bells, and gray knitted stockings add to the charming “farmhouse” feel. As you’ll see in our decorated model, the use of bold colors, mixed materials, seasonal flowers, and a mix of both traditional and modern accents were encouraged. It’s a merry sight to see.

The gatherings

Southern Living-Inspired Communities are ones that have fun-loving neighbors who enjoy celebrating together. No matter the occasion, Southern-style and hospitable charm flow at our gatherings. And speaking of flow, Southern Living-Inspired homes are perfectly set up for entertaining. As you’ll see in our model home, it’s easy for family and friends to congregate around the enormous kitchen island. Everyone always gathers in the kitchen, after all. We think it has something to do with…

…the food

Traditional or not, festive food is one of the best parts of a holiday celebration. Delicious feasts and thoughtful homemade goodies abound. Sharing meals with loved ones is a heartwarming way to show you care, especially when using family-favorite, time-honored recipes. Whether it be party-fare, a lovely dinner, fun cocktails, or creative cookies, the yummy food is always part of the nostalgic charm of the season.

So if you’re looking for something to do that inspires glad tidings to all, go on a festive tour of our newest Southern Living-Inspired model home. Seeing all the beautiful decorations with your family and friends is a heartwarming way to enjoy the spirit of the season. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Details: Public tours are on Saturdays from 11 AM – 4 PM and Sundays from 1 PM – 4 PM. To arrange an appointment for an exclusive private showing, please call 706-453-7855.

Untitled-design-1.jpg

The “lake country” of Georgia is a fantastic place to raise a family. There are plenty of reasons — especially if you’re thinking about living here at Harbor Club. If you have kids, you owe it to yourself to consider these six reasons why Harbor Club is a perfect place for families to call home.

Harbor Club is an honest-to-goodness neighborhood

Harbor Club has over 80% full-time residents, whereas other communities in the lake country have as few as 20% full-time residents. Here, we have a close-knit neighborhood full of fun-loving residents. Kids can go outside and play together, just like we used to do when we were kids. That warm, comforting, family feel is one of the many reasons we were chosen as aSouthern Living-Inspired Community.

Gorgeous homes built for real life

Patriot Builders is known for its quality-built homes. Residences at Harbor Club are more than showplaces. They are homes where families can live life to the fullest. Each one includes large kitchens, thoughtfully designed laundry rooms and mudrooms, multiple spaces to play and be entertained, and lots of storage throughout. With so many appealing designs and styles, it’s easy for families to find a luxurious, yet highly-functional home here that fits their needs perfectly.

Multiple excellent educational opportunities abound

We’re fortunate to have severalexcellent schools in our area. Nearby Lake Oconee Academy is known for being a National Blue Ribbon School and one of the Top 50 Public Elementary Schools in the Nation. Also, the University of Georgia (which is one of the oldest, most notable public universities in the nation) is located a short drive away in Athens.

Several community amenities that appeal to ALL family members

No matter your hobby, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Harbor Club. All of our residents have easy access to Lake Oconee via the Boathouse Marina. Plenty of ‘lake life’ opportunities abound, including boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing, just to name a few. Of course, there is award-winning golf atour Weiskopf/Morrish-designed course. We also have a quarter-mile track, dog park, hiking trails, a community garden, junior Olympic-sized pool, pickleball and tennis courts, a well-appointed gym, fitness center, and lots of fun exercise classes like Zumba and yoga. With all that activity, you’ll likely work up an appetite. Our Clubhouse and Boathouse Restaurants have you covered with delicious meals that appeal to a wide variety of tastes. What’s more, all of our residents rest easy knowing that Harbor Club is secure with 24/7 gate access.

A social calendar full of family-friendly events and activities

Whether you are a grandparent, parent, or kid, there are lots of fun events and activities to enjoy at Harbor Club. Besides the amenities mentioned already, we offer family night dinners, golf tournaments, junior golf camp, magic and comedy shows, trivia nights, dances, pool parties, music game show nights, game groups, themed meals (like Italian night), junior golf camp, and Sunday brunch, just to name a few. Holidays are memorable as well, with events such as Breakfast with Santa, a Fourth of July golf cart parade, Halloween Trunk-or-Treat and costume party, Mother’s Day Brunch, an outdoor Easter egg hunt, and more.

Easy access to stores, banks, restaurants, healthcare, and recreation

Whether you have to quickly go out to pick up diapers, get some cash, or refill a prescription, there are severalgrocery stores, banks, and pharmacies nearby. If your baby has the sniffles, there are multiple excellent doctors and healthcare facilities nearby too, including an award-winning hospital just down the street from our entrance. If you want to have an impromptu date night, it’s a cinch to go out and indulge in a nice dinner and a movie, especially since you don’t have to deal with long lines and traffic.

Gardening: Like Going to the Gym but Better

garden.jpg

Our good friends at Southern Living magazine recently published an article titled, “A New Study Says Gardening Is Just as Good As Going to the Gym.” As attention-grabbing as that is, we think it’s possible that gardening could be even better than a gym workout. How? As much as we love our gym workouts, there are several unique health benefits that gardening offers.

Boosts your vitamin D

When you’re outside in the sun, your exposed skin naturally produces Vitamin D. To absorb calcium properly, your body must have that vital nutrient. What happens if you’re not absorbing enough calcium? Your body grabs it from somewhere else — typically the stores in your skeleton, which can result in weakened bones. As we age, we want to avoid that as much as possible. Getting enough Vitamin D and calcium absorption will help you resist fractures, osteoporosis, and other detrimental bone health issues.

Receive a hormone high

Studies have shown that inhaling the bacteria “M. vaccae” can both reduce anxiety while increasing levels of the happy hormone, serotonin. Where can you find this “M. vaccae”? Believe it or not, it’s in dirt. It’s a healthy bacteria that love to live in the soil. Now you have all the more reason to dig your hands into the earth happily knowing that “dirt don’t hurt.”

Heal faster

If you’re in the process of healing, either physically, emotionally, or both, the simple act of being outside in a natural environment (like a pretty garden) can help you recover. An article from Scientific American mentions two groups of patients recovering from surgery: one who could look out their hospital windows at leafy, green trees, while the other had only a brick wall. Not surprisingly, the group with the natural, tree-lined view healed much more quickly, required less pain medication, and had fewer complications during their healing process.

Influences healthy eating

When you grow your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables, you gain more than just delicious produce. The whole process creates a desire to indulge in and eat the bounty you worked so hard to cultivate. You already know that there is nothing like the taste of a warm, juicy, homegrown tomato picked at the peak of ripeness. Having ready access to that kind of fresh, delicious food will inspire you to enjoy more of it …and share it too (especially when it comes to a bountiful zucchini harvest.)

So whether you want to do some healthy gardening or prefer to do a heart-pumping gym workout, we’ve got you covered either way. Simply head to The Grove where you’ll find both our Victory Garden and our Fitness Center. The Grove campus is just one of the many amenities we enjoy at Harbor Club. We’d be happy to show it to you and so much more. Contact us today for a personalized tour.

Enjoy Winter at Harbor Club

DSC_133_20190114-145513_1.JPG

If you’ve been following some of the latest winter holiday trends, you know that the Danish tradition of hygge is a popular one right now. It’s where you make your home a super-cozy, warm, and comfy nest. The Danes created this movement as an effective coping mechanism for surviving the extreme boredom, cold, and dark of their long winters. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with being hunkered down in the safety and comfort of your toasty home, but lucky for us at Harbor Club, there is no need. Our location in Georgia affords us wonderfully mild winters — so we can head out whenever we wish during the colder months of the year.

We have so many fun things to do here. Go ahead and get out of the house and enjoy some of these activities this winter.

Let us entertain you

In addition to our annual holiday parties, events, and golf tournaments, we have lively trivia and music game show nights, which are a great way to gather with friends. If you don’t feel like cooking, the Clubhouse Restaurant can whip up something delicious for you in no time. Plan to bring your sweetie to our exquisite Valentine’s Day Dinner. It’s sure to make your hearts swoon over the food …and each other.

Get fresh air and exercise outside

Even in the winter, we have fantastic weather in Georgia. What’s more, we have tons of options for getting a bit of exercise outside. If court sports are your thing, we have pickleball and tennis available. Love golf? Our award-winning, Weiskopf-Morrish-designed course is incredible to play — even in the winter. If you’re into running, jogging, or walking, we have a quarter-mile track at The Grove as well as several miles of well-maintained roads in our 24/7-secure community. If you’re into more laid-back exercise options, you can always play a game of croquet at the Clubhouse lawn or head to the dock at The Boathouse to drop a line in Lake Oconee. We’ve got several stocked ponds throughout the community where the fish are biting too.

Escape the elements and exercise inside

On the rare occasion that the weather isn’t so great, you can still get a great workout. Just head to the Fitness Center at The Grove. We’ve got plenty of fun, heart-pumping classes to take advantage of, such as Barre, Jazzercise, yoga, and more. Even if you aren’t into exercise classes, you can easily hop on one of our top-notch cardio machines or utilize the strength-training equipment to help you hit your New Year’s resolutions.

Be a tourist in your town

Lucky for us, our local area has plenty of fun things to do. Downtown Greensboro is a great place to walk and shop in the boutiques and antique stores. Try the famous buttermilk pie at Yesterday cafe. Head to the library to check out some new books, magazines, or DVDs. Pop into some of the art galleries or museums, like Uncle Remus or The Old Gaol. Historic Madison is nearby, which boasts several stunning antebellum homes, several of which offer fascinating tours.

Do a winter photoshoot

Even in the winter, Harbor Club is a beautiful place to live. Grab your camera (ok, your smartphone) and head outside to take some photos. A few iconic spots are our fountain, the Lighthouse Pavilion, the golf course, the Stables, the pretty ponds, and of course, Lake Oconee. We love seeing your photos! When you post them on Facebook and Instagram, please be sure to tag Harbor Club. We enjoy sharing your images with our thousands of followers (with your permission, of course.)

Ready to get out of the house, meet new people, and be active this winter? Even if you don’t reside here, you can obtain exclusive access to our high-end facilities and fun activities as a member of Harbor Club. Learn more about becoming a member today.

Happy Holidays from Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

holiday.jpg

As this year draws to a close, we are reflecting on all our wonderful blessings and accomplishments in 2018. What a year it has been! We have so much to be thankful for here at Harbor Club — most especially for our fantastic residents and members. We are proud that our Southern Living-Inspired Community continues to be a tremendous place to live, work, and play. These are some of the highlights from this past year that make for happy holidays indeed.

Won Best Georgia Community of the Year Award

Our distinctive community has won yet another noteworthy accolade in 2018 — one that adds to our ever-growing list of awards. You may recall that last year, Real Estate Scorecard, the industry leader of online real estate reviews, announced that Harbor Club won the “Best Lake Community of the Year” award. This year, we’ve improved upon that by winning the “Best Georgia Community of the Year” award.

Featured on Golf America TV

We had the pleasure of being highlighted on Golf America TV this past summer. It was an expertly produced television program that showcased our award-winning Weiskopf-Morrish-designed golf course. It also included helpful golf tips from our head golf pro, Doug Price, and a tour of our Southern Living-Inspired model home by our friendly Sales Director, Kathy Phillips. If you missed it, you can watch the video clips or watch the whole show on our Facebook page.

Appointed Adam Smith at The Boathouse Restaurant

Known far and wide for his delicious fare, we hired Adam Smith this past spring to take the helm at The Boathouse Restaurant. When we announced this on Facebook, we had 140 positive reactions! It garnered many happy comments such as this one from Leigh Lofgren, “Just thrilled we have Adam – he is a fabulous chef and his fish tacos, spicy beans, hummus are simply wonderful. Congrats to HC and Adam, love that you are there.” Learn more about Adam and his impressive culinary background from our interview with him.

Added enhancements to the golf course

In our efforts to make our award-winning golf course even better, we added some fairly significant improvements to it this year. We always want to make our patrons golf experience the absolute best it can be. Learn more about the investments and improvements we made.

Complemented The Grove with new pickleball courts

After we installed a few pickleball courts at our Swim and Tennis Center a few years ago, the sport grew in such popularity that we decided to add some more — this time to The Grove campus. The six brand new courts, along with storage lockers and restrooms, are a perfect addition to The Grove facility.

Our Southern Living

-Inspired model home – now privately owned

Yes, our gorgeous, Southern Living-Inspired model home was purchased by a lucky family this year. Don’t worry — Patriot Builder’s is busy building additional Southern Living homes right now. If you missed out on viewing the model we built last year though, you can still take a photo tour of it. Better yet, see photos of it in all it’s festive, holiday glory.

What an amazing year we’ve had! From our family to yours, we hope that 2019 is just as fantastic. Best wishes and happy holidays to all.

PS – Stop by soon to see and learn about all the great things we have going on in our Southern Living-Inspired Community this year into next. You’ll be glad you did.

Holiday Trends 2018

holiday-trends.png

Wondering what’s cool and new for this holiday season? We’ve explored some of the latest trends for 2018 and found a few that may surprise you.

Hygge home decor

Pronounced “HOO-ga,” hygge is a Danish word that has no English translation. It’s best described as a warm and ultra-comfy lifestyle. It’s all about relaxation and togetherness with family and friends. To get your home in the spirit of hygge, think warm tones and fluffy throws, plush cushions, steaming drinks, tea-lights, copper kitchenware, candles, and weighted blankets. The whole idea is to make your home feel like a beautiful, cozy nest — much like our Southern Living-Inspired homes.

Cozy clothing

In keeping with the hygge trend, comfortable clothing is just as popular. Sherpa is huge right now. You’ll find it on everything from socks to sweatshirts. Popcorn cardigans are very trendy as well, as are cozy knits, faux fur coats and linings, and all sorts of cute pajamas for the family.

Wellness everything

Health and wellness are enormously in vogue these days …but it’s not just about workouts. It’s more about self-care, healing, detoxification, and relaxation. Currently, the most sought-after items are essential oils, shower melts, Himalayan salt lamps, meditation aids, dry brushes, daily journals, hydration jugs, soothing botanicals (like lavender, chamomile, and lemon balm,) and even aromatic play dough.

Regional comfort food

Comfort foods carry a certain nostalgia and emotion that people adore. While the food trend last year was more ethnic in nature (like poke, Korean barbeque, ramens, and curries) this year’s food trends are more regionalized, such as regional barbeque flavors, stews, fried chicken, meatloaf, and hush puppies.

Anything with buffalo plaid

It’s not just for lumberjacks anymore. Buffalo check plaid prints have made a big comeback. You’ll find it on napkins, holiday cards, table runners, stockings, wreaths, throw pillows, gift tags, pajamas, ornaments, and clothing — from socks to sweatshirts.

Zero-waste gift wrapping

Many people are steering clear of “single-use” anything to lead more sustainable lives. Instead of using single-use gift wrap this year, try swapping it out with things like scrap fabric, paper grocery bags, newspaper, and old maps. Consider making the wrap itself part of the gift by using a vintage scarf, pretty dishcloth, or a cotton produce sack. Then, instead of using tape, tie gifts with twine, leather cord, wire, or scrap fabric. Then embellish with vintage jewelry, real plants (such as a small succulent or air plant,) cinnamon sticks, or fresh herbs like a sprig of rosemary.

Experience gifts

Have you noticed? The most thoughtful gifts are becoming less tangible and more experiential. Sure, there’s a certain high that comes from unwrapping the latest, coolest thing — but that feeling is fleeting. Experience gifts, on the other hand, are ones that create memories that last a lifetime. If you’re struggling with what to get for someone, take a look at our list of fun experience gift ideas. Any are sure to wow your recipient and make you a gift-giving hero.

Are there other trends you would add to this list? Follow us on Facebook and let us know.

Lake Oconee Wedding Venues: Book Yours at Harbor Club

lake-oconee-weddings.jpeg

With the warm weather we’ve been having, it feels like spring has already sprung. Love is certainly in the air, especially since we just celebrated Valentine’s Day too. And with so many sweethearts who were lucky enough to get engaged recently, several are likely wondering where they should celebrate their big day. If Lake Oconee wedding venues are on the list of options, here’s why Harbor Club can be the perfect place.

Great location

Not only are we located right on the shimmering shores of beautiful Lake Oconee (Georgia’s second largest lake,) we are a straight, 1.5-hour drive east of Atlanta. Widely known as the country’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is one that your guests can easily access, no matter what part of the world they are traveling from. And hey – if the charming location of Greensboro, Georgia was good enough for Carrie Underwood to have her wedding, you’ll probably think it’s good enough for yours too!

Multiple venues to choose from

Whether you wish to have your wedding indoors or outside, rustic or formal, or perhaps a combination of all these characteristics, Harbor Club has a venue for you. The Stables and our outdoor chapel are a fantastic spot for a barn-type wedding. The Boathouse is a lovely spot for a lake wedding. The Clubhouse offers the perfect place for a more formal affair overlooking the 18th green of our award-winning golf course. And no matter the venue you choose, Harbor Club is also the ideal place for your fun pre-wedding or “day of” activities.

On-site catering available

Whether you wish for cozy, comfort food or prefer much more elegant fare, our highly-trained culinary team can create delectable cuisine for all occasions. There’s no need to worry about hiring or handling the logistics for an outside catering company (although outside catering is certainly welcome.) Our staff is already on-site and well-prepared for making your celebratory spread a delicious and memorable part of your big day.

Now that the springtime flowers are already blooming, we’re seeing plenty of indicators that wedding season is getting into full swing. If you’re researching Lake Oconee wedding venues, be sure to check out Harbor Club. Plan your visit today, because time is running out. This is especially true if you only have certain days available for your wedding, as we recommend booking at Harbor Club as far in advance as possible. Give us a call today.

Fall in Love with Your Home Again

love.jpg

Remember how you felt when you moved into your home? Just like with any new relationship, it was likely exciting, a little bit unsettling, and undoubtedly fun. But also like any long-standing relationship, that thrilling “spark” you experienced at the beginning can wane over time. Have no fear! There are some easy ways to rekindle the romance you once had for your home. All it takes is a little bit of creative effort. Here are a few ideas for revitalizing your space and regaining that lovin’ feeling in your home again:

Paint a wall

One of the fastest, most inexpensive, yet dramatic ways to refresh a space is to give it a new coat of paint. You could easily and quickly paint one accent wall to give a room a whole new feel. Choose your favorite color or perhaps go with something bolder, like Pantone’s 2018 color of the year, Ultra Violet. “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” That’s certainly not a stale way of thinking!

Get organized

get organized

Clutter is something that can certainly zap the energy from an otherwise lovely space. Go to what was your favorite room and take stock of everything in it. This includes everything you don’t see too, such as the stuff in your closets, cabinets, and drawers. How much of it have you used in the last year? Be realistic about what you truly need and what you can do without. If there are things you own that don’t spark joy anymore, let them go. Once you’ve gotten rid of all your useless items and re-organized what’s left, you’ll be happily surprised with how much you love the space again.

Move furniture

If you’ve had the same old pieces in the same old places, it’s time to change it up. Think creatively as to where your furniture may be better utilized or highlighted in different rooms of your house. Keep taller and more substantial pieces around the perimeter of your rooms and consider adding accent pieces that make sense. For example, a nice ottoman in front of a sitting chair can make it appear and feel cozier.

Change artwork

How many years have the same paintings and photos been hanging in the same places on your walls? If you’ve grown weary of seeing the same things over and over again, it’s time to change up your artwork to things you find more inspiring. If you have particular photos or art pieces that you’ve wanted to get framed “someday,” take the time to do it now. You can easily get them done online (Framebridge is a good option.)

Now, even after all your efforts, you still find that you’re not falling back in love with your home — consider the fact that it may be time to (literally) move on. Southern Living Community: Get Holiday Inspired With a Festive Model Home Tour

harbor-club-decorated.jpg

So you may have already heard about, and perhaps have even already toured, our new Southern Living inspired model home. Either way, we don’t want you to miss out on what’s new. In the spirit of the season, we now have our model decked out beautifully for the holidays, and it’s a stunning sight to see!

Once you experience it, and the entire Harbor Club neighborhood for that matter, you’ll understand our pride in being chosen as a Southern Living inspired community. We genuinely enjoy upholding the philosophy of creating “environments that foster gatherings, interactions, and celebrations” — especially during the holidays. Our decorated Southern Living inspired model home is no exception.

Here’s why:

The decor

The universal centerpiece of the holidays is, of course, the Christmas tree. Is there such a thing as going overboard on decorating such an iconic piece? We don’t think so. Afterall, it has to match the swag on the mantel, the wreaths on the doors, the pretty centerpieces, and the rest of the festive trimmings throughout the house. As you’ll see in our model, use of bold colors, mixed materials, seasonal flowers, and a mix of both traditional and modern accents were encouraged. All will undoubtedly make you feel merry and bright.

The gatherings

Southern Living communities are ones that have fun-loving neighbors who enjoy celebrating together. No matter the occasion, Southern style and hospitable charm flow. And speaking of flow, Southern Living inspired homes are perfectly set up for entertaining. As you’ll see in our model home, it’s easy to gather your family and friends around a big kitchen island. Afterall, everyone always seems to congregate in the kitchen. We think it’s got something to do with…

The food

Traditional or not, festive food is one of the best parts of the holidays. Delicious feasts and thoughtful homemade goodies abound. Sharing meals with loved ones is a heartwarming way to show you care, especially when using family-favorite, time-honored recipes. Whether it be party-fare, a lovely dinner, fun cocktails, or creative cookies, the fabulous food is always part of the charm of the season.

The giving

Gift giving is as synonymous with the holidays as good old, jolly St. Nicholas. However, everyone knows that it’s more about the giving than receiving. In that regard, tours of our newest Southern Living inspired model home are free of charge. However, a $10 donation is suggested. Those donations will fully benefit the Greensboro-based Circle of Love Center — an organization that provides support services to domestic violence victims and their children in Greene, Morgan, Putnam, Baldwin, and Hancock counties.

So if you’re looking for something to do that inspires glad tidings to all, enjoy a tour of our Southern Living inspired model home. Seeing the beautiful decorations and knowing your donations are going toward a good cause will warm everyone’s hearts for the holidays.

Madison in May Tour of Homes: What to See and Do

porch-186402_1280.jpg

If you are headed to the Madison in May Tour of Homes, consider yourself very lucky, indeed. Madison, Georgia is a gorgeous Southern town steeped in fascinating history and grand architecture. In fact, it Southern Living Magazine recently awarded it as one of The South’s Best Small Towns. Also, the Historic District of Madison is one of the largest in the state of Georgia, and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Why all the fuss? Because of the stunning antebellum homes! There are nearly 100 of them that have been carefully restored to the original grandeur. They are a sight to behold — almost like a gateway for stepping back in time. The Madison in May Tour of Homes gives you the opportunity to do just that. On the tour you get to see several of these special places, both inside and out. So don’t miss out! Here’s why you want to go:

To see the homes (of course!)

There are several fantastic homes to see on the tour. All of these are open on Friday and Saturday, except the Joshua Hill House, which is only open on Friday.

  • Joshua Hill House (ca. 1840s) 485 Old Post Road.
  • Paulett-Hanson House (ca.1843) 382 Porter St.
  • Vason-Bell-Orr House (ca.1896; reconstructed ca. 1812) 555 South Main Street Broughton Hall (ca. 1850) 411 Old Post Road
  • Stovall-Vaughan House (ca. 1915) 372 West Central Ave.
  • Mad House (ca. 1910) 358 Johnson St.
  • Ice House Condominiums (building ca. 1910s; condos 2004). 271 West Washington St.

To see the landmarks

There’s more to see than just antebellum homes in historic Madison. The following landmarks will also be open to the public, for free, during the Madison in May Tour of Homes:

  • Calvary Baptist Church (ca. 1880) 184 Academy Street

  • Episcopal Church of the Advent (1844) 338 Academy Street

  • First United Methodist Church (1914) 296 South Main Street

  • Madison Baptist Church (ca.1855) 328 South Main Street

  • Heritage Hall (ca.1811) 277 S. Main St.

  • Rose Cottage (ca.1800) 179 E. Jefferson St.

  • Rogers House (ca. 1800) 179 E. Jefferson St.

  • Richter Cottage 5231 Seven Islands Rd.

  • The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center 434 S Main St. Note: This is the main sponsor of the tour of homes, and it is located in an elegantly restored 1895 Romanesque Revival building in the heart of Madison, Georgia’s historic district.

To see Lake Oconee

Unfortunately, Lake Oconee is not located directly in Madison, but it’s very close — only a short 20 to 30-minute drive away. Georgia’s second largest lake is gorgeous to see in the springtime. In fact, our community has nine miles of shoreline on it’s calm, blue waters. Why not stop by so we can show you around? You can see the lake, relax and rejuvenate while enjoying a nice meal. Then we can give you a personal tour of our own beautiful homes! You’ll get a taste of real Southern hospitality here… and you get to experience what we’re proud to call the “Harbor Club Life.”

So double your fun this May — enjoy touring the fabulous homes in Madison, and take the opportunity to come see us too. Call today so we can make special arrangements for your visit!

From Our Harbor Club Family to Yours, Happy Holidays!

holiday-wishes.jpg

It’s amazing how time flies, isn’t it? Already another year is nearing completion, and what a year it has been! As we look forward to the new year, we are so proud of what we were able to accomplish for our beloved Harbor Club residents and members in 2016. Just think of all we were able to achieve! Not only did we give our website a complete refresh, we were able to succeed in the following:

Gained new accolades

Our fantastic Weiskopf-Morrish designed golf course attained several additional commendations, including ranking fourth on Golf.com’s list of Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia. Harbor Club golf course also jumped to third on Golfweek’s “Best Courses” List as well as achieve placement on their Best Residential Courses 2017 listing.

Brought in new team members

Not only did we bring our fantastic new chef, David Butler, we also hired the amazing Kathy Phillips as director of our real estate division. The results? David revamped our menus and he and his team have created some delicious meals for us all to savor and enjoy. Kathy has done an amazing job of introducing clients to Harbor Club and delighting new property owners with unprecedented new, resale and home site opportunities at our golf and lake community.

Opened a new design studio

We made building a dream home exciting and fun with the help of our new design studio. From selecting real estate, to home plans and interior design details, new Harbor Club homeowners delight in the entire process. Our knowledgeable team can share ideas and show options for every step in a comfortable environment that very few other communities can replicate.

Created new Cottage Series homes

Harbor Club’s brand new Cottage Series homes are an exciting addition to our neighborhood. These craftsman style homes feature easy-living with open floor plans, master suites on the main floor and no-maintenance landscaping. Even better, all homes in Harbor Club enjoy full access to Lake Oconee through Harbor Club’s Boathouse Marina amenity.

Built new pickleball courts

This past summer we installed three brand new pickleball courts at Harbor Club. This fast-growing sport has been a hit in our community, as it is a great way to have fun and get fit with friends.

Opened The Grove – A new fitness / recreation / special event campus

In an effort to continuously improve and create additional amenities at Harbor Club, we recently unveiled The Grove. It includes a new fitness facility, quarter-mile track, sports field, dog parks, victory community garden, sanctuary pond, fitness trails and more! It’s been a great asset for living what we call “The Harbor Club Life”.

What an epic year! From our family to yours, we hope that 2017 is just as fantastic. Best wishes and happy holidays to all.

Dog Park Etiquette Tips to Help You Avoid a Faux Pas

Dog_Park.jpeg

Like us humans, dogs are born to lead active lives. They love to go outside to play just as much as we do. Fortunately for those that live at Harbor Club, both residents and their canine “kids” have a brand new dog park to do just that.

At our brand new amenity center, The Grove, you’ll find our recently unveiled dog park. The park is actually made up of two fenced-in sections—one designated for large breeds and the other for smaller pups. It’s a fantastic place for both the dogs and their owners to socialize, get to know one another and make new friends.

dog park

To get the most out of your dog park experience, however, it’s important to be considerate of others. Here are some great etiquette tips to help you (and Fido) avoid any potential improprieties:

  • No matter what, always pick up after your dog. It’s just good manners and will keep the park clean and tidy so everyone can enjoy it.
  • Think twice about bringing your pooch to the dog park if he or she:
    • is sick
    • has not been properly vaccinated
    • is under 12 weeks of age
    • is female dog in heat
    • has aggressive tendencies or is very anxious around other dogs
  • Keep small dogs in the small breed pen and large breeds in the large breed pen.
  • As fun as it is to chat with other people at the dog park, don’t let that stop you from supervising your pet.
  • The same goes for using smartphones. Avoid staring at the screen more than you are watching your dog.
  • If there are kids at the dog park, pay particular attention to them and their interaction with the dogs. Be vigilant to make sure everyone gets along nicely with one another.
  • Avoid bringing any other items into the park, other than your dog. Even if it is just a lawn chair or a backpack, it will likely get chewed up or urinated on quicker than you can say “No!”
  • Refrain from giving human food and treats to any dogs at the park. Some may be on special diets or have allergic reactions to certain ingredients.
  • If your dog doesn’t want to play at the dog park, don’t force the situation. It’s supposed to be fun! Leave and try again another day. Over time, the park and its attendees will become more familiar, which can make it a more comfortable place for your dog to play.

We are so excited to have this new dog park at Harbor Club, and we know the community is, too! If you’re at the park with your pup, we’d love it if you’d snap a photo and share it with us on our Facebook Page!

Give the Gift of Experiences This Year

gift-of-experiences-blog.jpg

If you’re struggling to come up with the perfect presents for your family and friends, you are not alone. Every year, it seems to get more challenging to find a unique gift — especially for those that already seem to have everything they could ever want or need. As the big day draws near, have no fear, you can easily overcome this struggle by giving the gift of an experience instead of more stuff.

An experience gift is not something tangible. According to Psychological Science Journal, researchers found that “…experiential purchases (money spent on doing) tend to provide more enduring happiness than material purchases (money spent on having).” An experience is a gift that creates memories that can last a lifetime. Typical material presents are often stored away, used up or forgotten over time. But an experience gift is so different. The memories of it actually can grow fonder as the years go by.

So what are some great experience gifts? Here are some ideas:

Spa Day

Who doesn’t love to be pampered? A spa day is the perfect give for that person on your list who needs a little rest and relaxation. And it’s just as good for a man as it is for a woman. A spa day is a wonderful luxury that your gift recipients will never forget, especially since it is something that they would rarely indulge in on their own. Look for local spas and see what packages they offer, or ask to build your own.

Fun Classes

Educational classes don’t have to be boring. There are tons of great classes that you can give as a gift. Think about what your friends and family love to do. There are classes available for all sorts of things, such as gourmet cooking, racecar driving, mountain climbing, arts and crafts… you name it. You can often find great deals on fun classes through Groupon.

Event Tickets

Giving tickets to an amazing show, play, concert, museum or game are an awesome, unique gift. You can even throw in a professional chauffeur and a meal to make it a more personalized package deal. And if you are really lucky, maybe the recipient will invite you to go along with them!

Memberships

A membership that provides constant access to a person’s favorite activities is a wonderful gift. It allows the recipient to enjoy the gift at their leisure at any time of the year. You could give a park pass, a museum membership, or better yet, a Harbor Club golf membership. The latter would not only offer golf privileges, but access to all the great features at The Grove as well as fun social events. It’s multiple gifts in one, and it keeps on giving the whole year through.

So ditch the material stuff and go with an experience gift. You’ll be a gift-giving hero and greatly admired for your creativity as well as your generosity. What a relief during this stressful time of year!

From our family to yours, we wish the happiest of holidays.

Four Easy DIY Fall Decorating Ideas

fall-decor-Harbor-Club.jpg

When it comes to DIY home decor ideas, Pinterest is the place to go. There are so many beautiful ideas that you can easily lose track of time as you scroll through all the stunning photos. To save you some time this season, we’ve gone through and picked out four of our fall favorites — all of which tie in nicely with living the Harbor Club life.

Take a look:

Pinterest Pin: A football vase

Recommended for: Anyone who adores football (Harbor Club has a lot of fans!)

Idea credit: Unknown

We can’t seem to find the original owner of this fabulous idea, but it’s an easy one to recreate. Simply get an old football (thrift stores have them if you can’t find one at home), cut off a few inches from the ends and tuck your vase inside. Add a few sprigs of pretty fall foliage or flowers in the color palette of your favorite team, and you’ve got yourself an awesome conversation piece.

Pinterest Pin: Eye-catching fall decorations for a pretty dock (or door)

Recommended for: Those who have a dock (or front entry) that needs a bit of easy, fall decor.

Idea credit: Southern Living magazine

For those that are lucky enough to have a dock, why not accentuate it with some simple fall-themed items? All you need for your dock (or front door) is a few colorful mums, pumpkins and gourds of varying shapes and sizes and a autumn-leaf wreath. Not only does this assortment look great, it’s easy on the wallet too.

Pinterest Pin: Golf ball jack-o-lanterns

Recommended for: Anyone who loves golf or has a golf theme in their home.

Idea credit: Craft Klatch

This is such a cute idea! What’s better, it’s a great one to do with the kids. The simple instructions are on the Craft Klatch web link above. Once you’ve completed your adorable golf ball pumpkins, hang them around the house or wire several to a fall wreath to make it unique.

Pinterest Pin: Pumpkin and antler centerpiece in white

Recommended for: Those who desire a contemporary twist on a fall hunting theme.

Idea credit: Tone on Tone Swedish Antiques & More

This one will appeal to all deer lovers (hunters or not), as we know there are many at Harbor Club. This is a fairly simple pin to recreate. Combine white antlers with painted white pumpkins and a few expertly placed white flowers and stout candles and voila! You’ve got a unique, stunning fall centerpiece for your table.

Harbor Club on Lake Oconee is such a beautiful place to visit in the fall. Feel free to stop by soon and discover it for yourself!

P.S. If you’re looking for more creative ways to decorate your home, inside and out, this fall, take a look through our newest Pinterest board — and feel free to pin some of our ideas!

Retiring Soon? 7 Relocation Factors to Consider

retirement-social.jpg

You’ve worked hard and you’ve finally achieved the goal of retirement. Good for you! At this point, you may be considering moving someplace that is a better fit for your new lifestyle. A place where you can have a home that is the right size for you. A home where you can age in place. As scary as it may seem, moving from your old home doesn’t mean you have to give up all the things you hold dear. In fact, you may discover that moving was the best thing you ever did. So when researching new places, keep in mind the following:

Activities

Take a look at the recreational programs. Are they a good fit for your lifestyle? Ideally you would want to be someplace that offers a wide variety of activities, from physical (golf, Zumba, tennis, dances, swimming, etc.) to more relaxing (book club, social gatherings, bridge, educational seminars, etc.) That way, you have several options to stay engaged and enjoy life with a varied set of like-minded people.

Neighbors

Note the demographic of the neighborhood. Are they mostly young, old, or mix of the two? It’s important to find out, as you don’t want to be one the only 50 year-old in a community full of those in their 80s. Also, if a resort-like community is appealing, determine if the homeowners are mostly full-time or part-time residents. It’s much easier to make new friends if your neighbors are actually present.

Location

Choose a location that fits well with your goals. For example, if you wish to travel, ensure that you are close to a major airport. If you want to have access to sporting, musical and other cultural opportunities, look for places that are in close proximity to a large city or college towns. Consider geography as well. Do you prefer to live on flat land, rolling hills or mountainous terrain? This will make a difference when you want to go for a bike ride or a stroll. And if you happen to take a tumble, then how close is the nearest hospital? Fast access to excellent health care should be an important factor in your search.

Weather

There are those that love hot weather and those that prefer colder climates. As we age, we are more prone to a chill, so warmer regions may be ideal. In addition, a warmer place will have a lower propensity for snow and ice, making it easier for you to get around. Better yet, no snow means no shoveling!

Family-friendly

Will your extended family feel welcome in your new neighborhood? If visits from your kids and grandkids are important, live in a place that they would love just as much as you do. Check the amenities for things like playgrounds, bonfire pits, bocce ball, a pool and more. Also take a look at the social calendars to see if they include kid-friendly events and other activities that you and your whole family can enjoy together.

Standard of living

You’ve saved a bunch of money for retirement, which is fantastic. But now that you are on a fixed income, you’ll want to stretch those dollars. Places that have a high-cost of living will quickly blow your budget, so look for a place that offers your ideal living conditions at a lower price point. Go for a state that is tax-friendly to retirees. To compare — as amazing as California is, Georgia is better at providing the most bang for your buck.

Visit

Are the places you love online just as dreamy in real life? There’s only one way to find out. Take the time to visit each of the communities you have on your short list. Spend a day or two there to really comprehend what life would be like. Most places offer a “Discovery”-type package that provides that opportunity.

Now that you’re retiring, reward yourself with a new place that lets you enjoy life more, not less! Use your newfound time to capitalize on your good health, expand your horizons and explore new interests, all while maintaining your independence. You’ll be glad you did.
